Twitter was abuzz last night about Diane Keaton's appearance on the Colbert Report, with people wondering if the Annie Hall and Godfather star was drunk, high, or just plain nuts. Watching it, we wondered if Keaton was trying to out-Colbert Colbert in the performance art arena. Still, whatever she was doing didn't seem to help the cause of peddling her book, which was why she was ostensibly booked on the show. It's obvious Colbert isn't comfortable with what's happening; watch for yourself and decide what was going through Keaton's mind. We certainly found it to be the most awkward interview with a 70s star since Leonard Lopate suffered through a half hour on the air with Liza Minelli.

I thought she was kind of funny - trying to throw Colbert out of character by being provocative.

And I thought Colbert was hilariously funny, managing to stay in character and turning the table on her.

Excellent interview in my opinion - though I seem to be in the minority on this one...

I was disappointed with the interview, but Stephen can be rough on his guests. I think she was trying to out-Stephen Stephen before he could "nail" her. She seemed nervous. One thing I noticed: this was the first time since she reached "a certain age" that I've seen her without gloves.

I just listened to about 5 min of the liza minelli interview and really at least she was giving answers to his questions.. even if they were far and in between, they were answers. This interview with Diane Keaton was just a wreck! I don't think she answered anything he asked, He got so unnerved in the interview he actually said "Now before I encourage my viewers to buy the book, you have to say one fucking thing about it!" lol All she did the whole interview was laugh and call him a pervert and say don't go there... what a freak!!!! What do you want to bet she was banned from the show after this one lol

If you listen to the whole Liza interview you will hear it gets much, MUCH worse. She stops responding entirely and there is dead air as poor Leonard tries to figure out what to do.

I like Colbert more than Stewart honestly but this is what you get on Colbert, though not usually to this degree. If you're looking for intelligent interviews Stewart is far better, though not nearly as funny during his interviews.

This was probably one of the last stops on her paperback tour (I.e. the second round or interviews), so she was just having fun with Colbert. If you want a more serious discussion of the book, go back and watch her interview with Jon Stewart on the Daily Show a few months ago.
