Scientology Leader David Miscavige's Disappeared Wife Shelly: What We Know

Categories: Scientology

Miscavige likes to dress up for Scientology events -- but his wife Shelly hasn't been seen at one in five years.
One of Scientology's many intriguing mysteries is the disappearance of church leader David Miscavige's wife, Michelle "Shelly" Barnett, who hasn't been seen in public since around 2007.

We've written about Shelly Miscavige in the past, about her strange disappearance, and about the equally mysterious death of her mother, Flo Barnett.

And now that the news media is crazy for any information about Scientology, it's only natural that it would become interested in Shelly. The Business Insider brought up the story on Tuesday, summarizing what Lawrence Wright had said about Shelly in his amazing 2011 profile of Paul Haggis for the New Yorker.

But then there was a piece yesterday by the Daily Mail, which was so filled with errors it was hard to believe. Why does it matter? Well, the Daily Mail has become the most-read news website on the planet, and so a story like that is probably going to metastasize into a hundred little gossip sites, and the mistakes in that piece will soon be repeated all over the place.

As a service, then, we'd like to correct the record that's been so mangled by the Daily Mail, and lay out what we know and don't know about Miscavige's missing wife.

Several websites are pointing out the irony that it was Shelly Miscavige who helped bring together Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes. During his marriage to Nicole Kidman, Cruise had been almost entirely out of the church (something that was well covered-up at the time), but the church had maintained tabs on him by spying on the Cruise household with its employees. After Cruise and Kidman broke up, the church was taking no chances -- Marty Rathbun, Scientology's second-highest ranking official and a highly respected auditor, was tasked with bringing Tom back into church involvement, and Shelly Miscavige was assigned the role of finding him a new wife who wouldn't try to pull him away from Scientology. Both seemed to do their jobs well. By 2006, Cruise was a gung-ho member of the church and had married Katie Holmes who, at least nominally, agreed to become a church member herself.

By 2006, however, Rathbun was already gone, having defected in 2004 when David Miscavige assigned him to "The Hole" -- a crude office-prison at Scientology's international base east of Los Angeles -- where executives who had fallen out of favor were held against their will, sometimes for years at a stretch. After just a few days in the Hole, Rathbun managed to get out and then absconded from the base. He never went back. (Rathbun did not, as the Daily Mail suggested, testify in court to conditions in the Hole. Debbie Cook, another former executive, testified in a Texas court in February that she had been held in the Hole and described it in shocking detail, which is what the Daily Mail might be thinking of.)

As for Shelly, some time around 2007, she suddenly vanished from Int Base.

In both the Business Insider and Daily Mail, there's a suggestion that Shelly also found her way to the Hole. But none of the ex-Scientologists I have talked to -- including John Brousseau, who was at the base until 2010 -- says they ever saw Shelly put there. (If she had been in The Hole, plenty of people at Int Base would have known it.)

The Daily Mail says that if Shelly isn't in The Hole...

Some believe Shelly...went into hiding after becoming disillusioned with the religion. Others say she died after a battle with cancer.

But none of my sources have ever suggested that Shelly ditched Scientology. And none of them have ever suggested that she has died of cancer.

The Daily Mail may again be confused by another story, one that we had previously reported. On June 14, 2011, Ann Tidman died of cancer in a Hollywood apartment complex. To Scientologists, she was a famous figure, usually referred to as Annie Broeker, formerly wife of Pat Broeker. The Broekers took care of L. Ron Hubbard at the end of his life, and were his likely successors when he died in 1986. But Pat Broeker was edged out for the church's leadership by a young David Miscavige, and Ann spent the rest of her life at Int Base -- until she was moved to the Hollywood complex for her final days. She kept her illness a secret even from her own sisters, and they did not learn about her death until this past January.

Ann Tidman is not Shelly Miscavige.

So where is Shelly?

The best information we have comes from John Brousseau, who escaped from Int Base in 2010.

