Angel Gurity, who fled to the Dominican Republic to avoid a murder charge 19 years ago, was charged yesterday here in the fatal stabbing of his then-24-year-old girlfriend Altagracia Valdez in March, 1993.

Gurity, who was ordered held without bail, was indicted in 2010 based on DNA evidence, but it took authorities two years to win his extradition from the DR.

Valdez was discovered by police officers responding to a domestic violence call in a Bronx apartment building. Her body was semi-nude and had allegedly been sexually assaulted. Her 7-month-old son was found unharmed in an adjacent room.

Investigators took a sexual assault swab at the scene, but it took years for DNA technology to catch up to the point where a profile could be developed of the suspect, prosecutors said. Five years ago, city pathologists were able to work up that profile and link Gurity to the murder. The NYPD Cold Case Squad reopened the case, and detectives Mark Tebbins and Anthony Padilla traced the suspect to the DR.
