Scientology vs Marty Rathbun: An Unfair Fight?

Categories: Scientology

Last summer, we brought you extensive coverage of Scientology's bizarre siege of a South Texas home. A goon squad calling itself the "Squirrel Busters" claimed to be a documentary crew making a film about former high-ranking church executive Marty Rathbun. The intimidation squad even managed to get Rathbun arrested.

Well, here's yet another collection of their footage, as Scientology continues to try to convince someone (who, we're not sure), that a series of 2009 stories revealing the violent nature of Scientology leader David Miscavige got things wrong and that Rathbun is the violent one, not DM.

After the jump: while Scientology still argues over allegations that are nearly three years old, Rathbun keeps hitting the church where it hurts.

If you can sit through that video, did you catch that Scientology is accusing Rathbun of leading a "cult"? Is that precious or what?

Also, that narrator sure sounds familiar. Isn't he the same voice we hear on Freedom magazine's hilariously bad attacks on film director Paul Haggis and the New Yorker?

If so, it makes sense. There's really no question that Scientology was behind the Squirrel Busters siege of Rathbun's house last year, even if an otherwise excellent new story about the siege in Texas Monthly seems to leave it as an open question.

In a nice bit of investigative reporting last August, Corpus Christi Caller-Times reporter Mark Collette interviewed a freelance videographer who had briefly worked for the Squirrel Busters, Bert Leahy. Leahy revealed that the crew's boss told them that the real point of sitting outside Rathbun's house and following him around town was really just to make his life a "living hell." Leahy then identified that boss as none other than Dave Lubow, a private investigator and longtime contractor for Scientology's intelligence wing, the Office of Special Affairs.

In other words, despite its "shore story" that it was an independent crew of filmmakers, there was no doubt that the bumbling Squirrel Busters were just the latest OSA harassment campaign, in this case aimed at a man who had been the second-highest ranking executive in the church, Rathbun. (And a very expensive campaign, at that. The Busters rented a house near Rathbun's Ingleside on the Bay, Texas home, flew in numerous shifts to replenish its goon squad, paid teams of lawyers and Lubow, and kept up their surveillance of Rathbun and his wife Monique for six months.)

This latest video, which has the feel of Golden Era Productions (Scientology's filmmaking arm, housed at its desert base in Southern California), reveals once again the point of its "documentary" efforts -- Scientology is still hopping mad over 2009's epic series of articles at the formerly St. Petersburg Times, a project titled "The Truth Rundown." That series, produced by editor Joe Childs and reporter Tom Tobin -- and followed up by an Anderson Cooper series at CNN -- revealed that a recent exodus of high-ranking officials all complained that Scientology leader David Miscavige was an irrational and dictatorial man who regularly punched and slugged his employees.

Rathbun was one of those former executives, and in his interviews with the newspaper -- now the Tampa Bay Times -- he openly discussed his own beatings of employees at the urging of Miscavige. (It was after he attacked fellow executive Mike Rinder, a close friend, that Rathbun says he reached a tipping point and shortly afterward left the organization.)

In this video, what you're seeing is Scientology portraying Rathbun as a thug by quoting unnamed people describing the beatings he dished out while he was the second-highest ranking executive inside the church itself. How Scientology thinks that somehow exonerates Miscavige for his own violence is a mystery.

But this video is not really intended to make any sense. Note that there's almost no explanation of who Rathbun is, what this "cult" is that he's supposed to lead, or who is making the video and why it exists. Once again, the Squirrel Busters have been used to produce a video with only a single viewer in mind -- David Miscavige himself.

"It's just for Miscavige. He's in his own universe, and it's a dark, twisted place," Rathbun told me yesterday by telephone. "I mean, two years of following me, for these little snippets?

"To me it's so ridiculous that two and a half years after the violence issue was already covered, it's no longer an issue, and think of the cost to track me for more than two years with the intent to prove that I'm the violent one, not Dave," he said. "You see what I'm saying, Tony, how fucked up these people are? Miscavige is like a walking anachronism. He just can't get up to the times -- look at 'The Money Machine,' look where we are now."

He's referring, of course, to the blockbuster new series from Tobin and Childs which appeared in November -- "The Money Machine" -- which exposed how much Scientology is consumed with fundraising, exhausting its own people with constant appeals for large donations.

