Chen Guangcheng Will Become a New Yorker in a Few Hours

guangcheng.jpg
Beijing might have us beat in regards to population and the Olympics opening ceremony but there's no place like New York. And the blind Chinese activist Chen Guangcheng will soon discover that.

This morning, the controversial figure who has given American diplomats a few headaches in past weeks boarded a plane leaving Beijing and landing at Newark International some time this evening. The State Department confirmed the news soon after a three-week passport process that ironed out the kinks of the ambassadorial deal was completed.

Once he arrives in the tri-state area, Guangcheng will enter the ranks of academia at NYU Law's US-Asia Law Institute as a visiting scholar. Professor Jerome Cohen, the co-head of the Institute, has been in contact with the Chinese national since rumors of the exchange began and, even two weeks ago, he said, "When he gets those updates [on his passport], he'll be on a plane immediately."

Looks like that day has finally come. Welcome to the Big Apple.
For anyone who doesn't know the background story of Guangcheng (but, with the media spotlight on him, that's almost impossible), here is a quick summary:

In 2006, Guangcheng, a self-taught lawyer, filed a class-action lawsuit on behalf of thousands of women in his region. The reason: the Chinese government had been reportedly forcing the women into abortions and sterilization. Instead of responding to the accusation, the Communist Party detained the blind man for four years and cut off all his communications with the outside world.

Then, in 2010, he was released but put under serious house arrest. The Chinese government kept a close eye on his house and fended off fellow activists and supporters from visiting him. Surprisingly, last week after 19 months under house arrest, Guangcheng escaped from his house in the middle of the night and sought political asylum at the American embassy.

At first, the activist wanted to reclaim his and his family's freedoms in China but that deal soon unraveled. Soon after, he decided, through tense negotiations between the American and Chinese governments and with Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's approval, to leave the country for good and further his legal knowledge at that little school in downtown Manhattan.

And that's where we find ourselves today. Every New Yorker has a story.

He's blind, penniless, and will never see his mother again. Now, quit bitching, and get over to the airport to welcome him. Doomed..? You sound like the inspiration for www.WeDefault.org

DEPORT THE GOP ESTABLISHMENT, says Ann Coulterhttp://trenchpress.com/?p=1171...Coulter: "Our immigration officials said, WELCOME, ZAZI!… Oops, sorry Swedish scientists and nuclear engineers — no room for you."

“Couldn’t we just tell that blind Chinese dissident that he’s in America now?”

Yeah, "No place like New York", provided you aren't homeless.  I dont suppose he would last long in a New York jail after the police arrested him for sleeping in the subway. Lucky for him he  is famous.

We have a lot of problems in the USA with war mongers, bankers, and oil thieves controlling the government and ruining the economy. We can barely deal with our own homeless citizens, much less anyone else. I sometimes considered English Loyalism as perhaps the real reaction to American politics. What do I have to do to get out of this fucked up land, wave the Union Jack? Im just about ready to.

I think there is enough money to go around. It's only a matter of which lucky person is the benefit of a political publicity stunt.  I am an American, and wouldn't mind living in Asia or China myself. Maybe I can be a refugee in China, get a nice apartment in Beijing. Cant say I would complain. And the internet? Who needs it. I am a painter and could be happy hooking up with a chinese woman and painting city-scapes of Beijing in acrylic. Freedom of speech? Who needs it.

I know I am a loser, but the rest of what you write makes no sense. I don't know what you mean. Hardworking Americans are dupes. They have their car and mortgage payments, and the run up high electricity bills, then they complain and are depressed about the bills! I on the other hand have always been arrogant. I always refused to waste money on a car. In the United Kingdom there are actually warning ads that show a young man sleeping in his car with a slogan something like "Think before you buy that car, you may be sleeping in it." My electric bill is low, and I dont own a TV. I live in an apartment and never waste money. You are the losers for believing in the American way of life. I have been getting really bold lately, thinking of shutting off my internet and throwing out my computer. Then I could say you people have nothing on me that I even use! The fact is, thinking about the UK just now, I remember liking it quite a bit. Maybe you will get luck, and I will immigrate out of your precious working american world to the north of England.

You are a REAL LOSER! You spend your time engaging in fraud to game the system and scam hardworking Americans and contribute nothing to America while scumbags like you freeload off of America.

Listen, why do you right-wing fucktards comment and dominate every Internet forum or comment area? The Village Voice is fairly liberal. Why dont you assholes go write in your own little world in some wing-nut forum?

No, I want you to deport me as you promised. Most foreigners do not favor Americans living in their lands, and few would understand my renouncing my citizenship. Also, there is no guarantee that I would not be sent back to the USA by the Italian government, which is very likely! Then I would be stuck in the USA without a passport or ability to travel. Trust me, I have thought this through.

Go to Italy and once your there get a lawyer and  go to the U.S embassy with that lawyer as a witness and see a U.S consular officer and initiate a written sworn statement with notary that you renounce your U.S citizenship.

Listen, don't tease me with false promises. Can we expedite this deportation? I am ready to leave as early as tonight or in the morning. How soon can we get this thing rolling?

It's amazing, and you know exactly where I want to live! Italy! I am not Italian, but I always liked Italy. Russia and Ireland too! Such nice lands. Ireland is an awesome land. I find Greece a bit conservative though. I did spend some time in Turkey though, and it was a nice land. You make me dream of better lands! I heard that the dentists in Spain and Portugal are quite cheap. I could use a filling! Imagine I am deported to Italy! It's the best punishment ever! I can speak Esperanto already. Probably learn Italian pretty fast.

I should be so lucky as to be deported, though I have no relatives in any other nation and am merely Caucasian. I should like to know what land you could legally deport me to. Don't get me wrong, I would be quite grateful, especially if a similar exchange took place as with this Asian dissident. To be frank, your mentality is bizarre. It reminds me of once after traveling abroad for some months, I returned to JFK airport, and a customs official, obviously of Arabic anscestry with a nametag that said "Azziz", threatened to send me away, because I had been overseas for so many months traveling, and he suspected I didnt like the USA! Hilarious!
