Neo-Nazis in Greenpoint: Hipster Hoax?

Picture 54.png
The Daily News wants to know: Are there neo-Nazis in Greenpoint?

The question comes about after a series of pics taken by Brooklyn photog Adam Krause apparently hit the web Monday evening, in which he chronicled five self-professed Polish neo-Nazis. Gawker seems to have broken the story, and did disclose that Klause is "a friend." The news site treated the scoop as true.

The Daily Mail quickly picked up Krause's saga, prompting him and his subjects to become the object of international attention.

The Daily News' Alexander Nazaryan wrote that the photos have caused outcry and demands for explanation.

People have become angry and skeptical. Some doubt whether the photos are real, while others are shocked that neo-Nazism would be present in the multi-ethnic community. A local news station is reporting that area residents and politicians were so outraged that cops had been put on alert in case of trouble. They also reported that Krause decided to pull the photos from his website, saying that he wanted to keep a "low profile."

It looks like Krause did in fact remove the photos from his website, and is directing traffic to a Larry David video on skinheads instead, writing: "While I appreciate the attention this story is receiving, the media exposure it is getting is making me a bit uncomfortable. In the meantime, I feel this video answers a lot of questions that we are all asking."

Runnin' Scared put in a call to Krause to see what's up. We'll update if we hear back. But if you know anything about the pics -- or about the neo-Nazis said to be in Greenpoint -- drop us a line.

there are polish neo nazis in greenpoint. i didn't say there are five hundred but there are some. if you knew anything about the punk and skinhead subcultures and grew up in nyc you'd probably know this. apparently there are polish nazi skins in long island as well according to a story i heard about a particular 'incident' last year. anyone with a brain realizes that this does not mean that all polish people or all polish punks or skinheads are nazis. there are even a couple of bands i could name that are part of the white nationalist music scene that i associate with polish nazis in nyc but i won't mention the names as i don't want to publicize them but one claims to play 'new york hardcore' and the other plays what is known as 'national socialist black metal.' i think they have overlapping band members and i don't know if they still play. there also used the be a place in greenpoint called 'the white house' which even made it into a news clip when skinheads became a hot media story in america about 20 years ago for a good five minutes, but i don't know if any of those nazi skinheads were ethnically polish. they certainly were scumbags, however.

What a BS! Adam Krause needed some fame and notoriety as an unfulfilled artist (it is the first time people have heard about him!) so he decided to vilify the Polish community, which has been the scapegoat for a certain influential ethnic group since WWII, according to the rule: "I don't care what they say about me, as long as they're talking about me". It is easy to vilify, but harder to prove what you wrote (sorry, but the pictures are no proof). Polish journalists have called him to talk about it several times, but the moment he heard who called he hung up on them and later did not answer at all. Coward! I am Polish and I have been living here for quite a while. I have never seen a single Neo-Nazi. Have some common sense! Immigrants!?

'a certain influential ethnic group?' i think the tone of what you write clearly says a lot about you. what you really meant to say is 'who is this fucking jew talking shit about my polish people' but i said it for you. again, just because you too don't like it doesn't mean it isn't true. you have never seen a neo but i really don't think you would know one if you saw one like most people wouldn't. most neos don't exactly have 'white power' tattooed on their foreheads.

There are Neo-Nazis in Greenpoint. From time to time when you walk outside you can see them, especially during the winter time they walk in groups of 5 - 10 people. If you think that there are no NN you are greatly mistaken. Just walk outside and you can see Polish youth with shaved heads and neonazi motives on their clothes.

have contacted Adam Krause numerous times about this issue. As have other people. There is no response as to who these men in the pictures are. These pictures were actually taken in 2009, but removed from the site where they were taken. So they are not up to date. Two out of six of the pictures have Nazi symbols in them. " The swastika studs were nearly sold out at The Bejewelled shop, with only one pair left. ‘It’s totally outrageous,’ City Councilman Steve Levin told the New York Daily News." (I Called and they do not even have Swastika studs). A Facebook group called Greenpoint Antifa was founded by activists in the neighbourhood who serve as vigilantes against what they say is ‘fascist, violent’ conditions. (There are three members of this group and have been no recent posts...) Also, they are no longer accepting comments on this article - that was of 2/29. It is an obvious slander. Thank you. I understand the concern.

I live in Greenpoint and have seen these kids walking around - not exactly covered with swastikas but wearing fatigues and white laces in their boots. I assumed it was a teenage thing to shock grown-ups, not unlike juggalos, since I've seen them but never seen them messing with people.

As a Polish American I condemn Nazis who ever they are and where ever they are.  The Polish Community in Greenpoint will probably get to the bottom of these photos.  It is a tight knit community. As of now, it seems that someone is identifying one of the boys, but the picture is of him ten years ago, so something is not right.  The pictures do look staged and four of them have no Nazi symbols ......I do also note that the author of the article, Daniel Gold, writes this in his article - "myfamily doesn't have a history of the warmest relations with the Polish people".  I think this makes him at least slightly biased, regardless of the reason.  Are we now going to blindly take his word and jump to conclusions? If these are "Polish Nazis", shouldn't we be marginalizing them instead of giving them their five minutes of fame?  I know a lot of people who are more deserving of  media attention, like the Polish Righteous!

If it is true these people are morons. The Nazis hated the Poles. They viewed all Slavic peoples as sub-human.

I live in Greenpoint and I know a great number of young Polish kids, trust me there is no way they would allow a nazi to walk among them. After all that their country suffered from the Germans and the Russians they are very sensitive about the subject they always mention it in conversations about their homeland. It's just sad that someone would produce such a hoax and stick it right into their hearths. It's like saying that there are Jewish nazis in Williamsburg- it doesn't make sense. It's unbelievable what people would do to get some publicity. I am sticking with the Polish people on this one, they work hard to rebuild their image after years of communism and they don't deserve to be treated like that.

no offense but you clearly don't have any basis for saying this can't be true except you think someone is slandering polish people and this upsets you. poland like russia is full of neo nazi skinheads that are ultra nationalist and violently anti-immigrant and anti-semitic. there are also anti-fascist skinheads in both countries. it is nothing at all like saying there are jewish nazis in williamsburg which is absurd even if the guy below wants to point to that old news story about neo nazis in israel which was a bizarre anomaly if you read the facts that came out about that story. i know people who have spoken to the photographer on the phone about the photos and just because you don't like it doesn't make it not true.

Greg I understand what you're saying and in a perfect world, there wouldn't be any neo nazis....but there are. There are neo nazis right here in Brooklyn, the one who lives on my block isn't Polish but his sig-heil buddy is. I've heard unbelievably offensive & anti-Semitic comments out of the mouths of Polish immigrants in greenpoint, sad but true. And then there are these incidents.http://www.huffingtonpost.com/...

I wouldn't believe much from it. From what was said, those photos were staged and taken 3-4 years ago for some project.
