Large Sections of Lower Manhattan Left Without Cable or Internet Today [Updated]

We've been hearing reports from all over the East Village and the Lower East Side that basically no one has had cable or Internet for the last day or so. The conspiracy-minded among us might think that this has something to do with the crooked super holding Time Warner hostage on Second Avenue, but the reality is much more boring: according to Time Warner rep Bobby Amirshahi, fiber damage occurred near Baxter and Grand Streets. Oh.

As for when you'll all get your precious cable TV and Internet connection back? According to Amirshahi, it should be back on by the end of the day.

According to a tipster on the Lower East Side, Time Warner's helpline has been down all day, though their Twitter account has been "surprisingly helpful."

DNA Info says there are 20,000 people affected. Sucks!

Things to do if your Internet/cable is out:

  • Read a book
  • Occupy Wall Street
  • Take a nap
  • Enjoy face-to-face interaction with family and friends
  • Return to a way of life that now seems long-forgotten; a time when our lives weren't spent in front of glowing screens, when we felt the fresh wind in our hair and worked all day in a cornfield, rising with the sun.

In the meantime, go visit someone uptown.

Update 4:57 p.m.: A new statement from Time Warner: "Most customers are back online as of 4 p.m. today and the remainder will be online quite soon. Also, we'll automatically credit all cable customers affected by this outage."

It did briefly cause me to realize that I have forgotten how to live. But it's back on now...

Darn, the super holding cable hostage was actually a lot more fun :).  Why can't the most interesting explanation be the true one for once :(.

Still, it gives people a chance to do other things, like that scene in the Simpsons where there is no television and the children blinkingly go outside to play.
