Video: Man Run Over By a Police Scooter This Morning at Occupy Wall Street

As we mentioned earlier, a man was run over by a police scooter this morning during one of the tussles between cops and protesters in the Financial District. Now some unsettling video has surfaced:

The man is reportedly a legal observer for the National Lawyers' Guild. C.S. Muncy also snapped some photos of the incident for the Voice:

After being run over, the man was arrested and hospitalized. He is apparently being charged with disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, obstruction of governmental administration, and two counts of criminal mischief, according to Gothamist.

Update 5:34 p.m.: Questions have been raised about the authenticity of the incident. A photographer for the Daily News says that the man, who's been identified as Ari Douglas, staged the whole thing, putting his legs under the bike even though it didn't actually run over him. Who knows!

If it was staged how come there was blood on the ground and the man's face all scrached up.How come you believe one staged man's opinion and not the many who also saw it happen. How gullible are you.

We can't be sure of anything like this one way or another until all the evidence is in. Remember this, though, during the civil rights unrest of the 1960s, the FBI and local authorities around the country sent people in undercover to pose as students and protestors. They sent them in to spy and to do things that would discredit organizers and the movements. Special interests have even more wealth and power behind them now than they did then. Fortunately, every person and their pet has a camera of some kind too.

The cop was beeping his horn, but if a citizen refuses to move, police do not have the right to hurt the citizen. Unless a person is in the act of committing a crime that is harming someone else, police are never supposed to even be rude to citizens, touch them, or unduly manhandle non-violent citizens even when arresting them because the police are public servants not brown shirts. We don't live in a military or paramilitary state.

That's something the current generation of police weren't taught apparently, considering the news from around the country of all kinds of people of all ages being arrested, hit, shouted at, pepper sprayed, ordered not to film what is transpiring, phones and cameras illegally confiscated, and man-handled just for asking questions or expressing themselves without physically threatening the police. Maybe we do live in an authoritarian paramilitary state after-all. It sneaked up on us when we weren't looking.

If this kid is a jerk, the cop made himself vulnerable to the ploy. If it is an intentional plant trying to get press attention that undermines the protest then the public should find out. Either way, though, if the young man was laying in the street then it doesn't matter how slow the officer was going, how heavy the bike was, how injured the young man is, or even if he is exaggerating, the officer never should have risked running over him but should have stopped. Anyone who loses track of the core of the matter is ripe for embracing authoritarianism until it bites you in the behind.

It's also important not to be sucked in by media attention paid to the few numbskulls when there are thousands more there not behaving like numbskulls. The media always reports on what is most sensational and will give them the best photos for selling the cover or site for the day, even if it is one person out of thousands doing something the other thousands do not approve of. So don't pay attention to silly stuff and stay focused on the meat of the matter.

Watch how it's his left foot under front wheel, then the right foot under back wheel. If he was in that much pain he would draw his legs in, not let them hang out there for the next one to get hit. He's placing his feet under the fronts of tires on purpose.

Call this faker out, and show that this is a truthful movement.Watch other video and you will see he laid down and starts screaming and places his feet under a barely moving scooter.

Seriously, if this guy purposefully put his foot under the police scooter, he really is giving the Occupy movement a bad name. Cut the theatrics! Don't create problems where none exist. We've got enough real problems to deal with, without our own people destroying our reputation.

Alright, cops are quite often thug-like, BUT this was not the case as clearly the dimwit-pansy who lied down to play like he was hurt when the scooter pinched his leg was wrong.

I've been sitting, walking keeping my very sick wife and sons up and moving with a broken leg which I cut the cast off of w/o pain meds day after the dr put it on after plated and screw surgery (also moved my self built 4000 sf houses' belongings to storage and a small house due to the corruptly foreclosed home by GMAC when GM shut down my Automaker business..... (So I do feel for the OWS groups).

So......  No "dude" you don't go and get your leg pinched by a "200 lb scooter w/ 190 lb cop sitting on it" and scream like a little girl for attention. You need you ass kicked once the bruise turns green just for being panty-waste.

If either OWS or the TEA Party want things fixed, along with anyone but the fringe left or right, you MUST back MEALER2012.  http://mealer2012.com

what happened to horses? I'd love to see that crybaby get stomped on by a 1200 lb stallion, oh maybe he'd like that

Cop should have shot him to put him out of his misery. It was the only humane thing to do - considering how much pain he was in and all....

