Wendy Long: What Does NY's GOP Senate Candidate Want To Do With Your Vagina?

Sorry, ladies: even though today is a great day to have a vagina in America, there are still politicians out there who want to control our girlparts -- even in New York.

One of those pols, recently nominated Manhattan lawyer Wendy Long, will face off against U.S. Sen Kirsten Gillibrand in November.

So what exactly does Long want to do with your vagina?

Long, as it turns out, appears to be against abortion in all cases. That's right -- she does not seem to think that there should be exceptions for rape, incest, or health problems.

Don't believe us?

Well, Long's campaign posted this handy chart on her website.

In case you couldn't read that teeny, tiny print, it says of Long's position on choice: "100% pro-life from conception to natural death. She has the support of the Susan B. Anthony LIst and she has been an outspoken advocate on the issue of life."

She's also on the record as saying that she's for the Blunt Amendment and described contraception as a "far left" issue.

Oh yeah...in Long's opinion, nobody would notice if Roe were overturned.

She said that, for reals.

From Capital New York:

"'I think there is a universal understanding among the legal community that Roe v. Wade was a very flawed legal decision,'" she said. "'It's a horrible decision from a constitutional law standpoint, and even liberal law professors will tell you that.

"'I believe that the issue of abortion should be left to the people to decide. The Constitution doesn't mention the word abortion. So I think that's what it's really all about. And if Roe v. Wade were overturned tomorrow, nobody would even notice, because the states are legislating their own laws about abortion, completely independent."'

According to RH Reality Check, she's part of the conservative Catholic' "Fortnight of Freedom" event which protests no co-payments for birth control.

She also wants to de-fund Planned Parenthood.

The Susan B. Anthony List, a pro-life PAC, had this to say about Long upon endorsing her:

"'There could not be a more clear contrast between longtime pro-life leader Wendy Long and EMILY's List poster child Senator Gillibrand,'" said Susan B. Anthony List Candidate Fund President Marjorie Dannenfelser. "'Wendy understands that the only 'war on women' is the one being waged against women of faith and conscience by the Obama administration and their allies in Congress and the abortion lobby. She has boldly called on Senator Gillibrand to end the assault on Life, conscience, and religious liberty.'"

"'From her days as a Hill staffer to her time at Americans United for Life and her work on behalf of Supreme Court Justices who practice judicial restraint, Wendy has constantly been engaged in the fight for adherence to the Constitution and the right to Life laid out in the Declaration of Independence,'" continued Dannenfelser. "'We look forward to having her back on Capitol Hill and adding to the number of pro-life women in the Senate.'"

Wendy Long's pro-life activism began on Capitol Hill where she served as press secretary for pro-life Senators Gordon Humphrey (R-NH) and Bill Armstrong (R-CO). Long put her congressional work on hold to join Americans United for Life and was inspired to obtain a law degree to better defend pro-life principles. She studied at Northwestern University School of Law under the direction of pro-life legal scholar, the late Professor Victor G. Rosenblum. She also studied at Harvard Law School under the direction of Professor Mary Ann Glendon. Her professional legal career includes serving as a law clerk for Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas and private practice with the Kirkland & Ellis law firm in New York City."

We reached out to Long's campaign to see whether we could chat with her about this.

We also sent an e-mail, as we wanted to give her the chance to clarify her position.

What we wanted to know: if she really does believe in so extreme a position, would Ms. Long also maintain that position if she or her own daughter -- or another female family member -- were sexually assaulted and impregnated? Would she go through with the pregnancy or require that they do so, etc?

We'll update if we hear back.
