Romney Wins Florida Primary, but GOP Resists

Despite the fact that Mitt Romney won the Florida primary in a landslide, many Republicans continue to pretend that he will not be their eventual, inevitable presidential nominee.

Romney won the Florida primary with 46.4 percent of the state's Republican vote, compared to Newt Gingrich's 31.9 percent. Rick Santorum and Ron Paul trailed distantly with 13.4 and 7 percent, respectively.

This comes as no surprise, as entry polls clearly showed Romney beating his rivals in the Florida race. Many political pundits have said that the Florida primary is key in determining which competitor will eventually take the nomination.

Despite this consensus, Newt Gingrich insists that Republican voters shouldn't yet count him out of the race. "We are going to contest every place and we are going to win and we will be in Tampa as the nominee in August," he said.

Many Republicans acknowledge the difficulties that a Mormon nominee would present to the nomination, which has in the past only featured Christians. Romney also has an extensive history of adopting liberal causes when it serves him well politically. However, it's likely that no other nominee would be able to challenge Obama effectively. Gingrich is too polarizing due to his history as Speaker of the House, and Ron Paul is, quite simply, too out there for the traditional Republican party.

From here, the Republican primary race will head to Nevada, where another vote will occur.
