The Feeding Tube Diet: America's Latest Excess

booquet.jpg
OK, so we had hoped that by ignoring the whole "feeding tube diet" trend that it might just go away. We had wanted to think that people are above sticking plastic piping in their nasal cavity -- the way comatose people get fed -- to slim down for cosmetic reasons.

Alas, people are not above this: The feeding tube diet is apparently a thing, and might be getting more popular among one of the most annoying groups of people in this country -- weight-obsessed brides to be.

The New York Times reports:

"Something medical is indeed happening in the newest diet to reach the United States. Dr. Oliver R. Di Pietro has been offering what he calls a K-E diet at his modest clinic in Bay Harbor Islands, Fla., since last July.

It uses a nasogastric tube (a tube that goes through the nose and down the esophagus into the stomach) to provide all nourishment, with no carbohydrates, for 10 days. Dr. Di Pietro said body weight is lost quickly through ketosis, the state in which the body burns fat rather than sugar. Patients at his office are monitored during the 10-day period for things like constipation, bad breath and dizziness."

Gross.

Anyway, this diet runs around $1500. Some of the risks, as detailed by CBS, are "very dangerous" and "can perforate the patient internally and cause infections."

Ok, we get that ladies want to shape up before their weddings. Fine. But doing something so risky just to look better in a dress that you will wear for six hours, max, is dumb. And any prospective partner, man or woman, who supports such drastic measures is a total douchebag -- and probably not worth marrying in the first place.

When I used to get samples from sites like "Official Samples" I would spend about $120 a week I thought that was good because I always shopped at Safeway and my receipt said I had saved 18 percent.
