Scientology's Grand Scheme of Greed Was Kickstarted by the 9/11 Attacks -- St. Pete Times

It's here -- part 3 of the new St. Petersburg Times blockbuster series about the extreme pressure Scientology puts on its members to donate money.

And we're thrilled to see this video of Synthia Fagen anchoring the report about the International Association of Scientologists and its constant begging for cash.

It was Fagen who alerted us this week to that fly new hip hop video put out by the Copenhagen branch of the IAS. If you haven't seen it yet, you really must.

There's a lot to absorb in this new installment in the series, which focuses on the IAS's hard-sell tactics, as well as the "Ideal Org" building boom.

And here's another unsavory detail: If Scientology has always been money-mad, the pressures of the last decade have been off the charts as church leader David Miscavige decided to use the 9/11 attacks as a new call to action.

The push for new cash has meant both more buildings and huge reserves for the IAS:

The Ideal Orgs drive has more than doubled the church's real estate holdings worldwide in terms of square footage. And the IAS has collected at least $250 million just since 2006, according to a Times analysis of the organization's published membership rosters.

Fagen told the Times that she left the church in 2009 after the push for money just became too much:

Church members were getting multiple calls each day -- a dozen, two dozen, sometimes many more, Fagen said, echoing numerous others interviewed for this story. Workers from various church entities called, each with their own quotas, cajoling and pestering.

Tobin and Childs also smartly pointed out that all of this high-pressure fundraising runs afoul of the best practices of the country's more legitimate tax-exempt organizations. In an informative sidebar, they point out that normal non-profits bend over backwards to show exactly how much money they raise and how it is spent. Even donors of large amounts in Scientology are told little about how their money is spent, and they don't receive financial reports from the church.

The St. Pete Times series is as explosive as we hoped it would be, and we are looking forward to even more installments. (We're going to stop predicting how many more are coming, and when, given our miserable track record so far.) But we also wanted to mention something we meant to days ago: Mike Rinder added his own remarkable contribution to the series with something he wrote at Marty Rathbun's blog.

In the piece, Rinder talks about how the IAS catered to Miscavige's expensive tastes. But it was what he said about "The Basics" that really caught my eye:

We had a time machine order from Miscavige to get a book done EACH DAY. It also included putting together a glossary for each book. This of course was insane, made doubly so by the fact that Jon [Horwich] and I were spending almost as much time answering questions from Miscavige's personal staff and his other sycophants demanding to know what we had done and whether we would "meet the TM" as we were working on the books. In the end, people were assigned to stand over us to keep us awake - we were sleeping a maximum of 2 hours a nite...

That's quite a different picture than the one Miscavige gave at the 2007 gala when he introduced the book project. He made it sound like teams of scholars had been working Hubbard's books for months. Sounds like he may have been more interested in rapidly putting together a set of materials he could sell for $3,000 a pop than in the textual scholarship he pretended was so important...

Anyway, another great chapter for Tobin and Childs on the irrepressible fundraiser at the IAS. After reading this, the words of the immortal Chill EB now take on a different cast, don't they?

We the unstoppable flood.
See, cuz we the IAS.

UPDATE: We have found it curious that the St. Pete Times is so tight-lipped about the schedule of its series. But today, we were given an explanation which might make a lot of sense. We're told by our Clearwater-area readers that on the mornings that a new installment in the series comes out, Sea Org members are mobilized before dawn to buy up every loose copy of the newspaper in order to keep the larger public from seeing the articles. In the age of the Internet, this doesn't make a lot of sense, but it might explain why Childs and Tobin's editors don't like to tip off the church too far in advance.

If it's true that Scientologists are out before dawn buying up piles of papers, I sure would like to get video of it!

I have always been uncomfortable with David M's speech outlining that the 9/11 attacks showed 'governments did not have the tools to deal with such events'.Add a few 9/11 conspiracy theories such as detailed in the 'John Gray Dossier' including some well known with  Scientologists connections (such as Adnan Khashoggi) and the mind boggles!!!