This is hoax guys! if you check out the video 7 seconds in, his was in front of the first wheel of the scooter. At the same time, the officer was already turning the front wheel of the scooter to avoid further injury. If you then check the video out 10 seconds in, the officer then proceeds to move his vehicle at least 5 inches away from the 'run over foot', and all of a sudden the guys foot is now caught up in back wheel.

This is the kind of behavior that arouses negative criticism from those that we're trying to gain attention from.

why the hell is he screaming like a little bitch?  i've been run over by a quad at least twice the size of that scooter and laughed it off.  fucking americans....

There's a much better clip on vimeo and the scooter was not traveling at 2 mph. Anyone who thinks this was "staged" this himself or herself just shooting hot air out the pie hole.

philip navarro

look at 0:06. His legs are not under the vehicle. In fact they are in front of the vehicle. He eventually inches his way to the back wheel and wedges his leg under it. Does nobody else see this?

debonair

In the opening scene of the video he appears to be  one of two individuals that approach the scooter from the left side.   Because of additional crowding there is nothing showing how the guy ended up on the ground.  The scooter seems to not be moving,if it is, it must be a dead slow movement with very minimal MPH. Interestingly in the first glimpse of the guy on the ground his right leg is in front of the front wheel of the scooter.   After some wiggling around his right leg is then jammed in front of the rear wheel.  The scooter does not seem to have moved during the whole time. IMHO,this seems staged. Lawyer? Accident? Unlikely.  I'm of the 99%.

Ihatehippies

First off... An attorney? Doubtful... An attorney knows not to stand in the middle if a ROAD... As it's for traffic.... Secondly.... A lawyer would move for a peace officer instead of blocking him from his appointed duties.

I am guessing this loser is a failed drama major who had his mind poisoned at one of our fine liberal colleges... No doubt by a 60's era pot smoking left win lunatic professor trying to relive his glory days (all while being paid by the government and big businesses whom he mocks)

Glad he was arrested... I would've added charges for staging the event for the media and double charges for horrible acting.

If I was the cop.... I would've put on my front brake and floored it... The spinning rear tire would have kept the loser from trying to put his foot back under for the cameras.

Serves the douchebag right.

A couple of things. Firstly, the scooter was traveling about 2 mph at the moment of impact which we don't see , by the way. Secondly, judging by his screams of "pain" you would think that his foot had been ripped off. I would like to know exactly what that young man was doing right before "impact" & what his "injuries" are before I make a judgement.

I'm extremely impressed with your writing skills as well as with the layout on your blog. Is this a paid theme or did you customize it yourself? Either way keep up the nice quality writing, it is rare to see a nice blog like this one today..

Should charge him with fraud in addition to resisting.

Randy,

I've looked at it several times.  You're right that the bike wasn't going at 2 mph-it was actually stopped, his legs were in front of the bike and he put them under the bike to make it appear like they were stuck/run over.

deanfox
deanfox

Yeah, that's what I think I see. I still support the protests despite having my doubts about this incident.

Dennis Downs

Additionally, it appears that his leg moves further under the bike as he is squirming by the rear tire

Exactly!  Like how the police supposedly "tricked" them onto the bridge, despite the many videos of the police warning them to get off the bridge.  Not to mention, what reasonable human being doesn't know that you don't walk in the middle of the roadway on a bridge?

So i guess the Fox,Koch and freedomworks orchestrated/funded tea party protests were authentic? Imbecile.

I love how when conservative jackasses waving guns and threatening signs do this its patriotism, but when a bunch of unarmed kids do it people like you and Collin call it terrorism.

Macsplusmore

I don't know what you are looking at. When they first show him he being ran over.

Macsplusmore

But my question would be to the officer, if someone is laying on the ground around the presence of a vehicle, why continue like there is no one there? Get off the bike and make the arrest instead of continuing like you don't see him on the ground, then all this is prevented.

deanfox
deanfox

I support the protests in so much as they express displeasure at the massive and unjust distribution of wealth but I'm not sure about this incident. On the one hand having your ankle caught at a funny angle can be painful in the extreme as tendons and ligaments are stretched and on the other it's hard to tell from the video if it was staged or not; not sure but at one point he seems to slip his foot between the front at rear tire, I could be wrong.

The only way to know for sure is by seeing a medical report on his injuries or better yet the injuries after the fact. There should be noticeable bruising and swelling as a result of this incident were it genuine.

