Watch a Guy Bike Broadway's 13 Miles in 5 Minutes

Scott Lamb, the managing editor at BuzzFeed, recently took on the streets (or, specifically, street) of New York City to cover the 13 miles of Broadway by bike from top to bottom, filming it by helmet cam and then speeding it up 2,000 times for your viewing pleasure into just five minutes of daring via time-lapse videography.

He says: "The whole ride took about an hour, and the video is all one take except for the very end when we circled up around Bowling Green. My personal highlight was almost running over Mickey and Minnie Mouse just below 42nd Street -- they were out doing some sort of promotion but would NOT get out of the way. Besides that, the most surprising thing was how few other bicycles we saw -- I guess most people (wisely) choose other routes to navigate the island."

Too fast to be fun to watch.  Could have been interesting.  More informed comments on that bike route would be welcome; it doesn't look protected.

Most of the stretch from Columbus Circle to Union Square has a protected bike lane. The problem is that pedestrians think of it as an extension of the sidewalk.

Speeding 1 hour into 5 minutes is 12 times, not 2,000.

I've ridden my bike down parts of Broadway, but my main complaint is not that it feels dangerous but that it feels slow, especially between Columbus Circle and Herald Square (both due to shameless pedestrians on the bike lane and due to the timing of red lights, at which I *do* stop most of the time). Seventh Avenue is much faster for this stretch but it does feel a bit more dangerous. Uptown, Broadway is not too bad, but it's very close to the Hudson Greenway, and I'd rather take the Greenway.

I wondered if I was the only one that was going to catch that.

That was cool.  But I will never ever ride my bike down Broadway, you are taking your life in your hands.  The part at the end where he is salmoning against traffic = death wish.

if you are referring to the immigrants in mickey and minnie costumes posing for pics in order to make ends meet then yes, how DARE they get in your way with "some sort of promotion" (souce: online.wsj.com/article/SB10001...