Follow up to my own previous comment...

Much has been bantered back & forth on whether Scientology works or not .... does it deliver the results it absolutely 100% guarantees?.... well, a caveat exists with this... yes, it is 100% doable... BUT.... if you do not get the results or the correct EP... (end product) ... the problem is with YOU.... NOT THE TECH.

Too bad none of you were living in the 1800's .... because this was an old standard EP from the Circus .... or "Carny Circuit" .... back then .... the precursor to what we now have as Vegas, Circus, State Fair's, Vaudeville/Off Broadway ..... you get the idea... also if you search google  searching terms, words and phrases used in the 1800's you will find many exact and like terms that appear in Hubbards work rather commonly used by many authors of that era .... exploring the links of the occult, supernatural, phenomenon and religious superstitions.... all viewed from the perspective of Modern Science... and this was the 1800's... Hubbard clearly mined this material when cobbling together his own "tricks"....

What win's people experience are mainly from the Div 6 courses.... purposely positioned by Hubbard... as a "Frontloading"..... just like in the "Carny Day" ... demonstrate... give them an experience of something that "Works".... create a gradient... or "groom the mark".... once they receive something for a few dollars that really helps them.... then move into the 'deep pockets' cycles... because that is what we are here for.... right? .... Well, most, if not all of that "Workable" material that you got "Wins" from and helped your life?.... Hubbard neither invented it or discovered it or created it.... he 'lifted' the material from various sources and other indviduals who have since gone unacknowledged for their work ...not his.

So what about "Clearing the Planet"... well good ol' Ron said it would only take about 5 years... but of course that was over 20 years ago.... and is'nt Ron supposed to be back by now? ... He said he was 'Coming Back'..... hmmm... must have gotten held up in some inverted universe somewhere....

Please excuse.... I could take this dreary banter on for many pages.... the point is... look at what was promised.... against WHAT IS. There is a HUGE discrepancy that simply exists right there in front of you.... do not rationalize it away with excuses....

Such as these Super Bad, Evil Suppresives that Rule The World and are the Real Reason Man is EnSlaved.... Ron knew exactly who they were... wrote and said it on the 'Apollo' ....  and even little davey refers to them as the reason to get more of your money..... But Where Is The List of These Names??

So, can Auditing help you.... well, yes it can... but the win's you receive are an "Accessory" to what Auditing's REAL PURPOSE is..... which is to get you to BUY MORE OF IT.... FOREVER.

Auditing is VERY SUBJECTIVE.... but the catch is.... the subjectivity is not controlled by you... but by the Auditor... or the church.

Niccolo' Machiavelli writes; In order for any government or religion to take root,There has to be some good in it.... something that works.

Anyway, is not an interesting fact that those bigoted 'journalists" in SP Times have never actually interviewed real public Scientologists on the matter they are trying to focus?LOLOLOLOLWhy only apostates who have an extensive record of crimes while in Scientology, seems to be their only focus? As a group LRH gave us many goals, a primary one being to create, “A civilization without insanity, without criminals and without war, where the able can prosper and honest beings can have rights, and where Man is free to rise to greater heights.”LRH set many goals, and every one of them is just what one would expect of someone as uptone as LRH. Goals that give people hope; goals that are positive; goals that uplift people; goals that unite people’s efforts toward worthwhile accomplishment; goals that get everyone to reach for the stars. “The only way you can really postulate any kind of a goal at all is imagination. And if you don’t postulate high-flown goals—if you don’t hitch your wagon to a star—it’s a cinch you’re not going to get up to the top of the pine tree, because it takes that much to get this much.” -LRH

Synthia knows very well the thousands and thousands of success stories made by Scientologists who are  so thankful of the efforts of SCN staff to  gently push them to what they have achieved.Tom Tobin and Joe Childs attempt to convince their few readers that donations in SCN are jut extorted money is just ridiculous, but they actually know that their only intention is to "restimulate" people on this subject. Those SP Times' merchants of chaos have failed to destroy SCN by defaming its founder at first, then they proceeded to defame the SCN Tech itself and still failed at that, then they tried the card of defaming SCN  current great leader and now seeing that they failed at that too...well, they are now attempting to go after the Scientologists willingness to donate for their religion. Jeezzz... those guys never learn.

