Medical Marijuana: Maine Establishes Prescription Pot Guidelines

In Maine, state regulators are trying to come up with new ways to manage medical marijuana.

Maine health officials want to make a prescription pot patient-monitoring program optional. Now, users must participate in a state ID program that keeps track of them, according to The Associated Press.

The proposed changes are the first since 2009, when curative cannabis got the OK in the state.

Some others?

Well, if the reforms get enacted, cops would be barred from seizing marijuana "belonging to a patient, caregiver or dispensary" unless they have more than the legal amount or if said seizure relates to a criminal investigation.

One reform has drawn the ire of some medical marijuana advocates.

That proposed change would require 8-foot privacy fences around any outdoor medical marijuana cultivation site, the AP notes.

And cops are already barred from seizing marijuana "belonging to a patient, caregiver or dispensary" unless they have more than the legal amount or if said seizure relates to a criminal investigation by the law that passed in 2011, LD1296.

Furthermore, the new rules are PROPOSED not Established.

They would impose restrictions are far more than just requiring an 8 foot fence.

The proposed rules would also require 24 hour motion-detector lighting, effectively shutting down a grower's ability to flower, when plants need 12 hours of darkness, and allow the Department to impose new security requirements at any time.

It also bans patients-- who are incapacitated, homeless, or unable to grow at their residence, such as in an apartment or federally subsidised housing, from cultivating their own medicine at all, even if they have permission from a landowner, or assistance from a caregiver or family member.

Victoria - Maybe you should do some research before you write - Maine does not require registration with the state - "we the people" decided not to allow the state to invade our privacy and track patients through state registration (this is an optional program)
