Vehicle on Fire Reported in Midtown, Near Macy's [Updated]
We're hearing reports that there's a school bus or another vehicle on fire at 35th Street and 7th Avenue, near Macy's. The Corcoran Group has Tweeted a photo, saying, "A truck is on fire outside Macys on 7th Avenue, sounds of explosions nearby."![]()
The FDNY tells us there is smoke in the area at 7th and 42nd Street, but they don't have confirmation on it being a school bus. "We have companies on the scene and it is developing," we were told. The call came in at 8:33 this morning.
According to @NYScanner, no injuries have been reported. We'll update as we have more information.
Update: 34th Street appears to be completely closed with fire trucks in front of Penn Station.
The vehicle does appear to be a small school bus, and, per amNewYork:
"A school bus caught fire on 7th Ave. b/w 8th and 9th. FDNY tell us no injuries, bus was empty."
Here's a photo from @MeierGroupNYC:
The FDNY confirms that there are no injuries, and no ambulance was needed -- the bus was empty. It was "a small fire handled by one ladder," they told us, and not suspicious or terrorism-related.
Additionally, "due to a rail condition at the 34th Street-Penn Station, please expect delays in downtown trains at this time," reports the MTA.
Update 2: Here's video of the bus on fire.
This could have been worse, apparently: DNAinfo quotes a witness as saying everyone got off the bus just in time.
NY1 reports that 7th Avenue has reopened and the bus fire has been cleared.
