Scientology Cartoon Tops Reddit: We Talk to its Creator, Abbey Neslen, 18

AbbeyNeslen.jpg
A "rage comic" created by an 18-year-old college sophomore in Bozeman, Montana has grabbed the attention of Reddit users tonight.

At more than 100,000 views, the cartoon, titled "What the Church of Scientology did to my family" is a quick success, and has generated more than 900 comments at this point, just a few hours after it was posted by its creator, Abbey Neslen.

After the jump, we'll show you the cartoon, and a short interview we did with Abbey tonight.

AbbeysCartoon.jpg

The cartoon explains itself very well, but some of our readers may not be able to see the image on whatever device they're reading this on. So here's a brief rundown: Abbey describes how much she enjoyed hanging out with her brother, who was 12 years older. But after her brother went away to UCLA, he suddenly stopped communicating with Abbey and her mother. She later heard from her brother's father that her brother had joined the Church of Scientology and would be cutting off all ties to her -- a policy of "disconnection" that we've written about frequently here at the Voice. Eventually, her brother returned to the family, but she describes him as a broken young man, his dreams of one day teaching physics shattered by his time in the church. Now, he works at a kiosk in the local mall.

(The images themselves are common memes at Reddit. It's the story that really counts, and it's the story that is making this a popular item on a night that it's competing with Woody Harrelson being a jackass.)

"Honestly, I'd never made a rage comic before. I'd been a redditor for a while and I really admired the activism that could come from it. When I saw on the front page there was an article about how Scientology had been labelled a business in France, I knew I had to get my story out," Abbey told me by e-mail tonight, referring to yesterday's decision by France's Court of Appeal to uphold Scientology's convictions for fraud there.

Abbey tells me that she's a sophomore at Montana State University majoring in film. We engaged in a little q & a over e-mail...

Is your brother's father still a Scientologist?

I can only assume so. A little bit after my brother moved in with us, he tried contacting me to get back in contact with my brother, but he has since stopped all contact as far as I know.

Have you talked to your brother much about his time in the church? Was he ever on staff or was he just what they call a "public"?

Mostly just explaining to me what Scientology was at all, since I was about 16 at the time and had no idea what it was beyond having heard it thrown around in the media. He was just a public, but I believe his father was involved to a greater extent than he was.

You're about the age that Scientology likes to recruit new members. Thinking about what sorts of ideas or appeals you might be susceptible to, what do you think might have made your brother vulnerable, and why are you different?

I have grown up with a great deal of mistrust for religious organizations, honestly. Growing up my mother faced oppression from the Catholic church for something as trivial as being born left handed. Only when she got away from that could she comes to terms with herself. My brother fell to another of the evils of these organizations wherein they money monger until you are no longer useful to them. By watching all this happen from an 'outside perspective' I feel like I've learned a great deal from what these sorts of people are capable of, and how to avoid it.

My brother's relationship with his father is much different than mine, as well. My brother felt a great deal of need to please his father, I think because he and my mother had divorced and that was always pretty hard on him. I never really knew my father, so I think that factors into it.

It looked like you got some good advice from Reddit users tonight, such as a recommendation to give your brother a copy of Steve Hassan's book Combating Cult Mind Control. You also generated a ton of comments. What are you thinking about how this experience has unfolded?

Yeah, I really appreciated all their great input. I had no idea this was all going to generate so much attention. I have actually begun to read [Hassan's book], someone generously donated a digital copy to me, and it's definitely eye-opening. I would so far recommend this to anyone who's had a similar experience, personally or otherwise.

Just a reminder: L Ron Hubbard created this family-killing disconnection policy that Scientology has never stopped using. What a great man he was.

Abby's Dad (Al Neslen) was the ED of the SLC Organisation of the Church of Scientology in the early 90's.  Ironically Aaron was in the Sea Org who was one of the Ethics officers at the Advanced Organization of Los Angeles (AOLA). This organisation serves OT's in the church, not just your general public starting out on the bridge to freedom.  I guess he needs to go back for retraining in the materials.

THIS is WHY !!!

And it's a good reminder for Anons and Critics alike at a time when we're becoming enthralled by the "Indies VS COB" drama.

As exciting as Debbie, Mike and Marty's efforts might be, we still have a lot of work to do to end the body routing that is going on to this day. I hope to see Anons getting back out there on the streets again.  I want to see all the orgs shuttered, the front groups discontinued, and the end of  all of Hubbard's lies.

