Manny Pacquiao's Not As Much Of A Homophobe As 'Examiner' Makes Him Out To Be . "Journalist" Comes Clean

mannypunch.jpg
The media (especially "The Examiner") Owes Manny Pacquiao an apology.

Manny Pacquiao's feeling the heat from the homosexual community over comments he apparently didn't even make.

The "journalist" who published an article that attributed a quote from the Bible calling for the death of homosexuals to Pacquiao has since backed off his claim that Pacquiao's the one who referenced the passage.

Granville Ampong, the "conservative examiner" over at Examiner.com (a news website that lets just about anyone submit articles) now says Pacquiao never referenced the offensive passage taken from Leviticus 20:13, which states that "if a man lies with a man as one lies with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They must be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads."

But no, it's not Ampong who's to blame for misleading people into thinking Pacquiao referenced the Bible passage (according to him, anyway), it's everyone else in the media (note: prior to publishing anything about Pacquiao, we contacted his representatives four times to give him a chance to explain his quotes in the Examiner article. Nobody got back to us).

In a blog post published this morning -- under the headline "Biased Writers Grossly Twisted Pacquiao's View On Same-Sex Marriage," Ampong claims he never attributed the Bible passage to Pacquiao, and that the media's to blame for writing the narrative that Pacquiao thinks gay people should die.

Ampong calls out two journalists in particular -- USA Today's Tom Wier and LA Weekly's Dennis Romero (note: LA Weekly is owned by the same parent company as the Village Voice). He points to Wier's article and writes the following:

In his article, Weir said "Pacquiao also invoked Old Testament, and recited Leviticus 20:13, saying: "If a man lies with a man as one lies with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They must be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads," referencing my fourth paragraph which states: "Pacquiao's directive for Obama calls societies to fear God and not to promote sin, inclusive of same-sex marriage and cohabitation, notwithstanding what Leviticus 20:13 has been pointing all along: "If a man lies with a man as one lies with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They must be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads." That, Pacquiao never said nor recited, nor invoked and nor did he ever refer to such context.

Ummm...what?! We -- and dozens of other news outlets -- read the same article, in which Ampong clearly credits Pacquiao with quoting the Bible passage. It's since been modified to clarify that Pacquiao isn't the one who made the reference.

He goes on to say that Romero's headline was inaccurate (which -- while we hate to throw a fellow VVMer under the bus -- it was).

Romero's headline is as follows: "Manny Pacquiao Says Gay Men Should Be 'Put To Death.'"

Even if Pacquiao did reference the heinous passage (which he apparently didn't), it wasn't him saying he wants to kill gay people, he was just quoting what it says in the Bible -- as idiotic as it may be. Although, later in Ampong's article, he quotes Pacquiao as saying that society needs to "put God's word first." According to Catholics (like Pacquiao), the Bible is God's word -- so (again, according to religious types who take the Bible literally) homosexuals must die.

News that Pacquiao's a homophobe spread across the Interwebs all day yesterday and well into the night. The quotes Ampong (incorrectly) attributed to Pacquiao have prompted gay advocacy groups to call on Nike to stop sponsoring him.

Pacquiao's finally chimed in (not to us, despite our four attempts to get an explanation) on his website, where he offers lame "proof" that he doesn't hate gay people by notifying the world that he has "a relative who is also gay."

See Pacquiao's statement below:

"I didn't say that, that's a lie... I didn't know that quote from Leviticus because I haven't read the Book of Leviticus yet," [Pacquiao] said.

Pacquiao explained his true feelings towards the gay community.

Pacquiao said: "I'm not against gay people... I have a relative who is also gay. We can't help it if they were born that way. What I'm critical off are actions that violate the word of God. I only gave out my opinion that same sex marriage is against the law of God,"

As explained in previous pieces this is more in line with the Manny Pacquiao ,we have come to know, and work with over the years.

In any event, it appears we -- and countless others (Ampong in particular) -- owe Pacquiao an apology. He's apparently not as much of a homophobe as Ampong made him out to be. However, he still opposes letting gay people tie the knot, which -- while being an obnoxious opinion -- is a far cry from calling for the death of human beings based on their sexual orientation.

We sent Ampong an email asking if he'd like to explain why he misled people with his article. We haven't heard back.

VV I am dissapoint!

It's possible to make an entirely cogent argument that 20:13 is merely a law against MFM threesomes.

If you use Bible as reference to what God's principle on Gays.   True christian should not hate Gays, They should also be treated with Respect same with others.  But what God detest is the Homosexuality act, That is what they are doing in Sodom and Gomorrah and that they were punished.  It's not only in the old testament you can find laws as such, you can also find it in the NEW TESTAMENT. check this out :

1 Corinthians 6:9-11.

9 What! Do YOU not know that unrighteous persons will not inherit God’s kingdom? Do not be misled. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor men kept for unnatural purposes, nor men who lie with men, 10 nor thieves, nor greedy persons, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit God’s kingdom. 11 And yet that is what some of YOU were. But YOU have been washed clean, but YOU have been sanctified, but YOU have been declared righteous in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ and with the spirit of our God.

