Scientology on the High Seas: The Littlest Sailors!

LRHCadet.jpg
In November we started a new feature here on Fridays: the Voice has obtained hundreds of copies of L. Ron Hubbard's previously unpublished "Orders of the Day," which he gave to crew members as he sailed the Mediterranean. Our documents cover the period from late 1968 through 1971, and this time we're looking at what was happening the week of January 15 through 21 during those years.

After the jump, LRH explains his feelings about child labor...

[Confused? Go here for our primer, "What is Scientology?" For recent controversies in the church, check out our stories on Debbie Cook, secrets of the Super Power Building, and spying on Tom Cruise. We know these 40-year-old ship's documents aren't for everyone, but they've been giving us some interesting insights into the mind of Hubbard as he ran Scientology from a yacht in the Mediterranean. Check back here often for more breaking news about the church.]

January 21: Good publicity!

ARTICLE

Our M.O. Dr. Steve Jarvis has just had a 2 page spread article on Scientology in "GP", the Medical Doctors' journal in the UK.

It is a splendid article, pointing up Scn's role in psychosomatic medicine.

The magazine asked for an article, three MDs in Scn submitted them. Dr. Jarvis's article won. Copies will be mailed to all parliaments.

...

ARTICLE

Coronet magazine in the US printed an article by me, preceding it with a SMERSH write up.

However, the article calmly made nothing of the attack and reader opinion is that it will do us a lot of good.

January 16: LRH explains an important concept.

The factor of income-outgo is that one must have more income than outgo for an org to live at all. This is the primary thing that ECs and staffs overlook. It is the only thing really that can wipe out an org.

This fact is not real to the DK area or Sweden even yet. FP Ed No. 1 has to be done in an org to see how much it costs to run it and how much income is the minimum it has to make, Regardless of stat pattern rises and falls, if the GI never gets up to org cost then the org will go broke and cease to exist. The Cash-Bills graph is more important than the GI alone.

DK should now be running, since reorg, on less outgo than income.

ASHO in November ran t less income than outgo (loss of $3,000) which is why there is an effort to combine AsHO and AOLA.

In management this factor -- the income-outgo ratio -- is just something that can't be ignored as it can destroy an org and is, by experience, the only thing which can. It is also the hardest thing to get across to ECs. One has to increase income to exceed outgo and also decrease outgo so it is less than income -- both actions are usually necessary.

I doubt there is a more important management datum than this. Or one which is more consistently ignored in orgs.

January 19: Ethics is madly out on the planet.

SUNSHINE

I see the crew appreciates all the sunshine. So do I.

SUMMARIES

I've reviewed program summaries of all Aides except 4. Things are not too bad. 1969 was the year of Out-Ethics. In 1970 I trust all SO members will wear their ethics hats. Every SO member has one.

Every time we ease up or drop Ethics we get horrible problems and stats. It can be plotted on the Int GI.

Fact is Ethics is madly out on the planet. Definition of some Earth wog leaders -- somebody who is trying to get even with everybody else. Definition of psychiatry: the government's method of getting even with the insane.

SHIP

The ship is doing excellently well and I am proud of all of you.

LRH, Commodore

1971

January 18: LRH on the status of "children." (Yes, the quote marks are his.)

"CHILDREN"

By FO No. 301 a Condition of non-existence is assigned to any member of the ships company that obstructs a child from doing his or her work, deprives the child of his possessions or his job.

This applies to all cadets and Middies as well.

...

GOING THE SAME WAY

If we all begin to travel in the same direction we will get there an awful lot faster and with a lot less collisions.

LRH, COMMODORE

January 19: You will not only clean those bilges, but enjoy doing it!

DELIGHT

The most delightful fellow you ever want to meet is the fellow who is doing what he is posted to do.

We have a few.

It would be wonderful if we had a few more!

At this stage of reorganization it may look scrambled here and there.

It unscrambles with

Org Bds
Posting
Mini Hatting
Full Hatting
And people then doing what their title says they do.