Before he left, he says that it was common knowledge at Int Base, which is near Hemet, California, east of Los Angeles, that Shelly was being held at another base about 60 miles away -- the headquarters of the Church of Spiritual Technology (CST), a complex in the mountains above LA.

RimforestMap1a.JPG
[Click to enlarge: In this map we've highlighted the location of three key Scientology facilities. In Los Angeles, we've marked the location of Big Blue, the administrative headquarters the church more formally called PAC Base, for Pacific Area Command (it's a large former hospital, the Cedars of Lebanon, painted blue). About 90 miles east, near the town of Hemet, is the sprawling international management headquarters of Scientology (known as "Int Base" and "Gold"), where "The Hole" was located, at least until 2010. And near Lake Arrowhead in the San Bernardino mountains is the headquarters of the Church of Spiritual Technology, referred to as "Twin Peaks" or "Rimforest" or "Mountain High," depending on which Scientologist you're talking to. For more detailed maps, see our story on CST.]

Yesterday I asked Brousseau for more detail: how did it become common knowledge at Int Base that Shelly was at the CST headquarters?

"I was able to observe the mail that came to the base. It was sorted into a huge set of pigeonholes," he told me.

"Any mail that came for Shelly, I noticed the officer for the RTC [Religious Technology Center] would stick it in the box that was picked up every day and taken to the CST headquarters," he says.

"It was kind of obvious to me that's where Shelly was. And it was something everybody knew," he adds. "It seemed a pretty logical place for Miscavige to put her."

OK, I know this alphabet soup can get tricky, but try to keep up so we avoid more problems like the Daily Mail piece...

-- David Miscavige, Scientology's ultimate leader, has a formal title. He's the chairman of the board of the Religious Technology Center, and Scientologists customarily refer to him as "COB," or "COB of RTC." (You know you're talking to an ex-Scientologist if they're referring to "DM" or "Miscavige" -- church members consider that too familiar.)

-- The RTC controls the trademarks and copyrights of Scientology, and is the controlling entity of the whole enterprise. On paper, the Church of Scientology International (CSI), and Author Services Inc (ASI, which acts as Hubbard's literary agency), and so many other entities appear to be independent organizations with their own governing bodies. But that's a sham for the IRS. Miscavige is in total control of every one of them.

-- Of all the many church entities, the Church of Spiritual Technology may be the strangest of all. As we explained in a lengthy piece about CST, it's the most secretive organization in a secretive church. And it has a very strange mandate: to build bases in various locations, and furnish them with underground vaults for storing the total life work of L. Ron Hubbard -- the millions of words he wrote or spoke in lectures -- etched on steel plates and stored in titanium containers so that his wisdom can survive a nuclear holocaust.

RimForestOverview2.JPG
[Click to enlarge: An overview of the CST headquarters near Lake Arrowhead, showing the locations of the vault intended to protect Hubbard's works from nuclear annihilation, and the "LRH House" intended to provide a place to live when the reincarnated Hubbard returns after "leaving his body" in 1986. Our full CST story.]

CST has vaults in California, New Mexico, and a new one has been under construction in Wyoming. And CST itself has a headquarters, a complex near Lake Arrowhead above Los Angeles. It's there, Brousseau and other ex-Scientologists tell us, that Shelly Miscavige -- at least at one time -- was being kept out of view.

"I don't know where she might be now," Brousseau says. "There are a lot of different properties where she could be."

TrementinaLogo.JPG
[Near the New Mexico CST property, which includes a vault, an LRH House, and an airstrip, is this symbol carved into the desert floor. We were told this mark, CST's logo, is intended to guide L. Ron Hubbard's spirit as it returns to Earth. Our full CST story.]

Another thing to keep in mind: among the other disappeared church executives is Heber Jentzsch, who is still considered the president of the Church of Scientology, International, but has not been seen publicly since about 2004. In 2010, however, when his ex-wife, Karen de la Carriere, started making a stink about Heber missing, the church briefly produced him long enough to spend some time with their son, Karen tells me. Then Heber disappeared again.

Could the church suddenly produce Shelly in order to tamp down all the media attention? I guess we're going to find out.

