The police are looking for Norman Vanigas (at right) after he allegedly sexually assaulted a woman Sunday and then fired a shot at police officers as they closed in, NYPD officials say.

The incident took place around 11 p.m. Sunday, after the female victim, 21, called 911 to report that she had been sexually assaulted at gun- and knife-point on Oceanview Avenue in the Coney Island section of Brooklyn.

Police arrived on the scene and spoke with the woman, and then conducted a search. They spotted Vanigas, 23, of Brooklyn,on the east side of Brighton 10th Street, walking toward Neptune Avenue. They drove in front of him, trying to stop him. He fled along Neptune Avenue and drew a gun. As the officers took cover, Vanigas fired one round from his firearm in the officers' direction. He then fled and got away. The officers did not fire their weapons.
