Snow Hits The City; MTA Works on 7 Line; South Carolina Primary Today
It's snowing! Did you notice? Winter finally decided to grace us with its presence, and it brought with it a winter weather advisory that will be in effect until 4 p.m. today. The National Weather service predicts 4 to 5 inches of snow, but says the heaviest downfall will happen before noon. The MTA says is prepared to fight whatever the snow may bring with equipment that's been "fueled, prepped and deployed near outdoor locations historically vulnerable to heavy snowfall." But don't be discouraged if you're eager to get somewhere, much subway construction has been canceled because of the snow. [NWS, MTA, NYP]
But not the construction on the 7 line, which will be shut down between Times Square and Queensboro Plaza for 11 weekends. According to NY1 the line will be getting a "state-of-the-art signal system." [NYP, NY1]
It may be cold in NYC, but things are heating up in South Carolina, where the Republican primary is happening today. And this is awkward: Newt Gingrich and Mitt Romney both have events scheduled at Greenville's Tommy's Country Ham House at 10:45 a.m. this morning. "We are more than happy to treat Gov. Romney to ham at our event," a Gingrich spokesman said, according to MSNBC. Maybe Liz Lemon should stop by. [MSNBC]
Meanwhile, the Associated Press reported that Romney said he is "neck and neck" with Gingrich. [NYDN]
Amid worries of both fuel and other forms of pollution, the search for survivors of the Costa Concordia has started up again. Eleven people died when the cruise ship ran aground last Friday night, and 21 remain missing. [CNN]