UPDATE: Scientology attorney Gary Soter puts out another masterful public statement, this time about Shelly Miscavige. Check it out...

In a statement to the Daily News, Scientology lawyer Gary Soter said Miscavige's ex "is not missing. The claim is utterly ridiculous and unfounded."

Note the word missing. No, it's pretty plain that the church knows exactly where she is.

A reader pointed out to me that the Daily News, in that quote, referred to Shelly as Miscavige's "ex." I think that's a mistake. If you look at the full Soter statement published in Us magazine, he refers to her as "Mrs. Miscavige."

New readers might want to check out our primer, "What is Scientology?" Another good overview is our series from last summer, "Top 25 People Crippling Scientology." At the top of every story, you'll see the "Scientology" category which, if you click on it, will bring up all of our most recent stories.

As for hot subjects we've covered here, you may have heard about Debbie Cook, the former church official who rebelled and was sued by Scientology. You might have also heard about the Super Power Building, Scientology's "Mecca," whose secrets were revealed here. We also reported how Scientology spied on its own most precious object, Tom Cruise. (We wrote Tom an open letter that he has yet to respond to.) Have you seen a Scientology ad on TV lately? We debunked some of the claims in that 2-minute commercial you might have seen while watching Glee or American Idol.

Other stories have looked at Scientology's policy of "disconnection" that is tearing families apart. You may also have heard something about the Sea Org experiences of the Paris sisters, Valeska and Melissa, and their friend Ramana Dienes-Browning. We've also featured Paulette Cooper, who wrote about Scientology back in the day, and Janet Reitman, Hugh Urban, and the team at the Tampa Bay Times, who write about it today. And there's plenty more coming.

D A V I D M I S C A V I G E and T O M C R U I S E are both law breaking cult leaders. They both have billions of dollars behind them and can buy immunity from the law by donating to law enforcement and politicians. They are robbing from the American people by hiding a cult under tax exempt church status. They are controlling many people through interrogations which is a form of mind control. Bravo to Leah for having the courage to step forward and expose this dangerous organization. I was born into Scientology and broke free at age 21 so I speak from experience. I had to endure horrible acts from this sick cult. I ran to Police for help and was told there was no wrong doing and they could not help. Try typing in the cult leaders name on this message board without spaces and your message will not appear, this is proof of how powerful they are. Money = power.

David Miscavige is the devil incarnate.  His wife has not been seen in years and he acts as if all is well in his world.  Where is the love?  Scientology is a cult......where is God in this religion?  Where is the love, openness, forgiveness and acceptance?

What we DO know is that David Miscavige will NOT file for divorce because then he would be forced to disclose his FINANCIALS.  He will NEVER DISCLOSE his financials!  WHY?  You figure it out!

I heard that he is covertly using microwave technology on those he deems enemies. That he does this by use of euipment he can use from a vehicle outside of someone's home, thus covertly murdering them by causing them cancer. If this is true he needs to be stopped.

How many Scientologists died of cancer that were on his enemy list?

FACTS
FACTS

David Miscavige demoted, removed and sent several of the Sea Org memebrs to RPF and "The hole" (his prison), who were directly involved in Nazanin Boniadi's "special project" (prospect future wife for Tom cruise).  Greg Wilhere was sent  back to "the hole" right after he handed Boniadi over to Tom Cruise in NY in early Nov 2004, Shelly Miscavige was put in to a remote location, Shane Woodruf (president of Celebrity Center Int-LA, in 2004 and part of 2005) he was then demoted to a lower post but still kept at Celebrity Center,  Tommy Davis was ordered to divorce his wife Nadene (both were SO members and David Miscavige had them work with Tom C and spy to DM),  Jessica Feschback -Rodriguez (SO member who audited Tom, his girlfriends/wives, his kids and family) who was then ordered by Miscavige to divorce from Rodriguez and then ordered to marry Tommy Davis (they both worked in Tom's circle as spies for DM.