TRUTH may be twisted for a while, but it will never be destroyed and that's why those hate mongers with an hide agenda will never see their lies succeed. Period.

"To the weak, to the cowardly, to the reprehensibly irrational, dishonesty and underhanded dealing, the harming of others and the blighting of their hopes seem to be the only way of conducting life.” LRH Ethics, Justice and the Dynamics

“COVERT INVALIDATION IS THE LEVEL OF AN SP’S SOCIAL INTERCOURSE.An SP can only restimulate another; he has no power of his own.” LRH

Just read the new Tobin-Childs piece... scary, gut wrenching, flame-throwing outrage... vindication...once again... for tactics and standard operating procedures that have been used since the mid to late 1980's.... proof, once again... that the Church of Scion is nothing but ..."A Power, Intelligence, Money & Confidence Game".. quote from L.Ron Hubbard Jr.

All of the "Emergencies" and "Attacks" and "Evil SP's" are the same excuses and reasons for mining the pockets of these people as was used in the 1980's .... THIS IS NOT NEW... just intensified .... and bald face fraud.... hiding under the sacred mantel of 'freedom of religion'.

This Karen Pouw is particularly disgusting.... what sort of degraded human would so blatantly lie in ways that are so easily transparent... proof ... yet again, that Scientology does not work.

Make no excuses for this .... Hubbard CREATED THIS... every single horrific moment of it.

If you have friends and family you care about.... keep them off Scion Property and away from their Vulture lists.

Here is another simple test for an OT8... have them sit in a chair in front of you. Now ask them to read to you a letter that is in a file cabinet and give them the exact location.... but they cannot leave their chair.   An OT8 should easily be able to leave their body at will and in a "timeless" moment view anything , anywhere, anytime.... this is OT ability.

Like the massive failure of Ron's demonstration of a Dianetic's clear ... live onstage,... which coincidentally ended the infatuation with the general public concerning the RESULTS of Dianetics... the above simple test of an OT would again throw into the spotlight the tested and proven results of an OT and their re-gained abilities....

Which I understand is the what and why all these people are pouring their wealth and lives into this cult/church for.

"If it's true that Scientologists are out before dawn buying up piles of papers, I sure would like to get video of it!"

With all the security cameras positioned around downtown Clearwater, you'd think it wouldn't be too hard to capture some video of Scientologists hoarding the copies of the St Pete Times to keep them away from the general public.Of course, most of those cameras are owned by the "Church", so it would have to be some independent business owner who had the video.

Just wondering... concerning this latest revelation about the Sea Orgers snapping up the newspapers in the dawn hours when a new piece comes out, has anyone contemplated legal action? Especially if they're raiding paper boxes- because I'm pretty sure paying for one paper and grabbing the whole boxful (if that's what they're doing) is theft.

I'm repeating a comment I made on one of the SPT articles. The series and accompanying OSAbot comments emphasize all that is tragic about this cult (unwittingly for the latter). Scientology is a hall of mirrors and scientologists must surrender everything (spiritual and material) to believe they are windows.

Gee, I hate to be a wet blanket, but just about anybody with real clout looked upon 9/11 as a potential cash-in. While the diminutive one is absolutely overt about the great cash-in, so were our so-called "leaders." Sorry, but that's simply a reality check.

Tony; an awesome title for the article! I love "Grand Scheme Of Greed" !!!