It is as simple as that.

...

LRH, Commodore

January 20: Whatever happened to Jo Albert? (Also, I want a "Kokomo Coaudit" T-shirt!)

DIANETICS

After working several weeks to get them on post and several days to get them assigned to auditing and several more to get them assigned pcs, I am able to announce that actual bona-fide Dianetic R3R Triple is available in the HGC.

Anyone not on some other major rundown who wants some case gains is invited to apply.

This is real Dianetics, not Kokomo Coaudit brand where the course "supervisor" went on vacation as soon as the SO Dianetic Supervisor Missionaires left in '69.

Sessions lately given here have been blowing minds.

Our 13 year old star Dianetic auditor Jo Albert hung on for six hours on one session day before yesterday and changed the pc's whole life. Secret of her success? She does flubless commands. It's real Dianetics. You should try some.

...

CONFRONT

Confront of Mest and work causes valence shifts and a run out of past non-confronts.

ISOLATION

Aside from medical reasons such as colds or flu there will be no more isolations. Instead, the person is placed on a transfer routing form.

LRH, COMMODORE

I don't know, the thought of some 13-year-old interrogating me with the same questions, over and over for six hours straight while I'm holding the cans on an e-meter in a ship tossing in the Mediterranean just doesn't sound like my idea of a good time. But whatever it takes to clear the planet, I guess.

Tony, this is a bit off topic, but wondering if you've taken the time to investigate the connection between the Church and SOPA? There are some hardcore Scientologists I've encountered who claim to be against SOPA, but from what I've read of SOPA and what it entails, it seems like something the Church would be 100% in support of.

In fact, SOPA reads like something the Church itself would have drafted since it is even more extreme than DMCA, which the Church has used zealously in shutting down websites.

If you look at the various human rights issues raised by the Church in its PSAs and the What is Human Rights booklet, the gist of the whole "human rights campaign" of the Church is about copyright protection. So the Church equates human rights with the protection of copyrights and trademarks.

Is the Church of Scientology a principal backer of SOPA done in league with the RIAA (record industry) and MPAA (movie industry)?

Roggy McGee

I am not sure Sam's posting qualifies as an "A-bomb," but props to Jorge for catching something provocative.

Sam appears to be Placido Domingo Jr.'s ex-wife.  In the comment, she intimates that the Co$ is fair gaming her, treating her as an SP, and having other Scilons (including her ex-husband?) disconnect from her and her children.  The comment may be found here: gooDOTgl/2wxV7

Because Tony is always ahead of the curve, he covered this mess months ago.  His article is here: gooDOTgl/W8Bej

It seems difficult to disentangle from Sam's comment if it's just more of the same ole $h!t with regard to the Co$ or if they've ratcheted up the crazy to Squirrel Busters nutzo in an attempt to retaliate.

For any newbies, it might be helpful to know what Hubbard meant when he talked about "ethics."  Oh, sure, he wrote such things as: "... I trust all SO members will wear their ethics hats. Every SO member has one.  Every time we ease up or drop Ethics we get horrible problems and stats."  Makes him sound downright benevolent, right?  But he wasn't talking about "ethics" as it has ever been defined by anyone else.  For Hubbard, "ethics" had nothing to do with being honorable or moral.  No, he made up his own definition to suit his purposes. Hubbard's definition of "ethics" only has to do with whether one is propagating Scientology or not.  If you do, you're ethical.  If you don't, you're unethical, or "out-ethics."  Period.

"All ethics is for in actual fact is simply that additional tool necessary to make it possible to get technology in. That's the whole purpose of ethics, to get technology in."  L. Ron Hubbard, Modern Management Technology Defined.

Lliira
Lliira

"All ethics is for in actual fact is simply that additional tool necessary to make it possible to get technology in."

Reading that sentence made my eyes cross, and that's before I considered its meaning.

Yes, Hubbard was a genius! Everyone should learn how to communicate from this man! Use passive voice as much as much as possible, and never use one word when four will do.

