Black Bloc And Bottles Led NYPD To Close Tompkins Square Last Night

blackbloc.jpg
The heat must be getting to a few peoples' heads. At around 9pm last night, a loose pack of around 50 to 60 protestors took to the streets, looting and vandalizing storefronts and property in the East Village. Their targets: the windows of the Starbucks on Astor and the newly opened 7/11 on St. Mark's.

Glass bottles were thrown at the sites while chants of 'NYPD! Go to hell!' rang out through the night. As the group headed back towards Alphabet City, the night culminated in the closing of Tompkins Square Park, where the group supposedly was congregating.

An hour later, in front of the Sixth Street Community Center, where an after party for the Anarchist Book Fair was being held, two men were arrested for throwing bottles. After reports of rowdiness, the NYPD shut down the entire block (East Sixth Street between Avenue B & C) but it has been confirmed that they were not attendees of the party and the events from earlier were unrelated.

Using a tactic known as a 'black bloc,' the cavalcade that ran through the East Village dressed in all-black gear as a way to conceal their identity, promote solidarity and hide in the throngs of Saturday night party-goers if need be. This could explain why there were no reports of any of them getting caught.

At first, reports brought up a possible link between the black bloc and Occupy, members of whom had already been attending major protests throughout the day and a march at Washington Square that started around 7pm. But the coincidence was soon found to be false.

The night's events, according to a city anarchist legal worker named @mcompost, were part of a "very loosely organized anti-police protest" - the basic description of any black bloc protest - or an "NYC FTP" protest This explains the sporadic nature and distance between the locations of the attacks.

Along with the fates of the two men arrested, the cost of the damage wreaked on 7/11, which is already a designated target of criticism, and Starbucks has still yet to be seen. Needless to say, the neighborhood had a rough Saturday night.

HOLD IT- listen again to what I said… On the solidarity with labor day AFTER all the rallies and marches were OVER. I was on Church Street at like 5:50 PM I had just mailed a package at the POThere..a large group of “anarchists” complete with black and red flags came up out of the Chambers Street station. THEY HAD TO ASK PASSERBYS WHICH WAY WAS ZUCCOTTI PARK!!! Since I was going to Zuccotti I observed them go to Zuccotti THEN insert themselves between the police and real OWS people begin to throw objects and shove police…I DIRECTLY WITNESSED ALL OF THIS…So of course, the major Press outlets all promptly reported “there were many arrests at the OWS demonstrations” SURE…this is the SAME SCAM used in Genoa, Toronto and Pittsburgh. Anyone who thinks That these tactics which have occurred again and again and again aren’t the product some rogue Govt agency or much worse, some elite NGO isn’t thinking. You can be sure some Grottlesex type knows exactly what is happening and is running this operation. JeffreyJSmith.NewYork@usa.com

Maybe we should start policing ourselves? If we can't rely on police officers to keep us safe, and indeed, the biggest threat to our safety seems to come from the cops, why don't *WE* work together? Catch these thugs and hold them down to get a picture of them. Don't be tempted to get in any licks or anything foolish, but get their picture and post it.

If they're going to ruin our chances at free speech by acting like thugs, then they should be held accountable.

As I understand, plainclothes police infiltrated a peaceful afterparty, pushed and dragged several people + clearly went after 2 guys (one a lawyer), who had "outed" one of the plainclothes guys and gotten him to leave a march earlier that day (also peaceful), and then lied about attacks and "bottles being thrown." They weren't. The police did, however, blockade sixth street.

These are "intimidation techniques," clearly meant to discourage activists.

I was there last night

I wish i lived in NYC during this period.....but anyway,....things still go on out in the hinterelands....nevermind this nebulous article.  Here's Scott Olsen in Denver last wednesday on part of a 25 city tour partly promoting the upcoming May Day strikes.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v...

