Crime citywide is up by 4 percent through last week, pushed largely by an increase in grand larcenies, though there have been 15 percent fewer homicides so far this year over last, NYPD figures through July 8 show.

Much more troubling are the larger increases in some of the city's police precincts. Twenty two precincts--or nearly one-third of the citywide total--have experienced double digit percentage crime spikes so far this year, including the high profile Central Park precinct.

The largest increase has been in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn's 61st Precinct which has seen crime rise by 48 percent, fueled by increases in burglaries, robberies and grand larceny. The Upper East Side's has had a 17 percent jump in crime, while the 20th Precinct on the Upper West Side has seen car thefts more than triple, as part of a 17 percent rise in crime.

The release of the figures comes on the heels of a particularly bad week in which 77 people were shot, and 16 people murdered over the long July 4 weekend.