My take:  Do not ask someone about gay to a person who is reading and following the bible or you might not like the answer.  Ask someone who is more liberal, who goes to church but doesn't read bible or more likely to those who don't go to church anymore.

no retraction, no apology to the little asian guy who got his name smeared.  It was even his fault he didn't return call to village voice, a site he probably didn't heard of and who called him 4 times. nice james king, after comparing pacman to those westboro idiots.

Just PLEASE before you take Pacquiao out to the Woodshed....check out his voting record at home.....He gives almost all he has to the Poor/Underprivileged...he is NOT a hateful person.http://www.congress.gov.ph/mem...

Also, watch (guess YouTube)---the HBO stuff following him around before a Fight---And talking about he wishes all his winnings to go to help the Poor (especially Children)---in his native homeland.

VoiceofReason2012
VoiceofReason2012

Of course he DID NOT SAY IT---it's not even a platform he holds as a Congressman in the Philippines. His platform is saving Children from Poverty. (and what he gives ALMOST ALL his money away to---He would be a Democrat, were he in America---If this Publication (or any other trying to kill his career would have taken a mere 2-minutes---to look up his voting record in the Philippines, they'd quickly see he's LEFT---and the only "Right" stance he takes is against abortion, again a 'Religious Filter" he uses.

Manny P. gives SO MUCH of his money to the poor in his country...his trainer, Freddie Roach--literally has "threatened" (jokingly of course)---but has told him---if he doesn't stop it---he'll have nothing left when his career is over...and he's gonna take measures to put some of his winnings in a trust fund so as his trainer and one of this best friends to "protect" him from losing it all.

Listen folks--the guy is Roman Catholic---what were you gonna except him to say about Gay Marriage. It's just as insane as asking Floyd Merriweather (an African American) if he believes in Affirmative Action and Civil rights...OF COURSE HE DOES---what answer would you expect?

I happen to disagree with Manny's opinion---but my 135IQ makes me smart enough to know, what answer he's gonna give. AND, also makes me smart enough to know that  because he's not a native English speaker---and if you watch ANY interview he gives...he stumbles over words like "Conditioning and Training and 'New Approach to this Fight". (words *NATIVE* to his CAREER AND JOB!!!!!)

Trust me, the few times I've seen him give an interview---and he has to turn and ask a friend to translate words like "Conditioning" or "New approach to fight"---I GUARANTEE YOU---he did not know the English word for  Leviticus, Sodomite, etc. Everything I own. People there are 100-more people that need to be called out of all people Pacquiao is about 501 that needs to be taken to the woodshed.

Why not spend all this energy trying to get Westboro and their ILK---put in JAIL/out of business----vs. Some boxer some right win Zealot wanted to mis-quote to get Pacquiao on "his side"

James King, I've never read your articles before, but your hypercritical and hypersensitive reaction to a quote that never was from an unreliable journalistic source disgusts me. Just because the man doesn't agree with your opinion on gay marriage under the law of God doesn't mean you should crucify him.

So how many more liberals plan to apologize to Manny Pacquiao? I'm not holding my breath. These are the same Democrats who smeared the Duke lacrosse team for that bogus rape.

and by the way james king, ampong's original offending column wasn't changed as you claimed, it's still the same.  no shame in admitting mistake that you piled on pacman based on erronous reporting you heard.

go to pacland website and look at the comments about ampong.  even before this hulaboo, he is notorious among filipino boxing fans as the preacher slash wannabee boxing "journalist" who even went to a press conference of a pac-margarito fight using a taped on press pass of a pac-cotto fight almost 2 years ago just to get in. james king should research more about ampong before piling on pacman.  ampong likes to make grand misleading headlines as boxing examiner to get hits.

So, now God's word consists of " the heinous passage" also known as "the offensive passage" and "what it says in the Bible -- as idiotic as it may be."  I feel sorry for the blasphemous heathen who wrote those words.

He's not even an American citizen - why does that matter to us?  He should go back to his country and tell that to his people, where he's apparently a politician.

Stick to boxing, Manny.

You owe your readers a retraction, and maybe in the future don't cite the Examiner so quickly.  And there is a HUGE difference between what you attributed to Pacquiao and what he actually said.  Like the difference between Fred Phelps and somebody's grandma (or someone's relative from a third world country where gay marriage isn't even close to being an issue) who doesn't want the gays marrying.

