FDNY vs. NYPD in Charity Boxing Match for Wounded Veteran

This Saturday, the NYPD and FDNY are occupying (ha!) Madison Square Garden for a good cause. The NYPD Fighting Finest will fight the FDNY Bravest in the Battle of the Badges, a boxing match for charity. The boxing match is happening just a week after Veterans Day and benefits former soldiers. The proceeds will go to Long Island's Lt. James Byler, who lost both of his legs fighting in Afghanistan.

The money will go towards making Lt. Byler's home handicap-accessible, with additions such as a ramp and handicapped bathroom. We spoke with President and Head Coach of the event, Bob McGuire. "The fire department has kind of a kinship with those that go out and fight terror," he said.

Last year the proceeds of the match went to veteran Brendan Marrocco. Marrocco lost all four of his limbs in Iraq. He received $7,500 to help build a new home for his family.

This is the 29th year that Battle of the Badges has taken place. As it stands, the all time score is 15-13, in favor of the FDNY. Considering their recent practice, the NYPD should stand a good chance this year. Click if you'd like to donate or buy a ticket.