SleepsWithThePods
SleepsWithThePods

Middies?  At first, I thought it was mid rats (late shift or late night food leftover stuff).  Then I thought, maybe typo, and it was Kiddies.  Finally gave in and looked it up (damn you to hell, Hubbard).

The first meaning I found reminded me of another Tony blog from the logs, about those druggie crew. It was a not so high grade of weed. The second meaning reminded me of the one about the Too Sexy for My Ship crew (in particular, underaged girls).   Also reminded me of that picture of Ron the Dirty Old man looking down at one of the three underage messenger girls.

Accidentally found what I think is right, under Navy terms/origins, for Midshipmen, but in it's original context, still involving "youngsters" though, and mentioned at one time, it was a mighty fine idea to sign 'em up as early as age 8.

So now I've decided that when Hubbard used the term "Middies" he meant all 3.  Twisted.

So, about that command regarding children - sounds like someone told a child that they shouldn't have to do whatever disgusting, immoral, or abusive thing they were told to do...and then got in trouble for it. There's a rule in Scientology that says you're not allowed to have an opinion about a child's work.

And just what the hell are these children doing working instead of sitting in a proper school and learning?

The1d
The1d

The scientology lobbyist's have done a great job influencing congress to overlook child abuse in their cult yet if someone takes a picture of their new baby and the butt shows then they are all over it because innocent baby picture takers have no lobbyist's to pay money and protect themselves. As evil as scientology is it does help promote the obvious fact that when it comes to the government, money talks and justice walks.Anytime a politition claims that they care about children or anyone for that matter then you know that they are full of shit and just giving lip service to the millions of voters that they believe have no clue about anything.

Although that photo is both humorous & odd, the bigger reveal from that article is that Isabella is dating fellow $cilon Eddie Frencher.  Seems like he's the son of John Frencher.  I would imagine that the family is held in some sort of esteem if the son is fit for a Cruise.

Isabella hadn't been seen with her brother or father in ages, so there was a lot of speculation that she was living with Nicole and slipping away from the Co$.  If that was true, it looks like they've reeled her back in.  :(

Making a nugget of shit seem like a pearl of wisdom was Hubbard's specialty.  Taking 250 words to communicate that more money needs to come in than goes out, calling this an "important management datum", that's classic.

If anything had a unfortunate bad influence, in my opinion, it was LRH labeling Jojo as one of the few perfect auditors he'd seen.     Too big of a compliment, too early, sometimes puts wrong emphasis in a person's mind about their accomplishments in  life.   It probably took years for her to come down off that label, "perfect".

To those still IN but LURKING (or flying under the radar) - Do not take heed to what Marty Rathbun says on his blog.  THERE IS MORE THAN ONE OPTION for you to be secure and free of the cult.  And that is to get the fuck away from Scientology all together.

The first step to the healing process is admitting that LRon was a complete fraud and that you were lied to.

Continuing the fraud as an Indie will only prolong your suffering.

Redhead

Marty Rathbun, seems to have his own ego agenda , the more I watch him and listen to him, the creepier he appears. Every time i watch him on Utube or other media - and hes asked a question, he looks to the right , and then directly at the person asking the questions

betazors
betazors

Agree. I was never in Scientology, but have, for whatever reason, followed the saga-opera. And at first I thought Marty was a good guy (and still think he's head and shoulder's above the "church") but he has totally just, in my mind, become the leader of sci-light -- a little more humane, a little less money-obsessed.

That being said, L. Ron Hubbard is the root of the problem.

But I get it -- most people have a hard time looking at something that was a huge part of their life, for, sometimes, decades and admit that it was a bunch of brainwashing, co-opted psychology...gullibility is a hard pill to swallow. As most people think they're self-aware, when the truth is very few are.

Mimi The Great

I can honestly say the thought of "confessing my crimes" or being interrogated be a thirteen year old "thetan" would most likely lead me to a psychotic break.

