Census Concerns Continue as Queens Grows
Last week, the Voice reported on the U.S. Census Bureau's ruling that New York is not as big as Mayor Mike Bloomberg says. 
The Census claims that the city's population is 8,175,133, but the city's Department of Planning has countered that the population is closer to 8.4 million as of July 2010.
The discrepancy has become particularly polemic in Queens.
Borough pols, according to the Daily News, point to stats showing that Queens is growing despite a "lackluster showing" in the 2010 count.
Last year, Census info suggested that the area grew by 1,343 people between 2000 and 2010. Now, though, the Census says that Queens swelled by 17,126 people from April 2010 to July 2011 -- to a total of 2,247,848.
Officials are happy that these numbers better reflect the City's growth estimates, but still wish the Census would put New York's population closer to 8.4 million. Census results are used to allot federal money to municipalities, and to organize legislative districts.