A little more than a month later, on New Year's Eve, Scientology's fundraising obsession was slammed again, this time by Debbie Cook, a former church executive who was enormously respected inside the church. Among other things, Cook criticized Miscavige for amassing a billion dollars in reserves and for not using it to bring in new members. Her e-mail to thousands of fellow church members rocked Scientology, and many longtime ex-church members say it is the most significant act of rebellion inside the organization that they can remember.

And just yesterday, as Scientology was leaking this videotape -- still obsessed with allegations made against Miscavige in 2009 -- Rathbun landed yet another blow in the current crisis over Scientology's obsession over money.

At his blog, Rathbun revealed what he says is an internal ledger showing money reserves at just one of Scientology's operations -- its spiritual mecca in Clearwater, Florida, the Flag Service Organization.

The ledger shows reserves of $150 million for the FSO in December, 2009.

"That's only FSO. That's not [the International Association of Scientologists] or Church of Scientology International," Mike Rinder told me yesterday by phone. Rinder, once Scientology's top spokesman and the director of its intelligence wing, says that the ledger is consistent with what Cook said in her e-mail.

"Those reserves are just what they keep in FSO. What they send to CSI [the mother church] isn't there at all," Rinder says. "Nor is whatever money that is given to the IAS. Some weeks they collect $10 million to the IAS."

When I asked Rathbun and Rinder whether these rather astounding amounts are an indication that Scientology is actually growing, they both denied it.

"That's what they were making when I was there," Rathbun says, who left Scientology in 2004.

"There are only tens of thousands of Scientologists around the world, but they keep going back to the same people and squeezing money from them," Rinder says. "I would say the total net is actually decreasing. But more of it is going to Super Power and the IAS, and less is going to churches around the world."

Recently, the Voice revealed wild schematics for installations planned at the new "Flag Mecca" building in Clearwater, where the Super Power Rundown will be offered to wealthy Scientologists. As this ledger suggests, there was $60 million in reserves for that project in December of 2009, which one would think would be plenty of money to finish the building (the church has said it will finally open sometime this year).

The ledger at Rathbun's blog is another rare peek inside the church as the leaks keep coming, and as more recent defectors come out and tell us that even loyal, longtime church members have been worn down by Scientology's focus on extreme fundraising.

But Miscavige, apparently, is still spending those funds trying to portray Rathbun as a "violent psychopath." Well, good luck with that.

Don't get too close to Rathbun as a source.

Miscavige is a little dwarf with a Napolean complex only a mother could love - but Rathbun is supposedly poised to take over the cult and he still depends and sells the snake oil that Hubbard invented.

Hey, maybe that's what the "oiliness" in the new Super Power Building is meant to be about!!

L Ron Hubbard was a child abuser, and his little sect of culties are practicing the same thing.

Anyone promoting Hubbard's mindfuck, no matter how good they are for a soundbite, should be treated with the same contempt that a follower of Charles Manson should be.

According to Rathbun he's been violent and hit people, he's admitted as such in interviews. He confessed as such in his church of scientology sec checks to which is where the written accounts come from so no surprise there.

Marty should have known better with the squirrel busters but he was a dumb ass, still it must have worn thin having them there and they did know all the buttons to press to get a rise out of him having all his profile on file. One only needs to look at how the church of scientology handled John Sweeney in the now infamous "you were not there" incident provoked by then church spokesman Tommy Davis to see how good they are at getting a rise out of people.

As to going shoulder to shoulder with Ursla in Germany, he's actually changed the views of the German authorities so that rather than decrying the religion of scientology they correctly target the insidious, corrupt and corrupting church of scientology organisation; I think the beliefs and a mixture of misguided pop psychology, woo'ist nonsense and mythology worthy of a 1950's science fiction novel but the issues are not really with the core beliefs rather the actions of the church of scientology - including when it was under Hubbard's control; sorry Marty but while Hubbard was more sincere and well meaning than Miscavige (not difficult) a sizeable portion of his motivation was the money and power and in the end it corrupted him.

Since Hubbard is dead however people are free to interpret the beliefs he wrote how they please and if it helps them get through the night and encourages them to do good things I'm not bother really.

This video is very telling indeed, on so many levels!

It's the battle of OT's of sorts, arguing on who's morequalified to clear this planet!

All the alleged abuses and human right violations oneither side of the fence you may have heard about arereally ARC, KRC and most of all KSW.

It's not what it looks like. Let me explain it.

