Barack Obama to Couples: Ask for Campaign Donations Instead of Wedding Gifts

russian.jpg
Want to make that special day -- your wedding -- even more special?

Well, President Barack Obama has one idea: You can ask your guests to donate to his campaign "in lieu of a gift" with the Obama event registry.

For reals.

Campaign staffer Laura Wilson wrote on Obama's fundraising blog: "Got a birthday, anniversary, or wedding coming up? Let your friends know how important this election is to you -- register with Obama 2012, and ask for a donation in lieu of a gift. It's a great way to support the President on your big day. Plus, it's a gift that we can all appreciate -- and goes a lot further than a gravy bowl."

News of this has apparently been circulating the conservative blogosphere and news media since Team Obama posted the notice Friday, but it was just brought to our attention via Slate.

Though this politicking is being derided as tacky (with good reason) another bit posted on the Obamablog rivals the registry's cheesiness -- Obama's dating tips.

Yes, the leader of the free world is imploring young men to take their romantic interests on long walks, to museums, and to artsy movies: "Guys out there, art, it impresses people," he said.

Michelle said that their first date -- which included an art museum trip and a Spike Lee flick -- "showed all his sides -- he was hip, cutting edge, cultural, sensitive..."

Oy.

We're still checking into this, but we are not yet aware of a similar Mitt Romney wedding/event registry, so if you happen to know of one, let us know.

Only someone as stupid as Obama would ask such a thing,

Embarrassing. Genuinely embarrassing and certainly beneath the office of the POTUS. Politicizing one of the greatest days in a young couples' life? Freakin' disgraceful.

While they would like you to give up your wedding gifts, to help them out Michelle and her entourage,of staff, family and friends travel the world, staying at five star hotels, Having the little people chased off the beach, so they can have all to themselves and the photographers who snap her, looking very regal I find both of them a disgrace

Believe1952: As tacky as the GOPs billionaire sugar daddies like the Kochs, Adelson, Foster Friess, etc.? First time an incumbent President gets outspent. But I'm sure they're giving millions to Romney to protect "freedom" and "democracy," right? What's the ROI on freedom, BTW?

Yup. The really depressing thing is, even though it looks copy-pasted...I honestly think it might not be.

Funding provided to each side is astronomically different.  Left has much more, like a quote reviewing The New Leviathan, stating "progressive foundations have about $105 billion in assets, a figure 10 times larger than the amount held by conservative foundations. Not one conservative foundation has assets exceeding $1 billion. Fourteen liberal foundations do. The money available to liberal activists dwarfs what conservative groups have access to."
