Christine Quinn, Activists Address The Stonewall Inn After Prop 8 Ruling

Marriage equality supporters gather outside of the Stonewall Inn tonight to hail the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals ruling that California's Proposition 8 is unconstitutional. There were many of the same people present who were at a rally the first time a federal court ruled the California voter referendum banning same-sex marriage back in August of 2010: Marriage Equality New York board president Cathy Merino-Thomas, Queer Rising's Jake Goodman, attorney Yetta Kurland, and City Council Speaker Christine Quinn (above). Even Joe My God came out!

There were about 50 supporters outside the Stonewall Inn, far fewer than in Foley Square a year and a half ago. Still, it was a fair amount for a February night, and also quite a turnout considering how many times people have had to come out for equality as rulings come down again and again and again. Incoming Marriage Equality US Executive Director Brian Silva used the opportunity to not only shake New Yorkers up into looking beyond the gains in the Empire State, but to get them to help keep pushing in California and phone bank in New Hampshire, where marriage equality exists under an imminent threat.

Earlier, we spoke with Metro Weekly's Chris Geidner about the legality behind the ruling. On Wednesday evening, we'll be a guest (along with Merino-Thomas) on Yetta Kurland Live at 10:00 PM EST on WWRL.

Thank you New Yorkers for celebrating our victory out here in California. NY and CA are leading the way for equality for everyone everywhere, and I for one am very proud of all my brothers and sisters who live this fight every day and will continue to do battle until the forces of hate go back into their churches and shut up for good.