This is EXACTLY how any establishment tries to shut down any legitimate commentOn what is occurring in any society. It’s ALWAYS the same some previously little or totally Unknown group “appears” engaging in violent actions and the establishment uses the new group’sActions as legal grounds to restrict rights. This is exactly what happened in Genoa, Exactly what happened in Toronto a previously unknown group of “anarchists” showed up threw some bottles and the city of Toronto began sending out Blackwater style “private Security” who would jump out of vans Miles from downtown and the G-20 meetings and snatch anyone they suspected as being a protestor and take them to that former film studio. In Pittsburgh a group of “anarchists” showed up at the G-20 with violent demonstrations prompting police to sweeps of neighborhoods 5 miles from the downtown ordering people to get in their houses. Anyone who didn’t move quickly enough got sound cannoned…including six year old kids or arrested. At OWS during the labor solidarity day after all the major demonstrations were long over I watched as a group of “anarchists” come up out of the Chambers St subway on Church street. They had to be told by passersby’s which direction Zuccotti park was(!) This was at like 6:30PM   I followed them down to Wall Street where they inserted themselves between real OWS marchers and the police and began to throw anything they could find and shove police. So arrests were made. This was a group which was in no visible way connected with OWS or the earlier legitimate demonstrations of the day. But NOW the media promptly reports that there were “many arrests at the OWS demonstration today” See how it works?  These “anarchist” groups have been found time and again to be parts of rogue law enforcement units or rogue parts of intelligence agencies. A thirty second search of the net shows how much evidence there is of theseViolent groups being under government or, worse, some elite NGO’s direction.     JeffreyJSmith.NewYork@usa.com

That was a disgrace last night. And you can bet those people have been part of OWS. The NYPD should ban OWS after last night. Deport them to New Jersey, so we can keep an eye on them.

Occupy has been trying to do that all along, and it hasn't helped, mostly because few  want to be responsible for anything, or admit that the people using violence could be part of the movement. In fact, how many videos have you seen where they showed the police "oppressing" protestors without showing what provoked the response in the first place, like the UC Davis incident, where the "peaceful protestors" were actively obstructing and threatening police who were actively trying to leave them alone?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v...

There's nothing about being in OWS that precludes acting like a jerk.

You ever put your damn hands on me or my mask, you'll learn that smashing windows isn't violence but how we deal with snitch bitches is.  It's dumbass armchair liberals like yourself who think the rest of the movement is so dumb that a couple of cops show up and 50 people just follow them in a surprisingly well-coordinated action.

Get a clue.

That's right, violent protesters are bad because violence is bad so let's use violence to quell the violent protesters and show how good us non violent protesters are.

You're spreading misinformation. This is a tactic that governments have used, but it isn't always, or even usually, the case.

So start dealing with them.  See my post above.

Need to be smarter and use the same tactics as the secret service, using different insignia pins to show you are a member of the group, if (X) user does not have proper pin of the day, he/ she is the enemy and should not be trusted. Understandably this takes time and planning, but in the end is needed to root out traitors.

Yes, because the police have the power to take away first amendment rights by banning ongoing protest.  Go back to the 50s, fascist.

"Snitch bitches"? Seriously? Seriously??? Maybe if you didn't act like a thug in the first place, people would want to report you or turn you in? I was suggesting that people hold these thugs down and take their picture to expose dirty cops and agent provocateurs. Yet here you are, fulfilling every single expectation the "establishment" has regarding vicious, violent anarchists who just want to watch the world burn.

Please. You talk about conspiracies when you're just a thug.

Who said anything about using violence?

"Everything I don't like is a conspiracy designed to get me because I'm super-important!  Also, other people agree that I'm the center of the universe.  And if they don't, it just proves how real the conspiracy is!"

The person who points out that you don't understand what nonviolence means is a cop.  The person who points out that you don't understand what violence means is a cop.

They're coming to take me away, ha ha!!

If forcing someone to go to a cage for a number of years isn't violence then let's open the dialog of kidnapping the police, nonviolently of course.