The GhostBusters people are veteran OT's who are alsoa Scientology Volunteer Ministers (and accomplished film-makers). They dedicated 199 days of their lives to comfort Marty and flow him lots of ARC: next to his house, his trash, at the restaurants, beaches and airports. That's a lot of theta-support! All they wanted is to let Marty know thatthey still love him and his attempts to disseminate Scientology on his own terms, but Dave has a better idea/strategy.

But Marty is a whole track revolutionist!

When Dave sends a crew of only true professionals, riding a golfing cart, who can help someone in an accident, you know it's only Marty, who spits in their faces, while riding a bicycle to bring them in Present Time.

The whole thing was just a joke. We, Scientologists wanted to share our sense of humorwith the rest of the world, that we adore and help so much on an hourly basis.

Oh, and the Debbie Cook prank was part of it too.

We, in Scientology, love the human mankind, including Tony Ortega and Chuck Beatty.

Criticism is ok. Our sense of humor is funny! Check it out! LOL

I would like to be Scientology's next spoke person.

Now I know what the Squirrel Buster's documentary was about.

"Let's provoke Marty to violence by harrassing him for months, video his reaction and then do a smear video."

Nice--very spiritual--very enlightening.

BTW, you should look up the definition of "cult" then look at yourselves in the mirror.  You seem to have a misunderstood.

Tony, I told Scientology Executives way back when I was "in" and began to see their twisted, sick attempts to "Black PR" (spread lies) about a critic. I told them then: "YOU are C R E A T I N G Your own enemies! I've told them that, since I escaped out in 2000.They continue to do it, to this day. It's like a dry fire burning out---and THEY themselvespitch the dry logs on it----and when it bursts into Flames (against them)---they ask:"Why are they against *us*?" MORONS. Good job, again, Tony and the VV! Thank you. :)

I also find it interesting that Hubbard signed a new will after a stroke and while on medication right before he passed away. That seems suspicious to me. More so than the rifle incident.

At least DM is up to giving testimony.  Clearly he is aware that he is on trial.  But he is focusing on issues that are trivial. Where are his tax returns?  I want to see DM's tax returns. This piece of "telling on others" does not interest me. I want to know if DM is receiving book royalties on the books he has been pushing since reissuing them,  under Author Services, which he controls by the way. DM does not do his own tax returns. A human being does his tax returns. Let's cut to the chase and find out if DM has re positioned all the staff to sell books for personal profit without telling anyone he receiving royalties. SOMEONE is receiving royalties on all of book sales.

That's hilarious!

Who is the narrator? He speaks with the same bizarre cadence and inflections as Slappy Miscavige himself.

Well, the fact is that Marty should have known better. After all, he invented or improved upon many of the harrassment tactics used by the church today. And in the grand scheme of things, Squirrel Busters is rinky dink button pushing compared to the harrassment many others suffered at the hands of OSA, and church agents Mike Rinder and Marty Rathbun. There would not have been much footage had Marty not lost it when he did. And it say a lot about scientology 'tech' when you have both sets of goons doing tit for tat like that.

Today I decided to do a completely unscientific experiment:  I showed this clip to someone who knows absolutely nothing about Scientology, other than that it's a religion that a bunch of movie stars follow.  Seriously, that's all she knows.

I did this because I knew what MY reaction was to this video...but then, I also know that I have an unavoidable bias because I DO know lots about Scientology, and I can't turn off that knowledge in order to view this video from a completely objective perspective.  I was curious what someone who truly is objective would think.

So, we were having lunch in a conference room and had our laptops with us, and I showed her this clip.  I told her nothing about it - just that I wanted her to watch it and give me her impressions.

She was horrified - not at Marty, whom she's never even heard of, but at the people who were obviously harassing some poor guy on his own property, attempting to get inside his car, and stalking him in his neighborhood.  She couldn't believe a "church" would do this - aren't churches supposed to be about helping people?  How does that align with trying to videotape a private citizen in his own home without his permission, or attempting to force their way into his car to ask him questions when he obviously didn't want to talk to them? And note that I didn't tell her that this was a church doing it - she figured it out because of all the talk about Scientology in the clip.  It's clearly Scientology taking those videos, hanging around in golf carts in his neighborhood, forcing themselves into his private car.

Imagine how this looks to the average private citizen.  They see a guy trying to go about his life, being mercilessly stalked and harassed.  And then, to make matters worse, they make this videotape in which the narrator makes what appears to be groundless accusations coming directly from within the organization that's hounding him to begin with!  Creating "re-enactments" that appear to be nothing more than acting out unproven accusations, and all narrated by a guy speaking in a voice that is literally dripping with oily sarcasm.  In fact, she told me that it was the voice of the narrator that caused her to immediately side with the poor harassed guy, rather than the makers of the video.

