Augusta National Finally Allows Female Members: Historic Or Humiliating?

The Augusta National Golf Club joined the 19th century yesterday when it announced that it's finally admitted two female members to the previously all-male club, which has many applauding the club's decision to finally end its ban on penis-ly challenged members.

Former Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice and South Carolina financier Darla Moore will become the first female members to break through the old-boy barrier. Just so we're clear, it's currently 2012.

"This is a joyous occasion," Augusta National chairman Billy Payne says in a statement released yesterday. "We are fortunate to consider many qualified candidates for membership at Augusta National.... It will be a proud moment when we present Condoleezza and Darla their green jackets when the club opens this fall. This is a significant and positive time in our club's history and, on behalf of our membership, I wanted to take this opportunity to welcome them and all of our new members into the Augusta National family."

While Payne may find the club's decision to end its "male only" policy "joyous" and "proud," we find it to be more insulting and humiliating.

Again, it's 2012. Women have been allowed to vote in this country for nearly 100 years, and have all the same rights as men under the constitution -- this isn't Saudi Arabia. It seriously took some hillbilly golf club more than 80 years to get with the program?

If we were Rice and Moore, we'd take our green jackets, pop a squat directly over them, and tell the boys at Augusta "thanks, but no thanks."

That's our opinion, of course -- but we want to know what you think: is the club's allowing women members historic or humiliating?

You used to need only one token to get a ride on the back of the bus.

They are probably experiencing economic problems in this bad economy, and hope this move will attract more members($).

@plumeria I agree that there must be something else driving this. Call me a cynic, but, out of the clear blue sky in 2012, Augusta National's reasons cannot be all that egalitarian. I'm all about equal rights, but really, some things can be gender-separated as long as I live.
