Medical Marijuana: Can It Treat Diarrhea?

Well then.

We're not sure how accurate this item is, but it's interesting reading, to say that least: The Weed Blog claims that medical marijuana might be good for treating the runs.

The blog says that pot has been prescribed as a diarrhea treatment since at least 1886, as indicated by an edition of the Indian Medical Gazette.

At that time, the Gazette notes, people used a formula made up of a "cannabis tincture, chloroform and morphine."

(Nowadays, though, the blog generally recommends inhaling a dominant indica for this purpose.)

Anyway, pot supposedly causes diarrhea and related symptoms to subside and prompts patients to regain their appetites.

Again, we're not scientists, but the blog isn't the only place mentioning this palliative effect: Many claim that cannabis can treat a wide variety of gastrointestinal ailments -- from simple loose stool to Crohn's disease.

And in some states where medical marijuana is legal, such as Arizona, diseases affecting this bodily system are indeed listed as qualifying conditions for cannabis cards.

My name is Debbie Wilson. I had my colon removed 11 years ago. Three years ago I went off a dozen medicines to do a medical cannabis trial. I was able to donate three cases of diapers to a local nursing home. I no longer live with chronic diahrea or wasting syndrome. My pottassium dropping does not put me in ICU monthly anymore. You can read my story in Nov. 2011 Treating Yourself Magazine. Please come visit me at my Brain Injury Awareness and Education FB Page and Debbie Wilson's Family Brain Injury Blog.

I just dont get it. I see weed is doing good things for people. Legal in some contries and legal in some states for medical use. I see there is nothing they say that weed has any side affects. No i am sorry, There is a side affect. THE MUNCHIES. I have a nuerological disorder, The doc wanted me on xanax. I took it for a month. I almost killed myself by taking to much. I stopped taking the drug and just say fuck the government, they dont care for no one so i started to smoke weed without the medical card and i feel good and my nerves are under control. So legal or not NOBODY is going to stop the marijuana trade. viva marijuana. fuck the feds.

Dr. Mahmoud ElSohly, director of the Marijuana Project at the University of Mississippi, the nations only licensed grower says of cannabis, "is a true wonder weed that, broken down into its chemical components, can be used for both constipation and diarrhea". ElSohly and his colleagues have spent years studying and isolating the plant's medical effects."

Science has established that the therapeutic effects of Cannabis include its properties as an analgesic (pain-killer), anti-emetic (anti-nausea) and anti-inflammatory.  It is the latter property that makes the drug useful for treating symptoms of Crohn's Disease and other forms of IBS (Irritated Bowel Syndrome).  I am not a doctor or scientist, but suspect that it is this therapeutic effect that may also provide relief from the discomfort of diarrhea.  The distinction is that Cannabis has not been proven to "cure" anything, but the evidence of thousands of years of medical practice and modern scientific studies have shown it to be a powerful palliative drug, which relieves symptoms of a host of diseases and conditions. In addition, because of its relatively few side-effects, for many patients it can be a good complement to powerful pharmaceutical drugs that treat the same symptoms but have their own debilitating, and often devastating, side-effects.