Tommy Davis's ex-wife (Nadene) was demoted and became one of the maids at CCI-LA and then left the SO (I am told).

David Miscavige also ordered Andrea Morse Doven (Michael Doven's wife) who worked as Tom's personal assistant for over 15 years and then was personal assistant to Nazanin Boniadi while she was living at Tom's house as his girlfriend, to go to Flag (Scientology base in Florida).  Andrea was harshly punished and sec-checked for months before she agreed to tow the line and returned to LA but she upon her return she was told that she will no longer be working for Tom Cruise, instead David Miscavige in order to keep her silenced (she has a lot of first hand data regarding Boniadi and Tom's relationship), Andrea was sent to work at Michael Wisner and his wife's company (both public scientologists and DM's spies).

Pomm Hepner, Tom's personal piolet's (Randy Hepner) wife and nanny to Bella and Connor, was also sent to Flag for a "reality adjustment" and then removed from Tom's circle.

Andrea Morse Doven and Pomm Hepner were threatened that if they don't follow David Miscavige's orders/pubishments, they will be disconnected from their husbands.  Therefore they both did what they were told in order to stay married and save their family although they both hate David Miscavige and disagreed with all the accusation/lies that they were punished for.

I am sure that we will one day hear their stories and truth.

Also, I'm new to all this scion watching stuff (you go Tony Ortega!) so excuse me if I've missed this, but it seems there's a lot of stories about the Int Base in Hemet, but none about the one in Twin Peaks.

Does no one escape from there?

My little story of the Sci base in Twin Peaks;

In the late 80's, early 90's, I lived near Crestline and took the road past the Sci place on my way to work at my daughters school, further in Twin Peaks. One day the 'copy repair guy' came and checked into our office as he usually did. We said 'hi' and to go on back to the teachers lounge where the copy machine was.

He hesitated a moment and said, 'You guys are really different from the place down the road."

Me and school secretary, "What??"

He stated that when he was called to the sci/fy place that he had to wait...usually quite awhile... (and that it felt like he was trying to enter Area 51), for at least 2 people to ESCORT him to where the copy machine was and that they 'babysat' him the whole time. He added that it was 'creepy' --- they didn't talk and acted as if he was an enemy there to steal their secrets. When he was done, he was ESCORTED out. No thanks...nothing. Just kind of..."get out of here now". Weird.

Made me very curious about the little road leading into their property. Wanted to drive down..."oops, I'm lost...sorry." My husband basically asked me not to dare to do that. I'm not that brave of a person, so never did. Darn.

It is really not a reach that Shelly is up at Rimforest. There is not direct contact between CST and the rest of CSI. that is on purpose. In fact most of teh INT base (except for RTC) really does not know much about the base. It wold not be called CST around INT it would be called LRH Archives. When I was there we were not allowed to mention CST when we went to the INT base. We were not allowed to speak of it's location or give any indication at to it's location. There were staff that had been up at CST for years and people they knew in the Sea Org had no idea where they ended up. This is planned and why RTC and COB make little of this. one thing that would be interesting to find out is when Russ Bellin was busted as CO CST and exactly when we first knew of Shelly missing from the INT base. IF Shelly was having doubts CSt would be one of the last places that she would be sent IMHO. The reason why I say this is when ever there was a major ethics cycle for CST staff they were sent to RTC for handling. Sometimes returning but mostly staying at the INT base and being placed in the GOLD org. I have been saying for years that Shelly is at CST. It would be the best place to get her out of the fold and let her destimulate and get back to the brainwashed state that DM enjoys so much. My 2 cents. Dylan

More like "1990" with Ted Koppel - that's 22 years ago.  This "hotshot, know-it-all" made all of us in OSA watch it over and over, in order for us to "learn how you do it".  That's why Tommy Davis comes off like a bully - that's the coaching from his master.  David Miscavige could send his own wife to a workcamp because he is the heartless, ruthless, scheming punk that pounced on Hubbard's wife and bullied her into relinquishing her position in order for him to be able to seize complete control.  Then he kept her away from her husband the rest of Hubbard's life, which conveniently ended just before the tax authorities were to make their raid, and just ONE DAY - the very next day - after a "last will and testament" was changed, which finally gave little David the keys to the Scientology kingdom. Oh, for a competent murder investigation.

