Early Sunday morning, Occupy Maine protesters were attacked by an unknown assailant who threw a chemical bomb at their encampment. The Portland Press Herald reports that no one was hurt by the bomb, "which consisted of chemicals poured into a plastic Gatorade container." The assailant drove by Lincoln Park and hurled the device "into the camp's kitchen, a tarped area where food is cooked and served."

Occupy Maine released the following statement, which includes a description of the suspect's car:

Early Sunday morning, around 4am, the members of the Occupy Maine camp at Lincoln Park woke up to a loud explosion. Witnesses who were awake said a car driving by slowed down, and lobbed an IED over the fence. Within a few seconds, it exploded. The blast reportedly lifted a table about a foot off the ground. The table generally requires 2 people to lift and move. The target was the center of camp where the overnight security team was.

One witness said this type of bomb could have caused a lot more damage if certain things were added and a lot of campers are fearful of another attack. Thankfully no one was injured last night but police investigators were on scene for 2 hours to identify the chemicals used and to try to find out who is responsible.

The suspect car is said to be a Silver 4-Door Sedan from the late 80s-mid 90s and possibly a Toyota or Nissan and if you have any more information, you are encouraged to contact the Portland Police Department at 207-874-8575.

While I don't really agree with the OW# movement's position, this truly is reprehensible and that person needs to be punished to the full extent of the law (or thrown into Guantanamo). Attacking fellow Americans when you disagree with their views, is the biggest problem with this country. Whether you are on the right or left, demonizing the other side, or even placing people into generic groups such as right, left, red, blue, will never lead to us being able to solve serious problems. If you want to stop the problems on main street, wall street and K street, get rid of the current political party system and let's start talking as people.

Just think this was an act by an American on Americans. Some here say it was a kid prank.  Some say it was a simple dry-ice bomb. It doesn't matter. What matters is that it did happen. Fortunately no one was injured or worst.

$100 says it was something along the lines of a dry-ice "bomb." It was clearly stupid and dangerous, but is the over-dramatization really necessary? It lifted a table that "generally requires 2 people to lift and move." That sounds like the kind of ambiguous description you could use to describe everything from a massive cast-iron desk to a dinky plastic picnic table. I've got a feeling it was closer to the latter than the former.

I can only imagine someone from a country that has experienced a real IED and seen it up-end a humvee or flatten a building read this silly article.

The saddest part is in my opinion is that driving a model from the 80's or 90's this person is one of the 99% but do not want to admit it.

Did it have anything to do with a portable meth lab?

The point is that, had the 'bomb' been thrown at any other type of gathering, it would have been treated as a terrorist threat. As it happens, I can almost hear the snores coming from the local Police who are 'investigating' the matter.

IED just means "improvised explosive device." it was definitely improvised, it definitely went boom, it was an IED. it wasn't imaginary. ergo, a real IED. it was 4a.m. so nobody was around. so nobody was hurt. why do you have a "feeling" it was closer to the latter than the former? why are you assuming this is being over-dramatized? this article does not seem dramatic at all to me.

You're an idiot. The best way to completely derail the movement is to turn it into a riot. We have the moral highground, and I can see it working. Slowly, but surely we will win this... but not if we get violent. That's just giving the mainstream media fuel to discourage others from joining us.

Absolutely true.  I condemn the attack as an act of cowardice and evil, but instead of jail, Guantanamo, or other evil punishment, I wish the perpetrator would be made to pay for, prepare and serve the gathering food.

I certainly hope that doesn't happen. Fortunately the "occupy" movement isn't advocating communism but a redistribution of wealth and power

I could find no reference to support your claim of 20%.  Did you have one, 'patriot'?

Not sure what is more sad, condemning optimism or having 19 others liking the condemnation of optimism.

I wondered how long it would take to get the "well technically it WAS an IED by definition" response. It never fails that the concept of connotation floats over the heads of the Internet commenter masses.

If you don't find something over dramatic about using the same label for a pressurized Gatorade bottle as is typically used for a devicetypically guerilla warfare to destroy armored vehicles and buildings, then we probably won't see eye-to-eye.

And I'm sure you have 100% irrefutable proof that the bomb throwers were inspired by nationalist ideas.  Right?

America can't even make a proper IED anymore, what has this country come to?   Maybe the terrorists could teach us a thing or to about ingenuity and discipline, amirite?