Mpmiller2
Mpmiller2

Example....I am famous and have a strong stance of being pro-choice. James King hears from a source that I've said "I enjoy killing everything unborn". He goes on to publish multiple articles bashing me. He does this ultimately being proven incorrect (as I never said it) because of poor journalism and bitterness over not having his call returned. Ultimately, I am denied entrance to a mall while Mr King refuses to take any blame for adding to the media firestorm....Same thing, different side of the aisle. I do happen to be pro-choice, against organized religion, and don't care either way about gay marriage. With freedom of speech I can share that, much like King gets to share his opinions....But, James King, you take it to another level when you report incorrect information and use quotes such as "god hates fags" and "homophobic" in your blogs depicting Manny Pacquiao as the feature subject. You were wrong to write hurtful comments while not knowing the truth or respecting someone else's right to free speech.

Slyguy9999
Slyguy9999

Ok, so he's not an an extreme homophobe, just a regular christian one...are you for real James King?  This piece doesn't absolve Pacquiao, it just affirms your negative beliefs of Christians.

Pacquiao didn't quote the scripture but he did reference Lady Gaga ("We can't help it if they were BORN THAT WAY")...doesn't that show Pacquiao's tolerance?  LOL

Still sounds like an intellectual cripple to me.  Also, FYI James King, you're kind of an asshole.  It's not just the "homosexual community" (you sound like a hillbillly) that is outraged by Pacquiao's comment, it's a broad cross section of people.  In fact, I was made aware of this story by an enraged straight male.  You should get your shit together and be a little more thorough with your research before you start hacking together your stories.

ToBeChun

My understanding is, majority of people in North America are against gay marriage.   I do not think this majority will jump up and down if Pacquaio said he was for gay marriage.  Pacquaio is a boxer, great one at that.  Pacquaio campaigned for Harry Reid.  Pacquaio is a liberal and liberals should give Pacquaio a pass and let him box instead of protesting to get Nike to drop him.

By the way- Paiquiao is a catholic but he hasn't read the book of Leviticus yet? Isn't it the third book of the bible (if read in chronological order)? He is just another example of a religious person and a devout catholic who never read the bible. I'm beginning to think that the only people that have actually read the bible are atheists.

Sorry, but this part of your story is beyond STUPID.  So, just because I reference Hitler quotes, I'm not racist or encouraging genocide or anything.  FAIL, you stupid asshole.

So did Manny quote the verse or didn't he? I'm still confused. In any event, as a devout Roman Catholic I presume he is not too gay friendly, in line with the teachings of his church.

immacatblargh
immacatblargh

A lot of churches are accepting of people despite who they love.

The New testament condemns women who wear braids (something one chooses might I add)  and yet there are no Anti Braid Wearing Women movements or organizations. There are no No To Women In Gold. There is no proposition making it illegal for me to clip my plated hair with my grandmother's gold hair pin.

I read the Bible. I've gone to church. I've some pretty liberal views. Now what?

Bernie Honrade

Rich, I understand your gay feeling being hurt with a bit of itching ass.  Pacman's crew are unable to answer questions that will distract his training for his upcoming fight.  I assure you that he doesn't hate gays, he has experience with gays during his young/poor years and even his mom looks like a gay.  Anyway, as he said, it is his own opinion about the marriage on two men and he is basing his opinion from Bible.  Next time let's us ask Manny to use PlayGirl as his reference and for sure he will have different answer, right ?

Dude, he's Roman Catholic---Roman Catholics consider the NEW Testament the "new law"--and the bible is not a "BOOK"---it's a series of Manuscripts...a bunch of dudes got together one day to try and say this is what we'll include---this is what we'll toss out. It's not even a COMPLETE telling of the story----so, always error in doubt that a "Christian" has 1-even Read the Bible, and 2-read the old testament

It's not a "Book" that's read cover to cover....and

Yes, I disagree with Pacquiao The dude he believes to be God---NEVER ONCE---talked about Homosexuality. Furthermore, the word "Christian" was used as a SLUR word back in Ancient times...so, there literally is no definition of what a "Christian" should be or believe.....thus why I personally could care less who loves who...Bob/Steve...fine with me...as a Liberal believer.

I'm not saying it's OK, I was just saying that the way the LA Weekly headline is written is misleading. I had roughly the same headline for my original Manny post but changed it because it came across as misleading to me. Saying you want to kill gay people is not the same as saying the Bible says you should kill gay people. Neither is OK, just different. Hope I can win you back.

Well, then it's amazing that news outlets are relying on an "article" written by somebody who is an "examiner."  Anyone can be an "examiner" and write whatever shit they want.  But why on earth would real journalists give this kind of "article" any credence?

Charlie_Subby

I'm not a religious head, but like I said before, 'not required'. Most Catholic teachings are citing from the New Testament, since it's the Jesus kind of testament. Actually, some, if not most Catholic people dies without even reading a bible. God's law? That's the use of their priest. They're not a Bible people, and that I'm certain.

I love the VV calling out Examiner.com for accuracy, then spouting wholly inaccurate, unfounded statements like "a website that lets just about anyone submit articles" which notes a complete lack of research on the writer end. I am an Examiner and everyone who wants to contribute to the site must undergo a  comprehensive review and application process, and even then they still only accept less than 35% of those who apply. Pot meet kettle...
