Congressman Todd Akin Concedes "Rape Can Lead To Pregnancy." But The Guy's Still A Liar

Nine times out of 10 it will probably be Congressman Todd Akin.
Senate hopeful Todd Akin continues to run damage control today as members of his own party are asking him to bow out of the Missouri Senate race after he attempted to re-write the laws of biology with his claim that rape victims have the miraculous ability to end their own pregnancies if the baby's father is the man who raped them.

Today, Akin issued his official "apology" (in the form of a 30-second campaign ad, which you can see below) and like your run-of-the-mill political mea culpa, Akin's apology is bullshit, and does nothing to address the fact that he blatantly lied -- which, if you ask us, is even more of a red flag when considering a potential United States senator than a few derp-y comments he made about abortion.

If you'll recall, Akin claimed he got his information about women being able to end their own pregnancies from medical professionals.

Here's his direct quote:

"From what I understand from doctors...if it's a legitimate rape the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down. But let's assume that maybe that didn't work, or something..."

We called Akin's campaign office and his congressional communications director, and sent his campaign an e-mail asking for the name and contact information for the supposed doctor who fed the congressman this inaccurate information about women's bodies having the magical power to end a pregnancy. The line at his campaign office has been taken off the hook, Akin's communications director Steve Taylor's voicemail isn't accepting messages, and we haven't received a reply to the e-mail we sent his office.

So we'll go out on a limb here and assume that there isn't a single doctor in America who would agree that women can simply wish their pregnancies away. We'll go further and assume that if there is one, he or she is a witch doctor, and probably didn't speak to Congressman Akin.

In other words, he blatantly lied to voters -- and he's done nothing to acknowledge the fact that his pants currently are on fire.

Here's the transcript of his new apology ad:

"Rape is an evil act, I used the wrong words in the wrong way. And for that I apologize. As the father of two daughters, I want tough justice for predators. I have a compassionate heart for the victims of sexual assault. And I pray for them. fact is, rape can lead to pregnancy. Truth is, rape has many victims. The mistake I made was in the words I said, not in the heart I hold. I ask for your forgiveness."

Allow us to translate:

"Rape is an evil act, and I am a bold-faced liar. Despite my idiotic claims, at no point did any medical professional tell me women have the ability to wish away their pregnancies. It was simply campaign rhetoric I used to kowtow to Missouri's anti-abortion crowd in my now-hopeless attempt to become a United States senator. The mistake I made was not in the words I said, but in the fact that I completely made something up, which in turn made me look like a complete jackass. I ask for your vote."
