Stacy Dawn Murphy, 20: Another Death at Scientology's Flagship Narconon Drug Treatment Center in Oklahoma

I just got off the phone with Colin Henderson, who is frenetically monitoring breaking news in Oklahoma, where yet another patient at Scientology's flagship Narconon drug treatment center has been found dead.

Jeanne LeFlore of the McAlester News-Capital broke the news earlier today that Stacy Dawn Murphy, 20, had died at the facility, which is in the town of Canadian.

By the time that news hit, Henderson was already sending out messages to Oklahoma state officials, putting even more heat on them now that at least three deaths have occurred at the Narconon center since this past October.

"This young lady's death is on the hands of the Oklahoma Department of Mental Health Substance Abuse Services for their inaction after two previous deaths," Henderson tells me.

Henderson himself was a patient at the center in July 2007. Since then, he's been trying to get the word out about Narconon's quack science, its reliance on low-paid non-medical staff, rampant drug abuse among patients, and dangerous conditions for patients in withdrawal.

His efforts resulted in a recent three-part series by Marisa Mendelson at the Fox affiliate in Oklahoma City. "That scrutiny definitely helped," Henderson says, but now he's angry that another patient has died while most of his messages to state officials have gone unanswered.

Today, he says, he and David Edgar Love were talking on a Skype call at about 2:40 pm when they were tipped by one of their Facebook sources with connections inside the Narconon facility.

"We were told a woman had died of an overdose in the withdrawal unit this morning. I called the sheriff's department, and they confirmed that there had been a death," Henderson says. "I started making immediate phone calls to state officials, including the governor's office."

LeFlore reported that the death is under investigation by the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation.

Stacy Murphy was from Owasso, Oklahoma, and I found this photo of her at her Facebook page...

StacyDawnMurphy.jpg

Henderson says that he's been sending hundreds of messages about Narconon's unscientific methods and its real purpose -- to recruit patients into Scientology -- and has targeted in particular his state representative, T. W. Shannon, who is slated to become Oklahoma's next Speaker of the House if Republicans hold a majority after the next election.

Henderson says this is the last thing he received from Shannon, an e-mail sent March, 2011: "Don't have enough info to form an opinion. In general, I support faith-based treatment programs as statistics prove they have some higher rates of success. I don't see a problem with facilities being up front regarding their priorities."

"That last line shows that he hasn't read a single thing about the place," Henderson says -- Narconon centers always downplay their connection to Scientology, and patients around the country are often referred to the centers by parents or courts while completely unaware that they are putting vulnerable people in the hands of Scientology recruiters.

Now, Henderson says, Murphy's death may finally make Shannon take another look at this "faith-based" facility.

"When I called today, his executive secretary said that Shannon was on the phone with the Department of Mental Health for the first time, discussing Narconon."

And Scientology's drug treatment center may have even more to be concerned about: on August 24, Henderson tells me, David Love is coming to town.

New readers might want to check out our primer, "What is Scientology?" Another good overview is our series from last summer, "Top 25 People Crippling Scientology." At the top of every story, you'll see the "Scientology" category which, if you click on it, will bring up all of our most recent stories.

As for hot subjects we've covered here, you may have heard about Debbie Cook, the former church official who rebelled and was sued by Scientology. You might have also heard about the Super Power Building, Scientology's "Mecca," whose secrets were revealed here. We also reported how Scientology spied on its own most precious object, Tom Cruise. (We wrote Tom an open letter that he has yet to respond to.) Have you seen a Scientology ad on TV lately? We debunked some of the claims in that 2-minute commercial you might have seen while watching Glee or American Idol.

Other stories have looked at Scientology's policy of "disconnection" that is tearing families apart. You may also have heard something about the Sea Org experiences of the Paris sisters, Valeska and Melissa, and their friend Ramana Dienes-Browning. We've also featured Paulette Cooper, who wrote about Scientology back in the day, and Janet Reitman, Hugh Urban, and the team at the Tampa Bay Times, who write about it today. And there's plenty more coming.

new headline:

Drug addicts as young as 19 and 20 years odl die in rehabs and prison and jail..What can we do to help drug addcits and make our society better?

meidaatit
meidaatit

How many young addcits die in prison, jail, and other rehabs? How many of these facilities including the jail or prsion have 24-7 medical supervision? How successful are the other rehabs, the jails? the prisons? Our news needs to evalaute all centers and when a young addcit dies in prison or jail the public needs to know.

