Robert Johnson, Bronx DA, Sets Up Hotline to Gather Info on Horace Mann Sex Abuse Claims

In a new development in the controversy surrounding sex abuse allegations at Horace Mann, Bronx District Attorney Robert Johnson has established a confidential hotline to gather accounts of misconduct.

The move is part of an initial inquiry into allegations that several Horace Mann teachers had sexual contact with students two decades ago, as reported in the New York Times on June 6

Johnson "is encouraging anyone with information about staff members inappropriate sexual conduct with students at the Horace Mann School to come forward and report the incidents," a press release says.

The special hotline number is (718) 838-7382. All calls will be kept confidential.

In a letter to City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, Johnson said he would also investigate the school's culpability in failing to report allegations to law enforcement authorities. He indicates in the letter that the so-called "mandated reporting law" applies only to public schools.

That's a huge loophole in a law rightly designed to protect children from predatory adults. "This may require legislative action," he writes, concluding, "We will continue to look into this matter."
