More than 100 Occupy Boston Protesters Are Arrested So As Not to Damage Shrubs

Occupy rallies and protests have been happening all over the country since the movement began at Wall Street 25 days ago, with arrests occasionally punctuating the effort, as we saw last Wednesday after the massive march from Foley Square to Zuccotti Park. One of the latest mass arrest incidents happened in Boston early this morning, with more than 100 protesters reportedly arrested after clashing with cops. The main reason for these arrests, which happened when some 1,000 demonstrators tried to expand from Dewey Square, where Mayor Menino says they may stay, into the Rose Kennedy Greenway? Landscaping.

Officials want to keep the protesters out of the greenway, fearing they will ruin recently planted shrubs that cost the city $150,000, according to The Associated Press.

And from the Boston Globe:

Officials do not want the protesters, who originally settled in Dewey Square, to occupy the space across Congress Street on the Greenway because it recently underwent a renovation project where expensive improvements were added, according to Elaine Driscoll, police spokeswoman.

The cops apparently warned protesters "before the arrests began." They were given two minutes to leave the Greenway, but a group stayed, chanted, and then was arrested. No protesters or cops were injured, though one cop was hit in the face.

Mayor Menino says that though he agrees with the protesters on the issues, they shouldn't be allowed to "tie up the city." (Or, it seems, ruin any fancy bushes.)

clearly a lack of communication from the beginning. Anarchists have no respect for bourgeois concepts such as landscaping...... as a landscaper I see the concern, yes they should have stayed off of the grass but a shrub is not a human being.  Is $150,000 garden worth beating folks?

I am totally in sympatghy with Occupy Boston, but they should have known (at least some of them) that the Rose Kennedy Greenway is a pet project of City Hall that has taken years to launch. People  in that neighborhood an d across the city really love that park.  I don;t see how Menino could agree to have them there. If they need to expand outside Dewey Square, they need to be smarter about where they expand into. That said, the way it was done was pretty ugly.

Naturally, according to some of the arrestees last night, the first thing the cops did when they stormed the area was to trample all over the plants, and stood on top of them as they staged the mass arrests.  They killed the special plants in order to save them, I guess.

This claim by the Mayor and BPD is in spite of an apparent agreement between the protesters and the group the oversees the park, that the protesters could stay as long as they were careful about the new shrubs. Protecting the landscaping is just a flimsy excuse.

Oh please...the WORST thing that could happen for OWS is for there to be no arrests, no scandals, no celebrities, hoopla, etc. This stuff is what (sadly) drives media coverage, which is what gives it exposure and therefore has allowed it to expand. Otherwise it would be just one more protest that would eventually shrink and fade away. No, I wouldn't want to be maced by a sh*thead cop, but I guess you could look at that woman as "taking one for the team". Just sayin'...

Also, after the arrests, police pulled up dump trucks and threw all of the protester's tents, medical supplies, and other personal property into the trash compactors. Nice work BPD.
