Photos: Inside the Sanitation Building Where Occupy Wall Street's Stuff Is Being Held

As we reported earlier today, press aren't allowed inside the Sanitation facility on 57th Street where the city is storing Occupy Wall Street protesters' belongings taken during the Zuccotti raid. We'd heard reports of disarray and damage inside and had seen photos of smashed laptops, and now the Voice has gotten a hold of more complete pictures of the mess where protesters are expected to root around for their things.

Kathleen Russell, a video producer and director based in Brooklyn, went to the facility this afternoon to try and find a defibrillator that she had donated to the OWS medical team. The defibrillator was a gift from her father who works for a medical supply company and is worth $1200. It had her name and contact information written on it and was in a bright red medical case.

When Russell got to the building on 57th, she gave her I.D. to the assembled cops and filled out a claims form. There was a huge room filled with stuff in disarray with a few officers sitting around a table.

"There was a box on the table that they said was for keys and I.D.'s," Russell said. "Why did you not notice a defibrillator if you were picking up keys and I.D. tags?"

Russell was told to go through all of the stuff and try to find the defibrillator. "I was sifting through tarps and tents and sweatshirts, random stuff," she said. "I was there for over an hour."

"They just tell you to go look through stuff," Russell said. "There's piles of crap with flies flying around, shit that's just been destroyed. It's mostly tarps and tents, with food and clothes. There's a section of shoes all lined up. That was the one organized part of it."

All these photos were taken today:

This looks to be a destroyed battery?

Russell's defibrillator was nowhere to be found. Former occupiers have until 3:45 p.m. tomorrow to visit the storage space and pick up their stuff, if they can find it.

It seems to me as long as the person reading knows the commenter was compensated in some way it is reasonable.

Some seriously angry comments. What in the world did OWS ever do to anyone that would warrant such viscous attacks? Are some so self-righteous, they actually believe their unabashed judgement is entitled to recognition. Yes that's right. Entitled. Maybe they didn't get the right lollipop from their first grade teacher. Luckily for the rest of us, self-righteous entitlement is easy to dismiss, leaving them all alone with their comments of apathy and anger toward someone who is actually do something more than throwing a weak angry comment on a website.

Last time I checked, if I left a bunch of my stuff in a park it would be called littering and I would be fined. I already know that the immediate response to this is that everyone was kicked out, but they had been living on private property for weeks and there has been talk of getting them kicked out for quite some time. It was going to happen inevitably it was just a matter of when. Why is it expected that if you are removed from squatting you get all your stuff back?  FYI: Not a FOX troll; I don’t have cable at all. I am an informed Political Science Major from a Major US Institution. I just see the common sense here. Its called littering, and like trespassing is illegal.

Looks like the GOP, Fox thugs are out in force posting their 'PAID' to post anti-OWS comments.  How much do you get per post for this garbage anyway?

They should charge these goons for the price of storing their bug infested rags.

Of course they can't pay, but they should still be sent the bill.

Without a doubt the harddrives and caches of the laptops and phones have all been copied.  This is the most surveilled protest movement in history.  Everyone's networks are all laid out nice and neat for the pigs. Hey I'd better go post this on my facebook page!

It's time for OWS to step it up. We are clearly just going to get more of the same from the status quo. I mean what do you expect from the cops who are taking orders from a Mayor who is a billionaire. There's not empathy there. Yet on the other side of the coin the protests need a better message and more organization. I swear there are Klan rallies that are better organized. If you're going to occupy Wall Street, then occupy Wall Street with the goal of shutting it down. When the bank were at risk of shutting down Wall Street they got 700 billion dollars of tax payer money. When the people risked shutting down wall street, they just got pepper-sprayed and their stuff stolen. A country of the people, for the the people and by the people, my ass...

Don't you find it a bit ironic that PCs are made by big evil corporations, and the Internet service is also provided by big evil corporation, yet these people are out protesting against big evil corporations?

Did you know it took 70 dump trucks to remove garbage from an Occupy camp in Portland? And that a hazmat team cleaned up 300lbs of feces in Santa Cruz?

The Internet is an international socialist government program that started out as defense department research and development grants to state universities.

1) the internet didnt start as a corporate thing, they very tech to create it was financed with taxpayer money.2) our taxes went to building the backbone3) the internet was one of the first major things to be "privatized"

4) look up the history of computing and you will see how much the govs need for missile guidance computers spurred and financed the development of the tech that made it possible for the computers that these big corps sell us today

5) what is your point craigley? should we think in black and white and ignore everything bad because they are currently providing something good...should we forget the restrictions they impose and the artificially low speed and high price? should we forget that they are sitting on 1000s of miles of dar fiber and complaining of a capacity crisis?

if the water supply(including water table) was privatized and we protested would you mouth off about how its funny we protest a life providing service when the facts are it used to be public and or freely available with a well. this may sound far fetched in america but check out fiji water.

@nygrup its doubtful they copied caches...they lose all their info pretty much instantly with out power.

I can see how badly you want there to be a problem with that, but there really isn't.

OMG!  70 dump trucks!

That's such complete and utter horseshit, based on one quote from some idiot in Portland.  It doesn't pass the sniff test.  That of course doesn't stop you stupid fucking assholes from repeating it and repeating it.  Same with the stupid feces lie.Even if they are true, who gives a shit, you ignorant fuck?  The real issue is that ordinary Americans literally get smashed in the face and tortured with chemical weapons when they violate even the most trivial of laws while rich, thieving fuckheads on Wall Street not only don't get in the least bit of trouble, but get to keep the billions of their ill-gotten gains.

Two tiers of justice.  If that doesn't make your blood boil, you're part of the fucking problem.

K Holt

Sure the internet was started with taxpayer money. But taxpayer money also goes into the pockets of government officials.

It was corporations who brought the internet to the people. It's people who pay corporations to continue what they do. Corporations make money by convincing people to give them money. Not by taking it out of taxes like the President or the rest of Government.