These St. Pete articles do cause me to wonder though - how much longer will this form of madness be permitted to continue?

You've been on the case for going on at least 17 years and Childs & Tobin for at least 20! Their courage and your courage is inspiring others to catch a big dose of courage so perhaps it will soon begin to seem like all-down-hill from here on in.

Thank you for all the excellent work you do on this file. It is deeply appreciated! <3 !!!

This reporting is so accurate. I can't believe the C of S doesn't even try to give plausible explanations (except they can't). Anyway, due to time constraints, of course the St Pete Times can't include everything. I have to tell this story:

An older man was called by our Executive Director who told her that he had been called 63 times in one day to be sold Basics and he told her that he was seriously thinking about taking his own life because of the unrelenting calls (harassment) from the church. Yikes! How can this be justified? Insanity.

And YES, that's what you actually are trying to say, no matter how you combine the statements you made in your comment. The truth is that SCN works and deliver what LRH said it would do.No doubts about that. The very, very few apostates who are asserting otherwise are just actually proving that!Do you know why? Well if you really know SCN you would already know the answer.Think deeper.

Synthia, thank you for speaking up.   I don't understand how public or staff could not say no after at least a few months, or at the most a year.  Year after year, decades, witnessing criminal financial acts, fraud, coercion, harrassment, extortion, why does it take this long for anyone to top and say no more justification?

In your opinion, are members and staff these days seriously mentally incapable of self protective decision making, due to this mentally abusive 24/7 environment?

Something has drastically changed for the worst  this last decade.  Is there a constant message of doomsday "any day now" coming from Miscavige?  If so, do most scientologists believe it to be true?  I'm an old timer, so I undersetand the Initial reasons of helping, improving, and immortality, etc.

Synthia, thank you very much for being so brave.  Now, as you know, your trash will be sorted; your privacy will be gone; your world may be upended.  But, it is your act of shoving it in DM's face -- and the similar acts of others who have come before you and those who will come along in future days and months -- that slowly chips away at the facade and will literally save others from wasting decades of their lives in the service of an unimaginably despicable organization.  How ironic.  They told you you were saving the planet by cleaning out your comrades' bank accounts.  Instead, it is only now, after your departure from them, that you can actually begin to save anyone at all.

Show the world *just one* clear with the abilities Hubbard described.  You can't. Hubbard's first clear, the one he boasted had 'perfect recall' couldn't even remember the color of Hubbard's tie when he turned around.  He was laughed out of the room and never again was willing to put his ridiculous claims to the test.  There are no clears, no OT's, no one with super powerz. Hubbard said it only takes one OT to 'make it go right'. Karin Pouw is only a rubber stamp signature at the bottom, she is only a front for David Miscavige's lying skills and unbelievable responses to the St Pete Times documented story.  Labelling those who come out and speak "apostate" (a person who renounces a religious or political belief or principle) is not even true as Miscavige's Church and altered policy and practice is not the religion as founded by Hubbard.

MarkStark
MarkStark

Karin Pouw is not standing tall. She doesn't even seem real, because she isn't appearing in person or even on video. With Tommy missing, it just makes it all the weirder.

With this level of exposure of their money-sucking extortion tactics, even the spokesholes have to hide and hope no one notices or asks about the articles in the major media. They are hoping that won't happen. They don't want any talk of Rex Fowler, blocking doors, regging people out of their life savings etc. to ever reach the top TV networks.

Imagine if people considering taking courses, get wind of all this. They may face being constantly harassed for money from their first weeks in the cult. Having members show up at their houses, to force them up the bridge, and donate until they are broke.

We strongly suspect WHY Tommy is not here. He told the truth! You can't do that in Sciloontology. At least, not a truth as big as he told...that if Hubbard were never blind, therefore didn't heal himself using Dianutty, then the whole thing is based on a lie!

That truth is going to haunt this cult until its last days. And just wait until Wright's book comes out.