Hi....I'm not really one to comment about this stuff....I just read alot. But this missing SHELLY thing is really strange. When someone goes missing for as long as she has...when do people stand up?....no matter who they are...who they are affiliated with...AND demand that she be produced for all to see. What if she needs the voice of people on the outside to help her. Shouldn't that voice be unrelenting? With all that seems to go on inside Scientology, I would think people would be screaming from rooftops until her wellbeing has been established and her absence has been confirmed by her, to be her own free will!  And that conformation should not come from ANYONES mouth except Shelly''s....and yes, I'm speaking to you Mr. Soter,

Why doesn't the FBI help find Shelly Barnett, wife of David Miscavige?  Especially after people like Debbie Cook and other ex-communicated COS members have shared their personal stories of being held against their will in reconditioning camps.  Shelly could expose David the Dicatator and Scientology for fraudlant, illegal activities.  This may be the only thing that can save Tom Cruise from a crazy, brainwashing cult.

People who join Scientology are weak people.  They are used for their money and they are weak.  A strong person would never be involved with a "hitler" type cult.  I do not understand why it is allowed in the US.  But if a person is so weak they need someone to direct their life the I guess that is where they belong.  They are the sheep and Scientology is the wolf.

Mrs. Cruise? Octecdkc you don't even recognize how brainwashed and oppressive you look. well i dont know anything about DM other than what i have read here on Tony's blog and what i have seen on youtube and other internet news sites but anyone can be groomed to give interviews to the press and DM's silence it really creating an unstable foundation for his organization in its entirety and only creating speculation by non scientologists across the globe.  furthermore, where is the scientology cruise ship at this moment? or any of the other ships and sea vessels owned by scientology. where do these ships dock? do they pay harbor docking fees and at what harbor?  if the attorney is giving statements for david Miscavige to the press does that mean he is not in the United States?

I highly suspect that Miscavige, like many denizens of Hollywood, is incapable of putting two words together intelligently unless he's reading them off a TelePrompTer or a script.  He's uneducated and socially an outsider.  An off-the-cuff interview with a sharp interviewer would be way too risky for someone so inexperienced at dealing with media or any kind of confrontation. Even superslick Tommy Davis looks like a fool a couple of times on that Australian documentary "The Ex-Files" when he's put on the spot or is obviously lying and/or covering up.  He stammers, his eyes shift, his whole faces "vibrates" and he repeats the same phrase over and over.  Classic signs of someone who is being deceptive.

Vanessajasper

the last known interview with David Miscavige was in 2009 with Ted Kopel of Nightline. Why is David Miscaviga relaying messages through a mouth-piece attorney?if he has nothing to hide why doesnt he simply make an effort to present his side of the story? it may be assumed  that David Miscavige is hiding and avoiding the numerous accusations of his organization, but why? David Miscavige is a well spoken person and the COB of scientology, he is scientology's religious leader, operating like a central powered Pope of scientology. Even John Paul II met face to face with the man who attempted to assassinate him when his assailant was in prison(he still is in prison) in hopes of converting him to Christianity and to forgive him.  David Miscavige is missing a great and important opportunity by not granting any interviews to the press and he alone is creating dissension with in the ranks of scientologists across the globe as we see with the recent deflection of the Org in Haifa, Israel. this story has gone globally viral and will only grow larger. the only hope of salvaging the image of scientology for David Miscavige would be to grant interviews in hopes of setting matters straight. I want to hear what david Miscavige has to say about the current situation of scientology, doesn't everyone? if David Miscavige continues to hide and evade the press and communicate through an attorney then we are all left to assume he has already determined to be guilty of all the accusations which are being launched toward him. If David Miscavige is innocent why doesnt he grant an interview and confront the escalating allegations of his personal conduct and the manner scientology conducts its relationships with members?