It's appalling and nonsensical enough that adults are being brainwashed to believe scrubbing a toilet for hours on end with little to no pay is clearing the planet but the indoctrination of CHILDREN is as fucking sick and immoral as it gets. Using these children for slave labor, turning them into little spies against the very people that created them and stealing their souls, dreams, potential and freedom---IT'S CRIMINAL.

mirele
mirele

It's not just criminal, it's what cults do. Sadly, Scientology shows its true colors here and join those other cults that (among other things) deny children any health care or decent education. It's always the most powerless that suffer in groups like this and those people usually include children.

Interestingly enough, Jo Albert is apparently now JoJo Zawawi and she was one of the people who warned off other Scientologists from Debbie Cook earlier this month.

SleepsWithThePods
SleepsWithThePods

That would be something.  That would be 42 years of clearing the planet by merry bilge cleaning and criminal child abuse.

Since we've come to learn that scientology "cadets" (criminal child abuse) is still occurring,  I for one would love to see an interview with the FBI human trafficking director of whatever position is the correct one.  I'd had least like an answer to one question:

Why is the FBI not raiding and  arresting the adults  and providing safe harbor for these children?

Okay, two questions.  What will it take to raid, arrest, and protect these children?

Mimi The Great
Mimi The Great

Excellent question, yet we can't even get the government to revoke the tax exempt status!

I'm sad for the adults in this cult but these children never had a choice.

Heather Grace

Wowee! Jo Albert is JoJo Zawawi?

(It reads better aloud.)

Not really.

Chuck Beatty
Chuck Beatty

Thanks Mary, this hasn't damaged or hurt my liking of any of the Alberts I knew.   I got on well with all of them who I knew.   I think Jojo's just doing what she thinks right, which we know how that works.   Jojo's unfortunately just not talented enough.   Jojo probably "peaked" in her life, when LRH called her the "perfect" auditor that he thought she was, when she was 13 or however old it was.

Chuck Beatty
Chuck Beatty

Minimally it shows that the outside world culture MORE influences behavior of Scientologists in their local areas, than does ANYTHING coming from Scientology's "ethics rules system."   For one.   As I know 3 of the Alberts, I know they don't think twice about this.   Jerrye's a zany woman, and they don't give a hoot, if you ask me.   (Only interest would be OSA getting all hot and bothered and wishing to take advantage of old stories to drum up some scheme to "shut down" a critic.)    So thankyou Mary!

The 2D (sex, family, marriage, relationship) history of members, changes with the times of whichever culture the members are within.   (Hubbard in his transgressions theory writings even grants cultural influence is pivotal in what the patients think is right or wrong. These revelations are par for the history course.)

Lliira
Lliira

"Morals" are not just sexual. Parental neglect, disconnection, and people driven to suicide are immoral. Plenty of people find nothing "immoral" about orgies among consenting adults.

There is no reason at all to repost details about their sex lives. Just knowing that parents signed their kid over to Sea Org is enough. It doesn't matter what they did in their free time, if what they did was legal. And hanging out naked with consenting adults is neither illegal nor immoral.

If the parents had NOT signed their daughter over to the Sea Org, but had gotten a babysitter and then gone to an orgy, I would find nothing immoral about it. If the parents signed their daughter over to the Sea Org and then lived a"model" vanilla suburban existence, I would find them reprehensible. If the parents signed their daughter over to the Sea Org and then devoted themselves to good works and absolutely nothing else, but did not try to get their daughter out of the Sea Org, I would find them reprehensible.

What the parents did with their free time and their sex lives is a total non-issue. The one and only issue is that they handed their daughter over to the Sea Org. Posting details about their sex lives -- which just "happens" to be focused on the woman -- /does/ act as a shaming device surrounding sex, particularly of women. Scientolologists are the ones who are supposed to shame people over consensual adult sex.

You missed the point, too. This has nothing to do with morals. This has to do with parental neglect and disconnection and suicide and brainwashing. Knowing Jojo's history since her days slaving for Hubbard helps explain why she does what she does today. Those comments were quoted from the internet. Go read the posts if you have an issue with them and the author.

