Whitney Houston Mourned; P.S. 87 Aide Arrested In Sexual Abuse Case Arraigned; NYU Expansion Protested
As we noted last night, singer Whitney Houston died yesterday at the age of 48. She was found dead of unknown causes in her hotel room at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. Beverly Hills police Lt. Mark Rosen told the Associated Press that "there were no obvious signs of any criminal intent." The death of the woman with the unbelievable voice also rattled our area. Last night, the Apollo in Harlem saw mourning and memorials. The New Hope Baptist Church in Newark, where Houston sang as a child, remembered Houston in a small early morning memorial service. A teacher's aide at P.S. 87 on the Upper West Side was arraigned Saturday after being arrested Friday for molesting a student. 56-year-old Gregory Atkins was charged with "an attempted criminal sex act, sexual abuse, and endangering the welfare of a child." [NYT, NY1]

Raynel Green and Raymond Moore, the men charged with stealing a Department of Environmental Protection truck, they drove erratically through the Upper East Side, hitting four vehicles before crashing into an barber shop Friday. The men were high on PCP and marijuana, according to New York Post. Green and Moore were charged Saturday with grand larceny and criminal possession of stolen property. [NYP, NY1]