She told me that if she'd ever had an interest in even finding out what Scientology was about, seeing this video would have made her run the other way...fast. She would want nothing to do with any organization that would engage in such horrific behavior.

I found her reaction to be hilarious.  I mean, lord knows how much money the CO$ invested in making that sick little personal-attack video...for what?  If anyone outside the church saw it, they'd run screaming!  So it's basically a highly effective anti-recruitment tool. ;-)

It never ceases to amaze me (as others here have pointed out) how childish Sciobots are? "Rathbone" is a good example. Marty Rathbun is a poster boy for WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU STAY IN SCIENTOLOGY TOO LONG.   You go insane, Marty had power in Scientology and it was taken away because he wanted more power from Dave Miscavige (INSANE).  He stills believes in LRH Tech and still audits ex Scientologist  for free.  Also his best friend Mike Rinder is still a Scientologist and they practice together.  IT is sad because they still believe in a CON mans science fiction story.  Marty needs help just like everyone that leaves Scientology they need help.   One of the most destructive mind controling cults ever NEVER JOIN SCIENTOLOGY!!!!!!!

Chuck Beatty

Has David Miscavige stopped beating and hazing staff?

Has David Miscavige stopped the Int Base beatings and hazings?   Or is he still condoning them?

One thing I've learned, is the smear pieces Scientology puts out, tend to so engulf the audience, that the obvious BIG issues sometimes get completely sidetracked.

The violence and hazing events at the Int Base have NOT been fully told, and the other side, the official Scientology side, is selectively lying about the full history.

The full history includes what others, including David Miscavige, and even L. Ron Hubbard did, per firsthand witnesses.

Otto Roos got a minor trashing from Hubbard. Otto's alive, and some reporter ought ask him about the Hubbard punching Otto received.

I believe some of the female Sea Org members witnessed Hubbard "collar" Mike Douglas, and ram Mike up against a wall on the Apollo.

There's plenty of the Hubbard orders to overboard people.

Miscavige is not coming clean, and plenty of people who were beaten by Miscavige have told their side, and Miscavige hasn't come clean.

Back in 2005, when the violence story was on the chat sites, I was hoping official Scientology would just take the opportunity and come clean.

Official Scientology needs to let their staff be as free as the ex leaders.

Right now it's only the ex leaders who've admitted to the violence and hazing.

Official Scientologists haven't been able to come clean publicly.

David Miscavige could and should set the example, and come clean himself on his bad behavior hazing and physically abusing his top staff.

Official Scientology could do some genuine good PR for itself, if Miscavige were to just do the right thing.

Chuck Beatty
Chuck Beatty

We need some new news from the Int Base, to find out if the Scientology top ranks staff are still abusing each other or not.

The bottom line, is that this climate of violence is a thing of the top ranks of the Scientology movement.

We need to find out if it has stopped or not.

And we need some new defectors who can say for sure, if it's stopped, or not.

And what type of hazing is going on in 2011, or not.

Victim-blaming is ugly. You don't have to like or approve of someone to acknowledge that they're a victim.

I don't like or approve of Marty Rathbun, but that doesn't matter in this instance. I'm not going to blame him for the disgusting actions of the people trying to make his life a living hell. That's the perpetrators' fault, not Rathbun's.

Biggrizzlybear
Biggrizzlybear

See as much as I pity Rathbun for what he had to put up with from these muppets it's shame that he can't keep that temper completely in check (although in some ways losing it only a few times in that length of time is impressive) as I always thought it would give rise to something like this. There's a couple of clips in there that do come across as petty and needless, like the spitting one.

However nothing can compare with how bad this makes the church look. I mean that video is just dripping with vindictiveness and spite, childlike name calling and a completely warped view of firstly how to treat people and secondly how to treat someone who disagrees with you or speaks against you. All of which is no surprise at all for an organisation that's foundation is built in the mud of a character like Hubbard!

As long as people stay "in" Scientology, either inside or outside of the official "church", their lives will always have some sort of turmoil (big or small) due to the violent doctrine of the founder himself.

That very paranoiac doctrine is what has created the environment whereby a psychopath like Miscavige could rise to the top and continue to perpetrate his criminal and violent activity.

