Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz Wants Brownsville to Be the Next Tech Mecca

The Brooklyn State of the Borough address is tonight, and Borough President Marty Markowitz is expected to announce a contest to attract tech manufacturers to Brownsville and East New York.

Markowitz said he targeted these neighborhoods because of their high unemployment rates and the ready availability of land to build such a facility. Indeed, Brownsville has the highest concentration of New York City Housing Authority projects in the city.

From the NY Daily News:

"Just like the Mayor had a competition for Roosevelt Island, I'm suggesting another competition to create a high-tech manufacturing zone," said Markowitz, who will announce the push in his State of the Borough address Wednesday night. "We desperately need manufacturing jobs."

Unfortunately for Markowitz, the plan seems unrealistic. It's easy to get people excited about Cornell's new university outpost on Roosevelt Island because the campus will be shiny and the research will be high profile -- a manufacturing plant, by contrast, is not quite so glamorous. Furthermore, most companies nowadays choose to make their products overseas to avoid U.S. labor laws.

Not to mention -- have you been to East New York lately?
