Nick Delpopolo "inadvertently" ate weed. Whatever you say, buddy...

He didn't inhale, but an Upstate Olympian who was booted from the Olympics after testing positive for weed apparently chowed down on some food that had been "baked with marijuana."

Nick Delpopolo, a 23-year-old judo fighter from New Jersey, was expelled by the International Olympic Committee today after traces of THC were found in his blood.

"Nick Delpopolo has failed an in-competition drug test (THC, marijuana) and as a result, he has been disqualified from the Olympic Games by the International Olympic Committee," United States Olympic Committee spokesman Patrick Sandusky says in a statement. "The United States Olympic Committee is absolutely committed to clean competition and stringent anti-doping penalties. Any positive test, for any banned substance, comes with the appropriate consequences and we absolutely support the disqualification. We look forward to witnessing the continued success of our athletes and commend their dedication to clean sport."

Delpopolo, who finished seventh in this year's games in the judo competition, claims he didn't smoke any weed -- he says he ate it...inadvertently.

Delpopolo issued the following statement after getting axed:

"My positive test was caused by my inadvertent consumption of food that I did not realize had been baked with marijuana, before I left for the Olympic Games. I apologize to U.S. Olympic Committee, to my teammates, and to my fans, and I am embarrassed by this mistake. I look forward to representing my country in the future, and will re-dedicate myself to being the best judo athlete that I can be."

Delpopolo, who is ranked 12th in the world in judo, will be stripped of his Olympic accreditation immediately, and the IOC says it will ask the International Judo Federation to alter standings in Delpopolo's event, and to "consider any further action within its own competence."