meidaatit
meidaatit

More news coverage on this pervasive erosion of our young people called drug addiction is needed. People die in rehab, jail, prison, and on our streets from drug addiction. We have yet as a society recognized drug addcition as something that needs to be treated . Instead we lock away thousands of young addcits (19 and 20 years odl)  for drug related crimes to a jail or prsion cell where many die. These facilities do not have 24-7 medical supervision either. The news' purpose should NOT be to prove scientology or the non religious facility Narconnon wrong. Their purpose should be to expose how many deaths from drug addcition happen across our country everyday on the streets, in all rehabs, and in jails and prisons. At least Narconnon is offering a non drug approach where the prescription drug approach has failed to save addcits. Narconnon has had sucesses. All rehabs and prisons and jails have lost the lives of young addicts. Instead of locking up the small drug addcits on the food chain our police should be looking for the drug lords before more young lives are lost to drug addiction.   Drugs kill.

meidaatit
meidaatit

By focusing on what is wrong with scientology we are missing the bigger point which is what is wrong with how addicts are being treated by the judicial system. Narconnon, which is not a religious organization, tries to help addicts  to a drug free life. More addicts die in prison and jail and do not receive medical treatment or rehab there until the very end of their term. State punishment to a cell is given to  the addcit than rehab at the very end of many years in the cell  is given. The drug addcit is labeled and unable to get employment. . Have you read how many years an addict has to spend in prison before they get help????  Narconnon has helped many addcits to a better life. I invite the news to write about the numerous number of addict deaths that take place in the drunk tanks in America's jails and prisons. Jails and prisons do not have 24-7 medical nor do they have help for addicts  until six months before their release date. Many addicts sit years and years in prsion before getting help. Some of these addicts are only 19 and 20   years old.

Scientology is a choice. Narconnon does not push religion. It tries to give rehab to addcits rather than punishment and provide work. Many have been helped by Narconnon. What does jail and prison do to help the growing numbers of drug and alcohol addicts in our society? Are jails and prisons held accountable for their treatment of addicts and the many deaths that occur in prisons and jails because the addicts across our country are put in the drunk tank without medical supervision????  This is not just a Narconnon problem this is a problem everywhere. Addicts need rehab not punishment for the rest of their life.

If someone wants to be a scientologist that is their choice. We are suppose to have religious freedom. However I think the news needs to stop making religious and racial issues and focus on how we can make humanity better. Addicts everywhere should receive rehab and not be punished to a cell for years before being helped and allowed back into society. Not all addicts are violent people...at least Narconnon wants to help the addcits which is more than I can say for some places

This is a common tragedy, and my heart goes out to the family.  Heroin is such a lethal drug that creates complete strangers out of loved ones, destroys not only the addict, but their families as well.  Each addict will acquire the exact same characterics ~ Stealing, Lieing, Uncontrollable Violence, Masters of Manipulation, No remorse for the hurt they've done to others, and basically Sociopathic in their nature.  Nothing, I mean Nothing will STOP them from getting the heroin.  They know all the tricks and can fool everyone.  Mr. Murphy seems to be naive when he said that his daughter did not steal....where has he been hiding?  Unless he was enabling her somehow, and doesn't realize it.  Does Mr. Murphy know The Heroin Does Not come to them, they will go to the Heroin.     I know this is a very emotional subject, but he should not  put the blame on Narconon.  They did not supply the Heroin to Stacy Murphy.  She chose to leave the complex for whatever reason and return with drugs in her system.  Maybe her father should have taken her to the emergency room in her town instead of sending her back to Narconon, knowing she was on dope again.   Something is missing from this story, a lot of unanswered questions, that only Stacy knows for sure.  The parents obviously have gone through the trauma that every single family with child who is a Heroin addict....they lying, stealing, mood rages, loss of trust.  It is human nature for some people to point the finger and blame others.  But from my own experience of living with a Heroin addict, there are many signs that something is seriously wrong, and you cannot undo the damage.  I'm sure Mr. Murphy feels awful that whatever he had done to try to help did not  work with Stacy.  No one wants to go through losing a child, especially to Heroin.   Perhaps, Mr. Murphy should organize an investigation in his town to find Stacy's Heroin dealer and have them locked up behind bars.  Ask her friends, co-workers....someone knows, and if they care, they will speak up and you will find the supplier of the dope.

I have been gone and haven't read all the comments, so someone may have already noticed but...

This poor girl looks like she could be Leah Remini's daughter. Strange coincidence.

How sad the lives lost because of this stuff.

It just has to end.

David Miscavige,...her name is Stacy Dawn Murphy and YOU sanctioned her death.

You miniscule little jerk.

And Exterior, shut the fuck up you troll.

That is tragic!  I don't understand why so many of you are getting in such a fluff and trying to make out that Narconon or Scientology kills people.  Go search rehabs around the world and you will see that people die there.  If a recovering addict takes the same dose they were used to before that could be it.  They have been using that much for sometimes years, how are they to know to reduce it, they are not pharmacists.  I don't understand why you guys below don't fight things that are real problems.  As far as I know Narconon has helped 10's of 1000's around the world.  Yes, a death is tragic but you people are like vultures jumping on peoples misfortune.  It is actually disgusting.