You missed the point. The point was to show why Jo Albert was on the ship without her parents, auditing a Dianetics PC for 8 hrs straight at age 13 for Hubbard. The other point is that Jo Albert and family abandoned their loved one by disconnection and decided that the greatest good for the greater number of dymanics was to remain loyal to Scientology, even if it means causing such distress as to cause a loved one to kill himself. This information is already on the internet and appropro to the comments about Jo Albert Zawawi's past and currentactivities as a devoted facebook policewoman for OSA.

This is a brainwashed woman who lost her youth and her father to this cult and her parent's neglect. That her father finally woke up and was shunned for it is something we can all learn from.

I agree. I see absolutely no reason whatsoever to bring that up here. Oh no an adult woman was turned on while hanging out with other consenting naked adults, how utterly evil of her! Please.

Why did you think it is helpful to write up shit from the 60s and 70s about her parents?  As a Scilon-watcher, that reeks of leaking PC folder details that no one really needs to know, and only serves to discredit your intentions.

For fucks sake...it was the 60s and 70s.  Swinging and naked hot tub activities were rampant even in the suburbs.  I appreciate your post for purposes of disclosure but is it really necessary to give that level of detail on people that are dead or not relevant now?

Jo Albert joined the SO in 1969 at the age of 11. Her parents are Rozelda ' Jerrye ' Albert and the late Alan Albert ( who committed suicide in 1996 after leaving his wife disconnected from him for his leaving Scientology.) (ref: Carmelo Orchards 6th March 2008 :  "Santa Clara, Los Gatos, Palo Alto, Menlo Park, CA."

Anybody from any of these centers from the 60s or 70s? I was at all of them.

Alan Albert left scientology and committed suicide. Jerrye stayed in, so  did Roy, Peter, and Jolink: forum.exscn(DOT)net/showthread(DOT)php?4781-Santa-Clara-Los-Gatos-Palo-Alto-Menlo-Park-CA

During the time little Jo Albert ( now JoJo Zawawi ) was working with LRH on the ship, her parents were playing fun and 2D games up in Palo Alto, according to ESMB poster, Carmelo Orchards  on 28th September 2010:

"Matt and Kurt got in around 1970-71 at the tiny little hole in the wall on Santa Cruz Ave., Menlo Park. At that time, Scientology was free in our area of 2D and naked body suppression. There were normal week end parties at the Gerbode's, the Albert's and more where dozens of naked people were in the hot tub or pool. Bruce Bishop, in the 60s, had done a naked comm course that many participated in.

In LA and in the south San Francisco Bay area parties with spin the bottle, truth or dare, exchanging partners were normal.I remember in a swimming pool in Palo Alto, Jerrye Albert sitting on my shoulders playing hand to hand combat with someone else on another's shoulders. Everybody was naked. Jerrye was saying her pussy lips were getting really turned on and hot. her husband, Alan was right there. nobody thought anything about that kind of stuff. We could all speak pretty freely."Link: forum.exscn(DOT)net/archive/index (DOT) php/t-20178 (DOT)html

Alan Albert was mentioned in a couple of news articles archived over at xenu-directory(DOT)net:

Title: Scientology boom // A disputed religion growth Date: Monday, 25 August 1969 Publisher: San Francisco Chronicle (California) Author: Donovan Bess

"Alan Albert, director of training for the Palo Alto Scientology mission, said he made $17,500 last year as a Philco-Ford executive. He quit this job after spending 750 hours in Scientology auditing — and, he reported, he makes "about the same" salary now. "

That was how Jojo got started in Scientology.

She was about 38 when her father Alan left the church and then committed suicide. Disconnection was obviously an issue in the family back then. The fact that she has gone on to police facebook as she has ( especially see Sherry Katz's story) shows that this girl is going no where. And disconnection is a matter of loyalty to Scientology.

