Does anyone know any more about this missing girl?  Did she have any problems with anyone?  Has she ever left before without letting anyone know?  Did she take her purse or any other belongings with her?  I'm a little disappointed by how little information has been released in this case.  I hope she is ok and is found safe.

Victoria,

If you truly are a writer, you would have taken the initiative to do some research on how a deaf person should be called. We are not in London, 1820, when they were called Deaf and Mute out of undereducated ignorance. I am profoundly deaf (it doesn't matter whether or not I can talk), and the term "deaf and mute" is the same as an immigrant being called a wetback. It is an offensive and politically incorrect term. And you're a writer? Please!

Does it really matter if the news reported her as Deaf or deaf-mute? The important message here is that a Deaf girl is missing. This helps alert the public that this girl may not be able to communicate to the general public. Its important to find her. That is what is important, not how the headlines read.

Define deaf: The use of the lowercase d indicates what you are. deafness is a physical description. It is the inability to hear for whatever reason. There are different levels of deafness. Deaf The use of the uppercase D indicates who you are. Deafness is an identity, a community, a culture, a mode of being. You can be deaf and not Deaf, or alternatively, considered Deaf but not deaf. "Deaf people are not disabled. The definition of disability is you have something missing from a normal person. What does 'normal person' mean? Everyone has some sort of problem. Some people have difficulty learning, some people have dyslexia and others think, 'Oh well, that's normal.' Just because they're hearing, is that ok?

WOW Really? You all complaining about the words Deaf and Mute being used together. There is a child missing, that's what is more important than the words that are being used. Im Deaf and I disagree with all of you. Stop complaining over little things and look at the bigger picture. This child is missing and probably scared to death and all you care about is how the article is being written. Grow up and get over it. All they are saying is she is Deaf and cannot talk orally. Get over yourselves.

Deaf-Mute? I find it's an insult word to say and write.  Just either Deaf or Hearing Impaired would be formal and proper words for anyone including deaf people to read or see. Please edit this.

Mentioning that she cannot verbally communicate is important to recovery efforts.  While "nonverbal" would be a preferred term, most hearing Americans do not know that word, though they do know "mute." Calling for correction in all of society, not sending death threats to one minor online writer, is the solution.

Yes the girl is our first and foremost concern. However, the writer (Victoria) is receiving backlash from the deaf community for calling us a derogatory term, "deaf and mute." Victoria needs to realize she needs to retract her term of deaf and mute and replace it with "deaf," with an apology for her ignorance. And, we all are very worried about this missing girl.

Valerie G
Valerie G

I'm not Deaf, however; I have a Deaf son and its an insult to the Deaf Community to use,  the term "Deaf - Mute" in such a time as now. What we are doing is asking hearing people to respect the culture.  There is nothing wrong with correction. We are all concerned about the young lady. An apology should be made by the reporter.. That's all we ask

As many Deaf people can, should write to the reporter.

R Ortiz

Venieca and Alex I do agree that the mos important thing here is that the girl needs to e found.

Now as a hearing person who has worked with the deaf community for 13 years I've seen the discrimination over and over again against them. I'm sure almost all if not all of those angry comments came from Deaf people who are tired of explaining the same thing countless times.

Just try to understand their point of view and don't Be judgemental.

One of them wrote, what if we said a nigger girL is lost or a wetback girl was lost? That's how strong the Deaf community feels about that issue so don't judge them if you don't know what it feels like to be Deaf and been classified incorrectly and discriminated.

Finally, a reply that is focused on the serious nature of the article. I am deaf-blind and while the terminology may be imperfect a child is missing. She needs help to be found safely. We can debate semantics later, Right now her safety is the MOST IMPORTANT MATTER!

@Nelle The dictionary says mute means "lacking the power of speech." It says nothing about reading or writing or mental retardation.

If Keyla cannot talk -- and I mean speak out loud, not sign language, since speaking out loud is what most people think when they think of "talking" -- that's VERY important for searchers to know.

Bryan D
Bryan D

PoliceOink need learn sign language too,!!                 All deaf peoples can do it any job, own, small business, CEO,,,, etc.

Venieca Louise Ellis-Mccord
Venieca Louise Ellis-Mccord

No mute means cannot talk Orally. It does NOT mean retarded or cannot communicate. Why u think there is a "MUTE" button the TV? Means the TV gone dumb? no, it means to turn off the volume. Same thing. Mute means no sounds.

You're lecturing a deaf OP about the feelings of the deaf community, as a hearing person.  How demeaning and privileged are YOU being right now?
