5 More New York City Parks Will Get Free Wireless Internet This Week

Earlier this year the city announced a five-year plan with AT&T to bring free Wi-Fi to 26 spots in 20 New York City parks throughout the boroughs. This Thursday, Astoria Park in Queens, Herbert Von King Park and McCarren Park Field House in Brooklyn, Tompkins Square Park in Manhattan, and Clove Lakes Park in Staten Island will all join the list as Internet accessible.

According to the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation website, "New Yorkers will be able to stay connected with their smartphones, tablets, and other Wi-Fi enabled devices as they enjoy everything City parks, big and small, have to offer. AT&T Wi-Fi at City parks is free for all users."

We're wondering about what this means for Internet access, say, on the borders of the park -- any Tompkins Square adjacent folks want to let us know?

Future Wi-Fi locations will include Bronx River Park and Devoe Park in the Bronx; Brooklyn Bridge Park, Fort Greene Park, and Prospect Park in Brooklyn; multiple locations in Central Park, plus the High Line, Holcombe Rucker Park, and Marcus Garvey Park in Manhattan; Flushing Meadows Corona Park and MacDonald Park in Queens; and South Beach in Staten Island.

Connection is pretty easy:

To connect to the internet through one of the free AT&T Wi-Fi access points in parks, simply look for and select the network name "attwifi" in the list of networks in your device's Wi-Fi settings screen. That's it - no username or password is required.

One small step for man, one giant step toward ultimate Internet domination. But, really. We like this.
