Upstate Woman Witnesses Soldier Husband's Death During Skype Chat

Categories: Sad Things

Governor Andrew Cuomo has directed that flags be flown at half-mast following the death of a New York soldier killed in Afghanistan on Monday. Adding to the tragedy, the soldier's wife apparently witnessed her husband's death as the two were chatting on Skype.

The governor's office says Captain Bruce K. Clark, 43, died in Tarin Kowt, Afghanistan while serving as an Army medic supporting Operation Enduring Freedom. Clark, who lives in Spencerport -- a suburb of Rochester -- was assigned to A Company, Troop Command, William Beaumont Army Medical Center, in El Paso, Texas.

"On behalf of all New Yorkers, I express my condolences to the family, friends, and fellow soldiers of Captain Clark," Cuomo says in a statement. "We mourn the loss of this New York soldier and we will honor his service and dedication to our nation."

It's unclear how Clark was killed, but a spokesman for his family says his wife actually witnessed his death.

"Bruce's wife tragically witnessed her husband's death during one of their regular Skype video-chats on Monday," Bradley Taber-Thomas said in a prepared statement first provided to the Associated Press. "At the time of the incident, the family was hoping for a rescue and miracle, but later learned that it was not to be."

Clark's body was returned to Dover Air Force Base yesterday. A funeral is scheduled but details were not immediately available.

"While we understand the interest our family's tragedy will attract given the unique circumstances, we ask that our privacy be respected during our time of grief," Taber-Thomas continues.

Hello Mr. King!  I found a quiet story where you might actually see my post...  How are you liking New York?  I see you have found some interesting topics to post on.  We miss you in Phoenix.  While Matthew is doing a good job, you are a tough act to follow.  Too bad you left just as JT Ready was about to self-destruct.  I'm sure you could come up with some good Pearce-Ready snarky stuff.  Have you followed our local politics since your move?  I'm sure you know Thomas and Aubuchon were disbarred and Alexander suspended.  Joe is still making announcements that he is planning announcements about Obama's birth certificate and our law-makers are still trying to pull the wool over our eyes with 11th hour bills that they're hoping we don't see.  As always, your former AZ colleagues are making sure we're up to speed.  Do pop over to Valley Fever and post a greeting every now and then if you can!
