The MTA's Evening Shutdown of 4, 5, and 6 Trains For Track Repair Starts Monday

Back in November, it was announced that the MTA would implement a new measure, which they're calling "FASTTRACK," in order to repair lines that are constantly running and, it seems, constantly in need of fixing in some way or another (some of them have been around a long time, you know!). They said they'd close certain lines for repair for up to five consecutive weeknights from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m., as opposed to the typical measure of shutting down lines for the weekend. And now...the first weekday evening shutdown period is upon us.

From Monday, January 9 to January 13, the 4, 5, and 6 will be suspended from Grand Central to Atlantic Terminal from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m., for an alleged "small army of MTA New York City Transit workers" to do more than 300 maintenance tasks in portions of the tunnels and stations to make your trip spiffier and better. Once they're done.

The MTA explains in a statement,

Fifteen stations on the 456 line will be closed to entry from 10 p.m. until 5 a.m. Uptown 456 service will be available at Grand Central-42nd-Street. Substantial alternate service is available via parallel subway corridors, though riders are advised to allow extra time for their trips.

Work will proceed along 6.7 route miles of subway, which translates to nearly 20 miles of track.

When a line segment is closed at night, customers can expect to add 20 minutes to their usual travel time. Alternative transportation options will be detailed in announcements and posters on trains, in stations and on selected buses; brochures will be available in both English and Spanish.

There are more "FASTTRACKs" to follow:

--1, 2, and 3 trains will be suspended between 34th Street- Penn Station and Atlantic Avenue between February 13-17.

--B, D, F and M trains won't run between 59th and West 4th Streets from February 20-24.

--A, C and E trains won't run from 59th Street to Jay Street from March 12-16

Meanwhile, weekend closures will continue to happen on other lines, the most immediate being the Q train, which will be suspended from 57th Street-7th Avenue in Manhattan and Prospect Park in Brooklyn from 12:01 a.m. Saturday to 5 a.m. Monday for weekends in January (starting tonight) and February.
