The Bronx District Attorney's Office has officially announced that the NYPD officer who shot an unarmed teen earlier this year has been indicted on two counts of manslaughter and now faces up to 25 years in prison.

The grand jury that signed off on the charges found that Officer Richard Haste acted "recklessly" when he shot 18-year-old Ramarley Graham back in February and that he "caused the death... while acting with intent to cause serious physical injury (to Graham) by shooting him."

If you're unfamiliar with the case, click here. In short, Haste and other NYPD officers assigned to a narcotics unit saw Graham on the street and though he was acting suspiciously. They followed him to his apartment, where Haste shot him in front of the teen's family.

Haste has formally been charged with first-degree manslaughter, a class B felony, and second-degree manslaughter, a class C felony. If convicted of the B felony, the officer faces up to 25 years in prison. If convicted of the lesser offense, he's looking at up to 15 years behind bars.

Haste's attorney, Stuart London, addressed the media this morning, saying "it's always difficult but [Haste is] being very strong. He understands the seriousness of these charges and he also feels for the family. He understands the tragic nature that there's a loss of life. At this point he is surviving the day and we'll move forward and get ready for trial."

The case is now heading to trial, with Acting State Supreme Court Justice Martin Marcus setting Haste's bail at $50,000. The officer is due back in court on September 13.

That cop will have to live with this for the rest of his life. Maybe stricter controls on testing for deployment of a firearm could be introduced.
