Etan Patz Murder: Suspect Pedro Hernandez Says He'd "Done Something Bad And Killed A Child"

Categories: Missing Persons

The video above (compliments of NBC New York) is of a press conference held by NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly regarding the arrest of a suspect in the 1979 disappearance of 6-year-old Etan Patz.

The suspect has been identified as Pedro Hernandez, 51, who was arrested yesterday in Camden, New Jersey. Kelly says Hernandez made statements to police implicating himself in Patz's disappearance -- he says Hernandez used candy to lure the boy into a bodega where he worked. He then attacked him, choking the 6-year-old to death before throwing the remains in the garbage.

"We have a written confession, a signed confession," Kelly says. "We believe there is probable cause to go forward with this arrest."

It's unclear whether Hernandez has been charged with any crimes yet. The Manhattan District Attorney's Office -- the agency that reopened the decades-old case when Cy Vance took office in 2010 -- will make any charging decisions. However, Kelly's insistence that there is probable cause to arrest Hernandez indicates that police believe they've got their man, and Hernandez isn't just a lunatic using the boy's death to get his name in the papers like John Mark Karr, who in 2010 falsely claimed he murdered JonBenet Ramsey.

In the 1980s, Hernandez -- who was 19 when the murder occurred -- confessed to family members and to a religious mentor that he murdered a child. After the case got new life when authorities tore up a SoHo basement last month looking for the boy's remains, one those family members told authorities about the confession.

Authorities found nothing when they tore up the basement, which was used at the time of Patz's disappearance as a workshop for neighborhood handyman Othneil Miller, 75, who police said was the new "target" of their investigation. Miller was never charged.

Patz -- who was the first missing child to appear on the side of a milk carton -- was last seen on May 25, 1979, as he was walking just two blocks to a bus stop on his way to school. It was the first time he'd made the trip alone. He was never seen again -- and was declared dead in 2001.

Vance's office is yet to comment on the case. Check back tomorrow for updates.

Many conflicting reports & after the way we witnessed the incompetence of the mainstream media in reporting the Trayvon Martin shooting, I don't have much faith they'll get THIS story right either.

The closeness to the anniversary of Etan's disappearance is one red flag here that makes me suspicious.

The reports that this man is battling cancer makes me wonder if his real reason for confessing is so he can get (free) medical attention in his last months?

Is it even possible that this guy is dying & he made some kind of deal with Jose Ramos to take the rap so Ramos can get the civil case he lost overturned? Ramos was declared responsible for Etan's death & the court awarded the Patz' $2 million. Of course, Ramos has no money NOW but if he ever does, he would be ordered to pay the Patz family.

Ramos is scheduled to be released in Nov. 2012. If Ramos could clear his name as far as being Etan's killer AND earns money from interviews, books &/or movie deals about 'his' being falsely accused…. he COULD potentially have money to share with Hernadez' wife & daughter after his death from cancer?

My personal guess is this guy is an attention seeker & the confession will amount to nothing EXCEPT more pain for Etan's parents & loved ones as their wounds are reopened.

PEDRO HERNANDEZ IS INNOCENT

Police say that 51-year-old Pedro Hernandez, of New Jersey, was working as a stock clerk at a bodega on 448 West Broadway and Prince St. inManhattan when he spotted Patz and lured him into the store with the promise ofa soda. Hernandez then allegedly led Patz down into the basement of the bodega.Would he have gone with someone for a crummy soda? What were his parent’svegans and would not let him have soda? What about other workers in the bodega? He was a newly hired stock clerk; he did not open the place. The owner or otheremployees must have seen him go in and walk down to the basement with Etan. Theyhad to be there for the breakfast rush. The food was grease fried in oil. Whatwere they thinking? They were Catholics and the church taught themhomosexuality and pedophilia was wrong. Why didn’t they report this later on? Theywere questioned but Pedro was not. No one said, “Oh yeah on the day the kid went missing I saw Pedro lead a kid into the basement. You think there isconnection?” Was Pedro the only one with access to the basement? Didother workers go down to the basement that day and stumble across the body?Have the cops located others who worked at that bodega during this time periodand questioned them. They were questioned at the time but not Pedro.

I am a garbologist (I invented the word garbology) and have collected much garbage in my time and there is no way that a kid weighing 40 to 50 pounds[1] would not rupture the average 1.1. mil garbage bag or would not have drawn suspicion from the garbage men because trash is not as impacted as a human body. Then he had to drag the bag to another location, I assume that very night. A lot of people get uptight when you put commercial trash in front of their building or any trash for that matter. If he used a thicker commercial garbage bag it would have stood among the others. If he said he dismembered the kid that would be one thing. Think about the size of the average garbage bag and its thickness and he says he stuffed him in then put trash on top.

[1]According to data published by the CDC in May, 2000, the 50th percentile weightfor boys, age 72.5 months is 20.777 kg (45.8 lbs) and for girls it is 20.33636kg (44.8 lbs). The 50th percentile serves as a stand-in for an average: halfthe subjects weigh more than this amount and half weigh less.

Thank you for this!!!! I am NOT buying this confession nor am I buying how quick the cops are to jump on it and start proclaiming it as fact! Let us all remember John Mark Karr and his false confession. Pedro Hernandez has a history of schizophrenia and bipolar and his lawyer is admitting he has auditory and visual hallucinations. This whole story smacks of an impetuous leap to close this very high profile case and my concern is the real perp Jose Ramos is going to be released in 6 months to rape and kill again.

The parents must have warned Eton, "Don't take candy from strangers" when he went out on his own. He was not dumb. It had to be someone he trusted like the baby-sitters boyfriend Jose Ramos. He could say Oh your baby sitter wants to see you etc.
