New Yorkers Think Ray Kelly Is a Great Guy, Like to Shame One Another Publicly: Poll

New Yorkers think that Ray Kelly is just swell and really like to embarrass one another, according to a new poll.

Indeed, the stats suggest that many city-dwellers are a strange bunch.

Even though Kelly appeared in an Islamophobic vid used for cop training, most New Yorkers don't think the NYPD is anti-Muslim, according to a Quinnipiac University Polling Institute Survey.

Sixty percent say that the police have acted "appropriately" in dealing with Muslims.

Satisfaction with law enforcement's treatment of Muslims does vary somewhat depending upon race -- 70 percent of white voters say cops have acted appropriately, while 60 percent of Hispanics and only 48 percent of blacks say the same thing.

Overall, 71 percent of the 1,222 voters polled think that the NYPD has done a good job fighting terrorism and 62 percent like Kelly's performance overall.

"Despite a wave of criticism and calls for his resignation, support for Police Commissioner Ray Kelly remains strong," says Maurice Carroll, who runs the Institute. "New Yorkers say cops are doing a good job, especially fighting terrorism, and reject 2-1 the claim that cops pick on Muslims."

Quinnipiac also reports that 60 percent of city residents support sanitation stickers -- the very obvious, gummy graphics that get stuck on street-sweeper blocking cars.

"Those sticky hard-to-scrape-off-the-windshield 'Scarlet Letters' meant to shame the owners of cars blocking the street-sweeper? Keep 'em, most New Yorkers say," Carroll says. "Even voters who park on the street and do the Alternate Side Parking dance are stuck on the stickers by a wide margin."