The absolute best thing to do, to have peace in one's life, is to simply walk away from the subject all together. This is something I have not done yet as I am still talking about it and writing on message boards but, I am close -- one day I will get there.

The reactions here, the fighting, the intense emotions, all of it is created by Hubbard's psycho cult. Miscavige is "late on the chain", if you will.

I really have a hard time understanding why people cannot see this.

This is an ironic example of scilon propaganda, right? Not that I like Marty, but....

I am getting sooooo tired of "Golden Era Production" propaganda videos... they suck!I sort of expect propaganda to be a little stupid to begin with, but $cientology goes beyond all my expectations and into the land of the hilarious with this one.

I bet every single step of this video was carefully planned (haha) and executed by baby Miscavige, then viewed sitting in his highchair in his ginormous gold base cinema...when will this cult/religion ever grow-up?

I mean, c'mon, this is their "ingenious" plan to sway the public, this is the end result of 6 months filming Rathbun? I'll bet a million bucks OSA even has a "Operation" codename for this shit. Baawaahaaaa!

While I'd been cult watching for a while, what brought me to Tony and you all was his article about the clean ice man. I could NOT believe that someone would keep such awesome technology from the market. So I would have to say that this bizarre stuff WILL have an impact on the casual observer who happens upon it.

Think about it, Davey. All that money poured into this video that will keep all that money from walking through your doors.

Yeah, what about the "Rathbone" thing? That's suppose to be a taunt, or what? It's like when Republicans intentionally misstate the adjective Democratic as Democrat -- intentionally mispronouncing someone's name is very a schoolyard move. But then, who's going to care? No one outside the world of Scn and Scn watching knows Marty's name anyway.

When Marty was IN "the church," nothing was said about his "deplorable violence."  They accepted violent behavior from Marty and the Maniac Midget. Now that he has left, they point fingers and vilify him.  Go figure.

Does Scientology have any staff left in the top ranks except David Miscavige? Maybe he sits around punching himself in the face.

"....it's shame that he can't keep that temper completely in check........"Because Scientology doesn't work and it doesn't help people. Both factions think they're WINNING (Trademark Charlie Sheen)! They're trying to "out-tech" each other, and, in fact, are just two pigs mud-rasslin'.They all should be arrested. This could not be going better (for Chanology). The two major branches of the "world's most sinister scam" (copyright "Enturbulator 009 aka El Queso All-Stars") doing their utmost to destroy each other.

Waiting for the first fall-out from the Farrakhan/Miscavige unholy alliance. (Its already quite the bone of contention within factions of the "Nation of Islam")Two Satanic mind control cult Ponzi schemes vie for supremacy. Who's zoomin' who? I'm stayin' tuned to find out.Order your popcorn by the train load. This is gonna get good.

BTW the video is awesome!!! Thanks Tony, who needs Netflix????

Its like Reagan and Iran-Contra.He either knew, or he should have.Culpability in either case is roughly equal .If Scientology is so super cool and powerful, how did David Miscavige's high level Scientologist underlings engage in such behavior, and how did he as the "Supreme Roolah" (trademark LRH, RTC, CSI, etc.) allow it, be unaware of it, condone it, not be able to stop it?How? Like OT VII "Rev." Rex Fowler who shot his former partner in the head in cold blood? How could this possibly happen when the tech is applied so correctly? All of them are not only no better than the average wog. They're worse.I'm sure Marty can find an LRH bulletin justifying spitting on people.

I understand a lot of Scientologists were highly put-off by Tommy Davis's "refutation" for this very reason. He didn't seem to realize that it actually looks bad for them that a senior Scientologist could abuse people for years in the compound where the "pope" lives without anyone doing about it.

Miscavige really should outsource video production at this point.  I highly recommend Anonymous Videos.  Most excellent.

I know!  How can you not laugh at these people?  They are their own worst enemies!  But damn, the entertainment value for us Wogs is just through the roof... ;-)

I'm sure they're just doing it because it gives Davey a hard-on.  Can't you just see him, sitting there in his lavish office, watching this and getting all giggly every time the oily-voiced narrator says "Rath-BONE"?

Money and greed will be a big factor when the fall-out comes between Davey and The Nation Of Islam. My bet is on Farrakhan out smarting the dwarf, Alfreddie Johnson becoming "COB" and changing the scilon dress code to mandatory "Bow ties" for all men...yes, even the white devils.

True, a point also raised by Paul Haggis in the New Yorker piece.