What I don't want is a COS Reformation under a Debbie/Mike/Marty Triumvirate,  try to carry on the business of "clearing the planet." I don't want them getting away with passing all the responsibility of all their crimes on Miscavige alone, and trying to carry on a NEW church with an "Everything's fixed noa, OK?" message.

I want Debbie Cook, Mike Rinder, and Marty Rathbun tell the truth, of ALL the crimes of the Church. I want them to spill their knowledge of the killing of Lisa McPherson, and the cover up and dirty tricks afterward.  Of the Sea Org Slaves - those foreigners staffing the Orgs under "Religious Worker Visas" horribly overworked and underpaid, forced to sleep in miserable  conditions.  I want them to tell all, and give up any illusions of a cleaned-up functional Scientology.

I want nothing less than to see Scientology dismantled in every form, and become nothing more than a footnote in history.

Not one Scientologist has the bravery of Abbey Neslen.

She has helped immunize many against the tricks of the dying cult.

She is legend.

Derailing someone from completing college used to be a specialty of $cientology. After all, spending money on college is money that could be spent on brainwashing courses, right?

Since Abbey's father was into it, that adds a more significant dimension but nearly all colleges have students who become disillusioned at some point, sometimes with their friends, their studies, their grades, fear of the future. $cientology was there to help those students find that L. Ron Hubbard's claptrap is the one thing they could trust.

In the past, fellow students would have not known what to say if a college friend said they were taking $cientology courses or thinking of leaving college to pursue it more deeply. Today, I think more students in college, possibly as many as half of them, would warn someone who confided in them about that choice.

There's also a growing dissent not only by ex-members but the families who were torn apart, those left behind when their brother, sister, mother, father or friend went off to join crazy cult.

If $cientology had to pay for shattering dreams and goals, they'd pay billions. Then there are the relationships and lives they destroyed.

Bless your heart Abby!  What a  compassionate & bright young lady you are!  Way to go getting your brother back from a vicious, evil & militant cult.  I hope he regains his spiritual strength  and lives a happy, joyful and prosperous life.

And to, scientology, your crimes are apparent for all the world to see!  Your days are numbered as the internet will be your final downfall.

Oh, one last thing:  Way to go, France!  Viva La France!

Abbey, please go on the International Cultic Studies Association web-site.  There are listings there for all types of support and information to help your family and you cope with what you are dealing with, now that your brother is out and creating a life for himself.  There is an ex'es support group and family members support group, as well.

I think that you will find you are far from being alone in your experience and there will be people in Montana who have been through what you are going through and will be there for you.  With the Internet and the netizens working hard on issues around Scientology, your family and will be able to find support.

Hang in there.

Every single instance of Scientology splitting apart a family like this is too many, but unfortunately similar stories are just far too common. While it's good that her brother is out, it's obvious what the Cult of Scientology can do to someone. Paranoia, pressure and years of being told that everything bad around you is your fault takes its toll on someone, before we even get into the drills and shouting at ashtrays. I wish Abbey and family all the best and hope her brother starts being more like himself again.

Disconnection of families is one of the many reasons that protests continue worldwide. This month there are protests against the cult in at least 21 cities across 9 countries. Come and join us, for families like Abbey's.

(HUGS) to you, Abbey, I think your brother is going to be alright. I don't think his wife is a scientologist. Get in contact with them in a more personal way, especially since he might become upset that you 'aired the family laundry' on the internet.

Up until now there have been four great comic book versions of Scientology.

The Fantastic Four fight Xemu. the Merciless, Master of the Fifth Dimension. Really, no kidding. It is there. Check it out.

Next E-man fights a red haired clown called, "The Psychobabbler". Introduction by a cartoon Albert Einstein who prefaces the story while reading something an awful lot like Dianetics.

John Close in DC's Wasteland tells the personal story of being hypnotized by L.Ron and being there when he decides to turn Dianetics into a religion.

The greatest is Donald Duck. He wears a sailor suit, gets paid thirty cents an hour and gets ordered around by a cranky, rich, old man. Can there be any doubt?

Well, now we have a fifth. Congratulations Abbey. And though popularity is no gauge of quality, your story has been seen by more people than the first three stories I mention, all combined.

Why the internet will ultimately result in the demise of cults like scientology:  from grantsvirus: "I feel you. In 1971, years before I was born, my aunt Susan Meister was killed while on Hubbard's boat. Sickening, seems to have ruined my whole family."