‎"Scientology is quite likely the most ruthless, the most classically terroristic, the most litigious and the most lucrative cult the country has ever seen. No cult extracts more money from its members." - - It is not a matter of “if” another person will die, it is a matter of “when.” Narconon is a dangerous rehab center, with unqualified staff, and the health risks and dangers to the patients must not be tolerated any further.

It all begins in Afghanistan, which is their main profit source, unfortunately.  By the time it gets to the US, the 'pure' heroin has been cut hundreds of times with chalk, sleeping pills, rat poison, brick dust, flour, ephedrine, or whatever the evil dealers want to cut it with.  Very unfortunate how much power Afganistan has from their profitable poppy plant.

@meidaatit Narconon indoctrinates its 'students' (hey meidaatit, why are they students and not 'patients') in scientology teachings. TRs are a part of Narconon, not dealing with addiction. Brain washing is very choice limiting.

I swear it looks like you took a OSA post from the NBC thread and copied and pasted it here. So you have decided when someone like this dies, we can just chalk it up to (oh well that is just the way it is) and let’s move on. Never mind the facts, just blame the victim because they were a user. That is why Narconon is the perfect scam, because you can always divert reasonability and create doubt. Who will question just one more dead addict? I am so glad to know we got you looking in to her cause of death. And all the others? Want to blame them too? What about all the people that leave their in the back of an ambulance due to strokes, heat attacks, and other injuries, all their fault? I guess it is a addicts fault when Narconon tells them they should disconnect from their families too? That is just the nature of the drug L I love how you reduce the sea of crimes committed by Narconon down to one person and blaming them, WOW. Who said her drug dealer was not Narconon Staff? It is common knowledge that they sell drugs for sex, money Etc, as far as anyone knows they hooked her up.

This looks like a OSA copy and pate job from another thread on NBC.

As far as her dealer, it is known that staff trade drugs for sex and such so why should anyone belive that she did not het it from them?

Drugs kill. Young addcits die in all rehabs, jails, and prisons everyday. Stacy was given an alternative and she left the facility. If she had not been a Narconnon she could have been in prison or jail where many young addcits die or waste away.

" fight drug addiction"  "fight drug lords" ; but don't fight an organization that has helped thousands get over addcitions and fights against drugs...Young drug addcits have died in all rehabs and in prison and jail...Do those deaths get press. Why not? The news is more interested in attacking scientology than arresting drug lords or helping addicts.

@Exterior I agree....there are more facts that the family is not divulging.  They are making accusations that are so ridiculous. Sure, Stacy would be alive right now if she never did the dope in the 1st place.  Interesting how they are blaming others for Stacy's death....that family knows more about her lifestyle than they are going to admit.  They are hiding pertinent information that could lead to the dealer that sold or gave it to her.  Heroin is going to either be a 'quick' death, or a 'slow' death.

@Exterior I personally know this young lady's parents and you are very wrong about the place not being responsoble for her death. She was supposed to be under constant suvailance and for more than 2 hours no one was watching her. Furthermore, Narconon aknowledged that they were aware she had taken something and they did nothing to try and counter act the drugs that were taken. Could her death been avoided if she had not taken drugs after going through detox? Absolutely, but an addict does not think that way. If Narconon had done a proper search the drugs would have been found, but sadly they did not. If Narconon is so great then why is there currently an investigation going on about their practices? By the way just a couple of months before Stacy's death a young man died the same way in the same facilaty. I am not a vulture as you called others above, but just having come from Stacy's funeral and seeing the affect this has had on her family and friends I think this place needs to be shut down.

where did Stacy get the drugs? Where did Stacy  get the money to buy the drugs? When Stacy left the facility where did she go? If Stacy was not court ordered to be at Narconnon than they had to let her go. Nnarconnon does not like drugs of any kind. There is no guaranteed even with a proper search that the drugs would have been found if Stacy hid them.  Stacy brought or bought the drugs to the facility.  Even drugs are brought into prison  and jail.  Every death at any facility should be investigated that inludes the deaths of addicts who die in prsion and jail...yet that does not make the facility guilty. It just means they are under investigation. The courts will decide who is guilty..this is not the media's job.

@tetloj Because there are other facilities Mr. an Mrs. Murphy could have sent their daughter that 'does' supply drugs to ease the dope sick, and some do not.  Since no research was done on their part  the first time their daughter went to Narconon, they had time to do their homework after she returned home for more drugs and again went to Narconon.  The Murphy's could have sent her to a nearby hospital under ER medical/psychological supervision.
