Obama "Scandal" Is At Columbia (Claims "Gut Instinct" Of Right-Wing Vegas Oddsmaker)

Wayne Allyn Root: Vegas oddsmaker/total fucking nutjob.

Of all the far-right-wing bullshit "journalism" that litters the Interwebs, we've tracked down one of the bull-shitiest -- a Vegas oddsmaker who claims that the most scandalous conspiracy regarding President Barack Obama can be found at Columbia University.

Admittedly, he doesn't know exactly what this scandal entails, and his theory is based on nothing more than his "gut instinct," but the scandal exists -- again, according to nothing more than his (ahem) flawless intuition.

The piece was written by Wayne Allyn Root, a self-described Vegas "prognosticator" who graduated from Columbia with Obama in 1983. He's also a syndicated far-right-wing radio host who ran as the vice-presidential candidate on the Libertarian ticket in 2008.

Root's piece is in response to Nevada Senator Harry Reid's baseless claim that Mitt Romney hasn't paid taxes in over a decade. Root argues that Romney should call Reid's bluff and request that Obama release his college transcripts because he has a "big skeleton in his closet."

Again, this is based on nothing more than Root's "gut instinct," which he claims is how he's "made my living for 29 years."

From Root's rant:

The first question I'd ask is, if you had great grades, why would you seal your records? So let's assume Obama got poor grades. Why not release the records? He's president of the free world, for gosh sakes. He's commander-in-chief of the U.S. military. Who'd care about some poor grades from three decades ago, right? So then what's the problem? Doesn't that make the media suspicious? Something doesn't add up.

Secondly, if he had poor grades at Occidental, how did he get admitted to an Ivy League university in the first place? And if his grades at Columbia were awful, how'd he ever get into Harvard Law School? So again those grades must have been great, right? So why spend millions to keep them sealed?

Third, how did Obama pay for all these fancy schools without coming from a wealthy background? If he had student loans or scholarships, would he not have to maintain good grades?

Here's my gut belief: Obama got a leg up by being admitted to both Occidental and Columbia as a foreign exchange student. He was raised as a young boy in Indonesia. But did his mother ever change him back to a U.S. citizen? When he returned to live with his grandparents in Hawaii or as he neared college-age preparing to apply to schools, did he ever change his citizenship back? I'm betting not.

Root claims that he believes (again, based on nothing) that if Obama were to release his transcripts from Columbia, the following would be revealed:

A) He rarely ever attended class.

B) His grades were not those typical of what we understand it takes to get into Harvard Law School.

C) He attended Columbia as a foreign exchange student.

D) He paid little for either undergraduate college or Harvard Law School because of foreign aid and scholarships given to a poor foreign students like this kid Barry Soetoro from Indonesia.

And what respectable news outlet would allow the baseless, nonsensical ramblings of a Vegas oddsmaker to see the light of day? The Blaze, of course, which is owned by none other than former Fox News crybaby/bible-beating conspiracy theorist Glenn Beck -- and is about as credible a news source as The Onion.

Let's see, now. Romney hasn't paid taxes for ten years but, through some form of powerful magic, he's managed to keep the IRS off his ass. Anyone with that kind of mojo deserves to be president. He could fix the economy just by waving his wand. Obama has paid millions of dollars in legal fees to keep his college records sealed, but he has nothing to hide. His records are the biggest secret since the Manhattan Project because they contain nothing of interest.

Lefties are the C-W-A-Z-I-E-S-T people!

Stop the hypocrisy. If the left wants transparency in a "candidate", what's wrong with transparency from the leader of the free world? Be mindful that President Obama's long-form birth certificate is also sealed. His "certificate of live birth" is released, but his "birth certificate" was sealed by the governor of Hawaii days before the 2008 election.

Where are records--Bush, Jr.,Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, Clinton, Reagan, Carter....now we be able to retroactively examine all college transcripts of past Presidents, oh, and challengers--let's see Romney's---and don't forget--what about that scandal--didn't FDR get tossed out of Columbia Law School--and how did Bush Jr. get in to Yale anyway?

Root is a strange dude.  I entered the University of GA while being a black female in 1971 and graduated with a BS in Education three years later, and I paid for my degree the same way millions of others did--I had student loans and financial assistance from my parents.  I paid for graduate school by teaching during the day, saving money, and attending classes at night.  Just because he and PBO graduated from Columbia in the same year doesn't mean they'd know each other.  In my first year at UGA, there were 30,000 students on campus.  I didn't even try getting to know them or everyone who was in my graduating class.  Furthermore, if Root had known Barack Obama at Columbia, I seriously doubt if he would have befriended him.