That the story of a young girl who inexplicably died from a bullet wound to the center of her forehead 40 years ago on LRH's flagship can suddenly come back to life in a personal and visceral way on a social news website in response to another person's story of the cult's destruction of her family is quite instructive of what the internet can do.  It's the wack-a-mole game in the very best carny tradition with the CoS playing the part of the rube who always loses, no matter how much he antes up.

I posted this on facebook but thought it worth cross posting here:

now that $cientology's hit rage comics [in a big way] it's obvious that their potential source of future revenue has been dealt a huge blow.... which is nice.... I wonder if they'll try and track her brother down and "bring him back" to stop the press getting a hold of him..... something to think about, maybe

Abbey's brother, Aaron has a Facebook page which links to his father, Alfred, and rest of his family. Aaron is married & lists his employer on his FB page. His father, Alfred, was listed on the cult's Honor Roll in 2003; nothing after that. Aaron's last course in the cult was in 2002, so he's been out of the cult for awhile. Perhaps his kiosk job has more to do with the lack of jobs in Montana due to our sad economy right now.  It doesn't take away the sad fact that the corrupt cult continues to see people as dispensable objects with fat wallets to toss out when the money well runs dry.

There's moderate Muslims attending moderate mosques that reject Islamism and the political and personal lifestyle domination fundamental Islam entails so why can't the world accept moderate Scientologists that reject the radical Scientologism? Sea Orgism? sect of DM?

Just because prophet Mohammed and a number of the successor caliphs were war mongering slavers doesn't mean all Muslims support that dogma today anymore than all Scientologists have to follow the dogma of the prophet LRH and his successor DM (also war-mongering slavers.)

Once again, an excellent post!  Colleges are, in fact, one of the main institutions this cults goes to recruit.  I remember back in the 70s how many new members were students who eventually dropped out of wog education to become brainwashed Ronbots.  But the 70s are ancient  as far as this cult goes.  With the advent of the internet, the game has changed remarkably.  There are probably just 40,000 members left and even that number is dropping precipitously.

Nice work, MarkStark.

Sandy4077, I remember hearing your aunt's story.  I read a letter that Susan had sent to her family saying she was, "EXPANDING, EXPANDING, EXPANDING!"  She told them to get involved ASAP as it was "more precious than gold!"

Honestly not much will come of this. Aaron's father will probably be put under some ethics condition and will most likely have limited access to Scientology's bridge until he can "handle" the situation. Basically lots of grovelling, trying to handle his kids- at the least getting them to sign a "will not attack the church or go to the media ever again" gag order, donating as much money as he can and then maybe he'll be accepted back into the group but I think this is unlikely. So basically he'll be a sub-Scientologist declared PTS (potential trouble source - someone connected to an SP - they'll probably blame the mother and also label the kids PTS to her too all due to this media fallout) and will be in perpetual propitiation to Scientology. Nice life to look forward to.

Yes....but... additional facts: The brother is shown on FB as being the manager of Cell Fashions since 2009. He's happily married to a woman who seems to have no connection to Scientology at all. They play pool in the national leagues and she works with developmentally disabled adults. She loves her job and seems like a kind and loving person. This is good for Aaron. The father has only 2 people on his friend list bit one of them is Bill Good. That's not a good thing ( no pun intended)

Abbey has created a storm here, whether she knows it or not. I hope her brother doesn't feel compelled to disconnect from her because of what she did. Perhaps she should just contact her father via Aaron's FB and give him a piece of her mind, since it's clear there has been a lack of communication between them for a long time. This could be the straw that broke the camel's back.

Independent Scientologists are currently bragging about putting 10 year old kids on the cans. So, no, I'm not going to stop fighting to exposing the harm of Scientology.

I will reserve judgement on the "moderate" practice of Scientology.  It seems improbable to me that one could "casually" practice Scientology.  It was not designed to be a "moderate" practice, it was designed to be an aggressive growth industry.

I believe that Scientology is harmful in all forms. It is harmful because it is a made-up fantasy that takes over a person's psyche, trapping them in a state of madness. It was designed to plunge the Scientologist into a state of isolation from society, creating a dichotomy of Scientologists vs "the wogs."It is a hoax perpetrated on Humanity by L Ron Hubbard, a psychopath who concocted a fraud, using a few pop-psychology parlor tricks to gain the confidence of his marks.

The source of all the problems with Scientology is the liar, con-man and megalomaniac L Ron Hubbard. Miscavige is just a symptom of the disease.

As long as children are in danger of being body routed into taking a Stress Test to "find their ruin," then I will continue to fight to expose the cult.
