At Last! North Carolina Becomes Final Southern State to Constitutionally Ban Gay Marriage!

Confederate.png
North Carolina made history today. Not only did voters approve a constitutional ban on same-sex marriage, but they made the Southern States of Bigotry set complete, in becoming the last holdout state south of the Mason-Dixon to do so!

But wait -- it gets better! North Carolina didn't just stop at banning same-sex marriages. Read the text of Senate Bill 514, also know as Amendment 1:

"Marriage between one man and one woman is the only domestic legal union that shall be valid or recognized in this State. This section does not prohibit a private party from entering into contracts with another private party; nor does this section prohibit courts from adjudicating the rights of private parties pursuant to such contracts."

That means no gay marriages...nor civil unions...nor domestic partnerships.

All sarcasm aside, it's an extremely sad night for all families in North Carolina. It's not just families headed by or including lesbian, gay or bisexual members who will be hurt. A real blow has been dealt to their legal options for protection and support, it's true. But all North Carolinians -- in living with a constitution which legalizes discrimination, and which creates two sets of rights for two sets of citizens -- are hurt in the cycle of a false notion of superiority and inferiority. Pro-equality Fortune 500 companies will be less likely to settle there, hurting the economic options for totally gay and totally straight North Carolinians alike. And they'll be hurt for at least a generation, if not generations, with this constitutional amendment.

North Carolina joins a majority of all states, and every single southern state, in adopting such a ban, though its is among the most draconian.

At one point President Obama was reportedly scheduled to appear in North Carolina today. After his Vice President made Obama's bizarre position on same-sex marriage equality seem all the more absurd this Sunday, it ended up Obama was instead in New York State...with the Governor who has done more for marriage equality than any other.

And while we realize the politics of New York State don't extrapolate across the nation, the fact that Governor Andrew Cuomo is polling at 73% also makes Obama's apparent fears that supporting same-sex marriage will hurt him look all the more ridiculous.

UPDATE: The vote wasn't even close. North Carolina passed Amendment 1 by more than 60 percent. Also, Colorado failed to pass a civil union bill late last night, after procedural moves ran the legislative clock out prior to an important deadline. A terrible day for same-sex couples seeking legal equality across the nation.

At last! North carolina gets away with institutionalized bigotry and bigger government! At last, no gay people will bring vacation dollars there any more! At last, it will get overturned as unconstitutional!

Now we'll see what happens to tourism, conventions and new businesses.  I vacationed there years ago and was furious over the racism displayed by people there.  I will never visit the state again. The past is still the present there and it is part of this nation's history that I am ashamed of.

How come the media didn't cover that massive black church rally at the capital? Thousands of blacks gathered to sing "we shall overcome" in support of denying gays equal civil rights.

whatever happend to good morals that this country was founded on... read your history... get some help... gay marriage can't even exist... the only reason why do you want it getting married is for tax breaks and other benefits that families have they shouldnt even have kids because they're messed up in the ... think I'm a christian well you're wrong I'm an atheist... Just think of natural selection homosexuality is a genetic defect that will weed itself out...

Its sad but all down the line NC is about to lose a lot of dollars and jobs because of this. It will, ironically enough, hurt straight families there the most in the long run but do unto others and all that, I suppose.

Can we sell the entire state to the Russians?

What did you expect? We are talking about a State that made "Grits"  the Official State Meal.Half the member's of the State Assembly cannot read or write and the other half want to surrender to General Grant  and get back in the Union.

NC is the 31st state to pass such an amendment. Are you going to boycott the other 30 states too? Everywhere such an amendment has come up for popular vote it has passed. Perhaps you should boycott the entire country.

A 1999 review by researcher Bruce Bagemihl shows that homosexual behavior has been observed in close to 1,500 species, ranging from primates to gut worms, and is well documented for 500 of them.[1][2]

The majority of states have passed similar amendments. Is there any evidence of those states suffering financially?

What? No snarky remarks about missing teeth and marrying cousins?

This is part of the problem. Insulting the population of the entire state might make you feel superior but it won't solve anything.

Hey now, there's no need to drag grits in to this.

tax breaks arent what gays want. Its mainly the right to visit your spouse in the hospital and make decisions based on severity of illness or injury. Also, since its republicans who lower them to less than 2nd clas citizenry, it is doubtful republicans have earned their vote.