Something drastic has happened in the last decade and more specifically the last 5 years. It's called "Straight up and Vertical" where DM took it upon himself to, at a very rapid pace, commit all of the parishioners money to fund his grandiose ideas (apparently helped along by Tom Cruise who allegedly complained to Miscavige that orgs were too "downstat" for him to send people into) of what it was going to take to clear earth.

It is a pressure cooker. It's hard to explain in this short space. Maybe I will create a blog posting about it and really examine how people are willing to stay in this environment. Of course it is insane.

There are lots of people sitting on the sidelines waiting for something to change. Most people have been conditioned to believe that real Scientology only exists inside the church and for those who want to continue with it (I am not one of those), leaving the subject entirely is not an option.

There are far less public inside orgs and fewer staff. It is disintegrating.

Thank you. I do need to make the correction that I only worked for the IAS for exactly 2 1/2 years as the IAS Membership Officer. I did, however, work close to them for 20 years as was reported. I was a Scientologist for 25 years and all Scientologists deal with the IAS.

The utter brain-dead cluelessness of Sciloons never fails to impress me. Some say it's turtles all the way down but in SciLoonology, it's stupid all the way down.

Synthia can PROVE IN A COURT OF LAW that she was what she said she was.

You claim to have "ALMOST 15000 between OT7 and OT8" but you can't even produce ONE of them that can demonstrate ANY of the "superpowers" promised by LRH.

Wake up and confront it!

""There are almost 15,000 people who have reached or who are on OT7 and OT8"  LIE

Nope, the target to get OT9 and 10 delivered is not only 10,000 active Solo Nots but also 5,000 active OT 8. That number is relatively close right now and that's why I said "ALMOST 15,000 betweenOT7 and OT8.

"Did you know that there are more Class 8 auditors as members of the ex-Scientology message board than all the orgs combined?"

LOL. you should have instead said "PRETENDING TO BE Class 8".They are Just like you, pretending to have worked for the IAS for 25 years. LOL.

The truth of the matter is that you Synthia are a traitor and you become such because you know what there is behind all of your justifications in trying to "save" yourself from your own real judgment. that's why you need all those people in here to make you 'comfortable" with your real condition.Wake up and confront it!

I just want to thank you, Syn, for all you do. Between, Scilons, Indies and Exes, you really are one of the most sanest voices. You will be ok, you have an increasing number of friends in every category I mentioned above. Oh and "wogs" too, translation: human mankind. Keep up the good fight. Thank you!

Derren Brown British mentalist can do awesome stuff that pisses over the nebulous claims of OT powers.

Scientology does what other religions do, gives people who need it some thing to believe in that makes helps them get through life.

It does not give anyone super powers, at best it makes them more confident and provides them with purpose; something that can be achieved by cognative behavioural therapy for a lot less money.

Maybe Karen is actually Davey.... cross-dressing and sitting at his $14,000 laptop...ticking out little 'closed circuit' replies that is replying to nothing being said here..

Thank you.  I've been wracking my brain trying to remember the title of that movie.  Exactly!

Amazing—the entire operation absolutely depends on its members being fed the biggest of lies on a constant basis. While it's true that the same must be said of other self-destructive movements of various sorts, the climax of Scientology's inevitable self-destruction will be in the glare of the Occupy Movement.

The ever-entertaining Alex Baldwin has been blogging about the Occupy Movement over at the Huffington Post.

His comments reminded me that his character of Blake in Glengarry Glen Ross is both the perfect portrayal of the 1 % and at the same time, the perfect portrayal of David Miscavige as well.

Well actually now that I think about the statement, "she worked close to the IAS for 20 years, is technically correct. I was just wanting to point out that I worked directly with the IAS as an IAS contracted staff member for 2 1/2 years. I probably shouldn't have brought up the distinction.

Definately alert the reporters because Pouw will probnably claim it wrong and that you are a liar because of that.
