Juan Manuel Marquez: Did He Play Footsie With Manny Pacquiao?

It's amazing how many years you can watch boxing and still miss the obvious. I've now watched last Saturday's welterweight title fight between the champion, Filipino Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao, and Mexican challenger Juan Manuel Marquez, twice and did not notice what is clear as a bell for round one in a video that has gone viral.

Most writers I know, even those who, like me, scored it for Pacquiao 7-4-1 -- pretty much as HBO's Harold Lederman, who had it 8-4 for Pacquiao, saw it -- thought that something was off in Manny's hand speed and his timing when it came to moving in and out on Marquez. Well, there was something wrong: Marquez's feet.

The undeniable evidence of the video shows that at least five times during Rounds 6-12 Marquez clomped right down on Pacquiao's right foot as the champ lunged forward. In effect, Marquez accomplished with his foot what boxers often try to do with their hand when they cuff their opponent behind his head before throwing a punch. Manny had to fight against Marquez's full body weight when throwing right hooks and left crosses, and Marquez was able to hold him in position when delivering his trademark counterpunches.

Was Marquez's "foot hold" a deliberate tactic or an accident? It's hard to say, though it's difficult to believe that a veteran of nearly 60 professional fights could not know that he was repeatedly stepping on his opponent's foot and that doing so would severely impede his opponent's mobility. So far, Manny has not complained, at least publicly, but his trainer, Freddie Roach, Jr. has been twittering like mad.

Now, let's see if Jim Lampley and Larry Merchant have the cajones to mentioned this on Saturday's broadcast on HBO - and do a slow mo of the kind in the video.

By the way, the hardest blow of the night wasn't a punch by either man. It was a solid head butt from Marquez in the tenth round that produced a two-inch cut above Pacquiao's eye and drew the only blood of the fight.

Oh, and another thing. Let's all watch carefully this Saturday to see if Marquez steps on Pacquiao's foot in the first five rounds, which are not covered in the video.

Foot stepping isn't technically illegal in boxing however it's a common tactic that is looked down upon. I vividly remember Mosley specifically training to do that to Mayweather.

As for Marquez, those weren't accidents. He had to do what he had to do. I honestly think he did a great job keeping his distance, countering and stepping away from Paquiaos power left hand. I also admire his discipline for not getting caught up in a slugfest with Manny because knew that that's how u get put on ur ass. However what Marquez failed to do was take control of the ring. He depended on countering and u can't win a fight stepping back for 12 rounds. I don't care how clean ur counters are you can't win a fight on ur heels.

Manny threw more, landed more all while chasing Marquez across the ring and eating great counters. That's why he won.

As for my opinion on this fight. Some say it was boring and both fighters were sloppy. I saw something different. I saw one of the most tactical boxing matches ever. Both fighters respected each others abilities and it showed that night and I thought it was brilliant. Bravo to both champs for sticking to their game plans and not getting caught up in a steep brawl.

after repeatedly viewing this video, and that of Manny's stepping on JMM's foot, it seems to me that JMM's were "intentional". why intentional in quotes? because if you review the video, his (JMM's) stepping seem to incapacitate Manny's moves. and seem to clump Manny's foot. it's like he "accidentally" stepped on it, and left it there.

if you see the one on the 12th round, 0:52, his foot was still on Manny's foot even as Manny was stepping out.

unlike Manny's stepping (i'm sure you saw that video too), it was really short. and it only happened in the 1st round.

"clomped right down" alright...Manny did it, too, accidentally, a couple of times, but he removed his foot right away...he didn't clomped down like Marquez.

Pacquiao's lip was cut but it appears to have happened when his mouthpiece fell out. And I don't understand the rest of your post.
