Ron Paul Makes Rain For His District, But No Fan of Earmarks...Huh?

ron paul.jpg
Republican candidate Ron Paul may have Libertarian leanings, but that hasn't stopped him from requesting tens of millions in earmark money from the government for pet projects in his district.

For example, in 2010, Paul asked for $4.5 million for the annual youth fair in Wharton County, Texas, population 41,000, records show. Events include the "chicken chase," "bull blowout," the "wee folks pet show," and the "princess pageant."

He also asked for $8.8 million over three years for something called the "Vanadium Safety Readiness Project." And he asked for $2.5 million for a "streetscape" in Baytown, Tex., population, 71,000, including "landscaped sidewalks, benches, trash cans, bike racks and decorative street lighting." He asked for $2.5 million for the Revelation Baptist Church and $1 million for the Kendleton, Tex. RV Park to "enhance tourism."

Certainly, worthy projects, all.

In a debate on Dec. 29, 2011, Paul defended his record on earmarks. "They take our money and our highway funds, and we have every right to apply for them back," he said, adding that Congress is out out of control on earmarks. "I never voted for an earmark, but I do argue for the people I represent to get their money back."

The moderator asked him, "Aren't you trying to have your cake and eating it too?"

"You're missing the point," he said.

A vote for Newt is a vote for the corrupt, neocon/progressive agenda and the status quo.

You clamor for change then vote for the same. Sad.

Fake tea party groups in SC are supporting Newt.. shame on them!  Newt has a million times the baggage. The tea party was formed in 2007 in opposition to Bush admin policies. Newt is no different than a progressive according to his bad record. http://youtu.be/6bNiDx7qTjA

Totally out of context. If the other GOP communists won't vote to eradicate the PRACTICE of earmarks, why should he let his states tax dollars go to some other state?  If all they can dig up on Ron Paul is this.. wow... yet the fake tea parties would support scumbag Newt?

Graham, do you plan on roasting the other candidates for the use of earmarks far in excess of those you listed above?  Or instead will you explain how the other candidates earmarks were justified instead?  What a joke...

Wow, ron paul supporters calling people stupid... really?   The whole jist of the article is ron paul bashing others for putting in earmarks, then puts his own in, but when asked about it, say's it's his job as per the constitution...  and it is, but dont throw stones in a glass house...  thought that article was pretty straight forward....  for most anyway.  ignorant and stupid is trying to change the subject away from ron paul being a hypocrite as often is the case with his supporters.

If he doesn't spend the money in his district it goes to the president to spend it on something else.  The congressman of our district is also against spending and earmarks but will use the money in our district instead of letting it go elsewhere...so it makes sense to me.  Great informative post though.  I had heard something about this in the debates and in an interview they did with him.  I have yet to hear anything about him voting on spending our tax money needlessly in a foreign country or on things the Federal Government isn't authorized to spend it on.

Ron Paul is Robin Hood. Taking his people's money back before the DC beast can give it to its cronies and kill innocents abroad.

He used the earmarks to ensure that the taxation of his district would not be without representation of the needs of his district.

If his constituent's money is taken (as tax) to fund things they shouldn't have to fund, then the next best thing is to get some of it back for his constituents.  Ron Paul believes it's the responsibility of Congress to earmark; otherwise it grants more power over the money to the executive branch.

Wow, public schools must have gotten worse than I thought.  Our Constitution, following a tradition handed down since the Magna Carta, gives CONGRESS not the executive power over spending to limit the 'kinglike power' of the executive. Ron Paul is against wasteful SPENDING so votes against the spending bill overall, but once there is a lump sum going to be designated either through earmarking it (where Congress designates spending transparently according to the Constitution) or by giving a blank check to the executive for the same amount, contrary to the Constitution, Ron Paul thinks every penny should be earmarked. So does the Constitution.

Duhhhhhh

are you ignorant or just plain stupid?  If the federal government is going to spend his districts hard earned tax dollar,  it would be morally wrong of Dr Paul to not at least try to help place some of THEIR money back into the district.  Of course he doesnt want the federal government taking sooo much of their hard earned money in the first place, that is why he votes no.again are you ignorant or just plain stupid?Ron Paul 2012

GOP commies won't vote out the practice so why should he let Texas money go to any other state? Ask him to vote to get rid of the practice and he will, but not those other GOP NEOCON commies!!!