The funny thing is that Jojo Zawawi has never made it in the music business and has to work at several different jobs to earn money to support her 'hobby'. Even a big compliment from Chick Corea hasn't helped her. You'd chuckle if you saw her Linked In 'resume'. Her mother's linked In is just as bizarre. These are diehard Scientologists through and through. But they are poorer than the average scientologist so they don't contribute much in money but make up for it in 'volunteering' . Lurkers,  do beware of Jojo (Albert) Zawawi, the OSA spy.

all above on Jojo,

She's been in and out of the Sea Org twice.   Around 1981, summer, she returned, and was in the Int Training Org, then at Clearwater, I know, she was on my "Comm Ev" removing me from post as Course Sup.

She is also praised even more highly in the "Welcome to the Flag Internship" lecture tape, which every Flag Intern is required to listen to.  LRH praises her as one of the few perfect auditors at that time.

Her parents and brother were/.are Scientologists in good standing also.   Her brother was one of the first experimental pilot "Superpower rundown" grads, but he's laying low, he's in good standing, so isn't saying much.   His wife and he blew the Int Base, his wife was Miscavige's "steward" in the dining/mess hall back in the early 90s.

So all the Alberts have ended their Sea Org careers, but are in good standing.

Jojo tells people on Facebook to unfriend me as well, I've been sent copies of her messages from several who got them.

It's be so much easier, if the official movement just stopped declaring people SP, and they instead called a huge cancellation of all the off policy SP declares of the last 40 years.

But that would be  using ARC to improve the world, and they can't be caught actually using ARC and The Way to Happiness for real,  now can they?

Hubbard wrote about how to be a third party and had his Guardian's Office (now OSA) drill it as part of their training.  You're right that she isn't working for Hubbard, because he died one week after a stroke in 1986, but she is doing exactly the kind of thing he created the intelligence arm of his "church" to do!

I know that, when I was in the Church I compromised my own sense of what is right for the imagined good for the group.

I am certain that Jojo and those like her each day struggle with their consciences. That struggle gets very tiring.

After much of this, and just seeing too many injustices and hypocrisies, finally one just throws in the towel and rejoins humanity.

I've heard those same stories. She apparently has not audited anyone in years.  Some months ago while I was still in the church she contacted me on Facebook to get me to disconnect from people who were "in bad" but not actually declared suppressive.  She was clearly trying to stir up trouble and cause a lot of upset.   She was being a war monger and spreading really nasty things but could give no evidence.  She would not just agree to disagree or even allow it to end with my contacting Ethics in the church for the actual data, she seems to thrive on antagonism and the spreading of bad news and wanted to keep arguing.  I discussed her behavior in a meeting I had with Ethics and OSA and they agreed she was causing more trouble than good though you see she claims to work for OSA and is one of their "Facebook Police". She is no longer the person people talk about who was a great auditor, this girl has become a brainwashed, nasty, third party who seems to love all the conflict going on. LRH would no longer be proud of her that's for sure and she sure isn't working for him anymore.

Yes, JoJo Albert is the maiden name of JoJo Zawawi. Albert is her maiden name. Still VERY much involved with the C of S.

I knew her in the Church under both names and I am certain they are one and the same.

I have heard many stories about JoJo being an excellent auditor. Although I am told that she is some sort of a "facebook informant" for the Church, I found her in her personal life to be a very intelligent and personable individual. If it truly is the case that she is some sort of an OSA informant, I can't imagine it will be very much longer before she wakes up and smells the coffee. She's too smart to allow herself to be continually hoodwinked. ("You're not imagining things, JoJo; "Emperor" David is actually not wearing any clothes...")Dianetics Auditing does not involve any sort of interrogation. The preclears attention is directed to traumatic moments of the past and the auditor listens and acknowledges. The current interrogation style "confessional auditing" that has been prevalent in the last many years was not in style at the time of the writing of this Flag Order.  Generally speaking, in those days, the counseling was for the benefit of the person receiving the auditing. Although there were definitely some abuses of the confidentiality, it was not rampant at the time as it became later.
