Nancy Pelosi Comes Out In Support of Occupy Wall Street, Kind Of

video platformvideo managementvideo solutionsvideo player

The dreaded political co-opting of Occupy Wall Street began in earnest yesterday when Nancy Pelosi appeared on Christiane Amanpour's Sunday morning show and (kind of) lent support to the Zuccotti campers. "I support the message to the establishment, whether it's Wall Street or the political establishment and the rest, that change has to happen," she said. "We cannot continue in a way that is not relevant to their lives."

Of course, Pelosi is a part of the establishment the protesters are so fed up with. Thus far they've been aggressive about maintaining the political independence of their movement, or at least the appearance of it. At last Wednesday's union/OWS "megamarch," Michael Moore exhorted the crowd to avoid getting involved with mainstream politics. "Do not let politicians co-opt this movement," he said.

And this Reddit poster, who claims to be a disgruntled Tea Party member, gave the same kind of advice, predicting what would probably happen to OWS:

Someone in the Democratic Party will feign sympathy for the movement and falsely "non-partisan" entities provide tons of funding and unwanted organization, just as was done with the tea party movement by Republicans. Once people assume that the pro-corporate government operatives are their friends, they will hijack the movement and the threat of your movement will be neutralized.

With Pelosi leading the way, will other Dems follow suit?

An American
An American

This past week, after the media finally took notice, after labor unions offered endorsements and joined in marches, after prominent conservatives publicly attacked the movement, Barack Obama, Nancy Pelosi, and other top Democrats suddenly spoke out in support of Occupy Wall Street. In reply, I'd like to offer these questions. When the decision was made to bail out huge financial institutions, regardless of their contempt for the law, regardless of their culpability in causing untold misery for tens of millions of Americans, and to leave those ordinary Americans to fend for themselves, how did you vote? What did you say? When decisions were made, repeatedly, to enact tax bills that favored the rich at the expense of the poor and middle class, how did you vote? What did you say? When illegal and unprovoked  wars were being planned and launched, wars that would kill hundreds of thousands and drive our country into unimagined debt, all the while enriching the richest, how did you vote? What did you say? When, later, the subject of investigating our nation's former leaders for (sometimes freely admitted) war crimes was raised, what did you say? When the rights of all Americans were being eroded by the sweeping surveillance and detention powers granted to the President by the so-called Patriot Act, how did you vote? What did you say? When telecommunications companies were let off the hook for their voluntary complicity in illegal spying on ordinary Americans, how did you vote? What did you say? When thousands of people, including Americans, were (and still are) being extra-judicially imprisoned and tortured, what did you say? When the current President responded to the malfeasance of Wall Street by surrounding himself with finance industry insiders with absolutely no interest in reform, what did you say? Your words and votes are on record, and we will hold you accountable for them, and for your stunning, crass, opportunistic hypocrisy in trying to benefit from a movement that is nothing, if not a repudiation of all that you have done and enabled done to America over the last decade. This isn't your movement, and it isn't your time. Not anymore.
