NYU Professor Says He Was Fired For Giving James Franco a D

Thumbnail image for Thumbnail image for James Franco.jpg
One of James Franco's MFA professors at NYU had to give the actor a D after he missed 12 "Directing the Actor II" classes in one semester. The professor, José Angel Santana, now says that the school fired him over the D and he's suing NYU in Manhattan Supreme Court. He's also taken his story to (where else!) the Post.

The way the Post reports it, Santana's case seems a little thin, especially considering the sour-grapes vibe of his quotes. For example: "The school has bent over backwards to create a Franco-friendly environment, that's for sure" and "In my opinion, they've turned the NYU graduate film degree into swag for James Franco's purposes, a possession, something you can buy."

Santana also accuses the department chairman of a conflict of interest for appearing in a cameo in a film financed by Franco.

There are curiously few details as to Santana's actual firing. We've contacted him for comment and will update if we hear back.

I would have failed him if he missed that many classes. It makes one wonder if NYU is becoming a diploma mill for those who are wealthy and famous.

It seems unlikely, coming from a school that's had more celebrities attend, both as unknowns and after achieving star status, than any school except Harvard.

Sounds like the perfesser was just an all-around jerk

Another glaring endorsement for higher education. You know, where you have earn your degree and everyone else is supposed to be impressed.

Too bad - I'll have to fire Franco and stop watching his films.I value, as do others, character.