Let Romney release his school records and tax returns first.

It's kind of scary that one's legitimacy depends on the memories of people you may have known tangentially 25 years ago. I had a double major in undergrad 18 years ago, and I don't know if I can name more than one fellow student in either major, or even from grad school 15 years ago. I can remember the faces of a few people in classes, but my friends were not in those majors, and I was not exactly a social butterfly, so the total number of people who still remember me from that time would be pretty limited. I don't know if anyone could verify all the different aspects of my life at the time. I guess it's a good thing I'm not running for president, because as a black person, the word of the college administrators would not be deemed good enough to verify my time or degree.

@taritac Plus, all of the schools have lists, and yearbooks, that show who was there. Nobody else has any right to the transcripts but the student and were ever they are applying to go to school.

@taritac It's kind of scary that if you happen to be born outside the US, through no fault of your own, and therefore have no chance of being President. even if you become a US citizen later in life and are a full-fledged citizen.

@izzy That's not true. If you're born outside of the US to an American citizen you can run for office. This was defined by Congress in 2010 or 2011. It's a common misperception.

@clpaulus  @izzy  You most certainly can run for POTUS if you were born to an American citizen on foreign soil, as long as you meet the constitutional requirement of living in America for a minimum of 12 years.

maybe he's crazy - but what harm would come from Obama releasing the records? Then we could laugh if it was all just a hoax. Romney should release his too - let's get all the info out!

@texasgurl The harm comes from answering every right wing nut job that wants this president to Step n Fetch for them. Fuck them.

@dave78981  @texasgurl Plus, educational records have not been public since 1974. We know the 3 colleges that Obama went to. We know that he got a political science degree at Columbia. We know that he got a J.D. at Harvard. There is no reason to see his classes or his grades because it doesn't matter. Basically, it is just being nosy when you don't have the right to.

@dave78981 Same goes for having Obama-supporting journalists go through Romney's tax returns, ignorant of what they mean, and publishing negative stories about every deduction Romney's ever taken--even ordinary business expenses.

@dave78981 On "the agree to disagree" level, I will partially agree with one point.  You don't think I live in reality, and I don't think you live in reality.  I sometimes wonder if I'm on the right planet.

@txguy That's not really true, because this conversation about what the top earners should be paying has been going on for awhile now; this is simply another part of it.

Obama's disastrous economic record, eh? Yeah, Congress had nothing to do with that, right? Congress ran on practically nothing but talking about jobs and what did we get when those Tea Partyists got into office? Oh yeah, a culture war about contraception and Joe McCarthy redux. Please.

I'm not going argue every point with you. I could, but it's useless because I'm not convinced by you and you don't live in reality.

You really think that tax return is evidence of something? So he paid 3 mil in taxes. He made 21 MILLION DOLLARS! That's about 14.5%? Yeah, NOT ENOUGH. I pay about 28% taxes on what I earn, which is far less than Mittens, and my guess is, I work a helluva lot harder for it.

txguy

@dave78981 The only reason we're in a conversation about Romney's tax records is because Obama cannot run on his disastrous economic record.  Instead of focusing on the economy, Obama worked on Obamacare, raised the deficit by trillions and engaged in a "stimulus," which only served to increase the baseline federal budget.  All of this drags on the economy.

Moreover, Romney pays millions in taxes.  See, e.g., http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/politics/documents/romney-2010-tax-return.html.  I don't consider $3 million in 2010 "little or no taxes."

Also, Many people realize that paying less taxes doesn't mean others have to pay more or an increase in the deficit.  The deficit is caused by spending more than you have.

dave78981
dave78981

@txguy The difference is, we're not in the middle of a national conversation about academic records. We ARE in a national conversation about what those who are successful owe back to the country that allowed that success. Romney knows he's on the wrong side of popular opinion on this, hence the refusal to release his tax returns.

Believe it or not, most people aren't ignorant of what paying little to no taxes means: It means everyone else has to pay more. It means the rich are contributing to the deficit (and with 10 years or so of Bush tax cuts, they very much are a major cause of the deficit.) It means Grandma's Social Security goes down and Junior's college tuition goes up and a thousand bridges and roads go to shit all so that Romney et. al. can enjoy one more tax free romp on the Riviera.