Harriok
Harriok

The bike weighs 600 pounds MINIMUM. The force of that weight at the point where rubber meets human flesh is enough to pulverize the mans foot. I should know, it happened to me 30 years ago and I still limp!

Collinitzki

What do you suppose he was doing that would justify being purposely run over? And how does the extent of his injuries factor into it?

What we think we see is the same as seeing nothing, so the jury should stay out until solid information is clear.

The point is to get the phony info repeated over and over in media till it becomes real to people-even if it wasn't.  I still have a friend that believes that people were "tricked" about the bridge, even after showing him the videos, because it's all about manipulating peoples' emotions.  This guy should really be charged with fraud in addition to resisting.

Not to mention all those people the Republicans bussed into Florida to stage "protests" harassing the Floridians trying to count ballots during the George W/Al Gore presidential race! The news media was all over that, except they forgot to report how many people were actually there doing the hollering and pounding, and where they really came from.

He did get off the bike and make the arrest.  Prevented? Lol, so clearly staged.

200 lb scooter. cop at 190 lbs... pinched leg (not run over) he's bruised at worst and his shaven legs would have allowed the jeans to slide over him. I'm sitting here now with a plated.screwed Fibula and no pain from the day I broke it moving Mealer protoypes when GM and GMAC stole my home and Automaker HQr's which were not under the GMAC mortgage until they bought it from my local lender on April 1st.

A fully dressed Harley weighs 600lbs, My Triumph Rocket III weights 650... This scooter is light enough to be hefted onto a wall rack.

Derek

One time a car (3,000+ pounds) ran over my foot. It did no damage. I don't limp now, and I didn't then. This guy is faking it. Or he has really bad osteoporosis....

Anthony M Perez
Anthony M Perez

Are you nuts? That little scooter can't weigh more than 400 dry weight. I'm for the groups getting out there and being heard, but this had to be staged. There is no way he got that hurt. I used to own at 2009 Suzuki Katana 600, and that weighed close to 600 pounds plus another 250 pounds (me).

No, this really had to be staged and will hurt the "credibility" of the rest of the protest.

Ron

If that's a standard Piaggio BV200 gas scooter, its dry weight is 359 lbs. (Add fuel and cop.)

There are other videos of this occurrence from different angles. The guy on the ground is seen trying to stick his feet under the bike while he's screaming. It's an act to make the police look bad. I know real bad stuff has happened there, but this particular incident aint real.

Collin

Yes, I think he deserved to be run over. Screw the wall street terrorists.

Jroman71

I never have a problem admitting that I'm wrong when I am, I just like to know all the facts which is what we're always demanding of the police. The Daily News is reporting that one of their reporters witnessed the young man purposefully place his leg underneath the scooter to make it look a lot worse than it was. For the most part I support OWS, but this type of stuff damages credibility.

Macsplusmore
Macsplusmore

Hahaha! You're right! But after he ran him over? C'mon!!!!

clustermagnet

Guys,  lets not get into the dry/wet weight of production motorcycles...  but Harriok is absolutely right...

359 dry weight is factory spec... many times on drawing boards before the bike hits production.   After adding 40 lbs for fluids and lights... and adding a NYPD monkey... you get your 600 lbs.

Also, the narrow tire profile/contact patch makes this scooter a much better chisel than a horse.

Doesnt look like much, but if you wish to prove me wrong, you'll have to do a live demo on youtube :)))   I warned ya.

You sir, are a moron. Although there is no proper definition, and countries define it in different ways the basis is...

"The term "terrorism" comes from French terrorisme, from Latin: 'terror', "great fear", "dread", related to the Latin verb terrere, "to frighten". The terror cimbricus was a panic and state of emergency in Rome in response to the approach of warriors of the Cimbri tribe in 105BC. The French National Convention declared in September 1793 that "terror is the order of the day". The period 1793–94 is referred to as La Terreur (Reign of Terror). Maximilien Robespierre, a leader in the French revolution proclaimed in 1794 that "Terror is nothing other than justice, prompt, severe, inflexible." - Wikipedia

The aim of Occupy Wall Street is not to terrorize, It is to bring light to a great social injustice created by a combination of big banking & our own governments. By your logic, the United States was founded by terrorists. As far as I can tell the only acts of terrorism have been perpetrated by the various police forces. Have you ever been struck with a night-stick for exercising your first amendment rights? Didn't think so.
